So I saw 'Angels and Demons' and I didn't really understand the ending. Can someone explain to me what Patrick McKenna's motivation was to kill the pope, steal the anti-matter, and so on?

this is how I viewed it: (and I may be wrong so please correct me)

I think Patrick stole the anti-matter and kidnapped all the potential popes to create fear and blamed it on the Illuminati (sp?) The Illuminati would get blamed for all the popes' deaths (he didn't count on one maybe pope surviving) and he could be the hero who saves everyone from the bomb and he would then be elected pope. I think it was all about his desire for power.
He did kill the pope which got the chain of events to start.

I think his motivation was that he didn't want scientists discovering the secrets of how the universe was created (the big bang). Apparently in the book (which I did not read) he was a religious fanatic.

So he faked that the Illuminati coming out of hiding to kidnap the popes, yada yada.

I don't know if he desired to be pope (maybe the book would say) but I think he wanted to look like a hero and stop the scientists from creating/using anti-matter.

I think his main motivation was to stop scientists from doing anything that would threat people's faith in God. He did sound pretty passionate when he was talking to the Commander Richter about the scientists...he called them arrogant and he seemed very upset by the discovery of anti-matter.
I also guess he thought he deserved to be a pope 'cause what he was doing for the church.
