[Episode Discussion] 5x19 - "Immortal Kombat" May 17th 2020
 

- Love Alex’s new costume.

- Where did all these extra Leviathan people come from?

- Alex to Kara while Kelly is listening: Hey, no super-hearing!
Me: Soooo… does that mean Kelly KNOWS about Kara’s powers? Would have been nice for them to show us when she found out.

- I like Mission Impossible!Alex, but she’s enjoying being a vigilante a little too much (and Kelly is enjoying Alex’s suit a little too much :lol: )

- Kara telling Lena off was a great scene! Lena needed telling off. I cheered.

- Oh no – Kara’s Daft Punk helmet is back. I like the suit, but not the helmet.

- Nia let her emotions get in the way of the mission and purposely blocked Brainy out of her head, despite M’gann telling her to look deeper into her dreams – something Nia knows she should have been doing long ago - and now she realizes she was wrong about not trusting Brainy and may be too late to save him because of it.

- I LOVE Brainy defeating Leviathan all by himself, and saving his friends! YAY!

- And Lex totally didn’t expect Gemma to short-circuit like that, no matter what he told Brainy. He was genuinely shocked when it happened.

- Theory: Whatever Gemma turned into at the end ISN’T actually Gemma – it’s “The Anointed One” taking over her body.

And I still hope “The Anointed One” ends up being Brainy’s mom, Brainiac 4… but that’s probably just wishful thinking ;). We won’t find out until 2021 anyway.

I haven't watched yet but I'm already missing the show knowing we have to wait until at least Spring or even Summer of 2021. However, so great Melissa has this extra time for her pregnancy and to be a mother, which is great the network gave this her. :)

See, this is where a backstory, origin episode would have come in handy this season. We still don't know who the leader really is, and we may never find out.




I don't know if Alex and Kelly have had that conversation. I don't think it would surprise her since James was Guardian.



I am very proud of him for doing that.



So nice to see Mama Luther back now. I noticed Brenda's name in the credits and was wondering, when we were going to see her in the episode. Of course, it had to be the last shot.



If it weren't for this virus, we would get to see the other half of the finale next week.

I wish they'd had more time for Leviathan's backstory. I was still disappointed that Lex seems to have outsmarted Brainy again. When Brainy asked for the protective thing for Leviathan's ship & Lex refused, I wish Brainy had just throat-punched him or done what he did to J'onn that one time and used the right pressure points to knock him out, searched him for the device (maybe taking his watch along with it) & gone to the Leviathan ship.

In the comics, Brainy often did things where it appeared he was committing suicide, but he had a backup plan (usually involving his forcefield belt). He knew he was safe but pretended to be defeated.

Brainy is smart enough he could have come up with something to protect himself more. I also don't know why he didn't try to crawl toward the door to see if he could get out of the room & to safety. That made no sense. When Lex squatted down to take the bottle from him, I wish Brainy could have ripped the pin off of Lex and taken the bottle back. I hate how it was left with Lex walking off & Brainy in peril. We know he's not going to die, but the cliffhanger is so much more annoying since we have to wait so long for the resolution.

I liked that Lena finally apologized & came to her senses. I didn't like that Kara was staying angry (although I can understand why).

Alex's costume is cool, but I admit I don't like the eye makeup. It's distracting. I liked Kelly's reaction to it.

I'm really liking Mgan (is that her name?). She's pretty cool.

I'm glad Nia finally came to her senses & that she had a bit more screentime & some useful contributions.

I know Supergirl's speech to the people in VR was supposed to be inspiring and all, but I wish she had told everyone that there was a plan by evil aliens to kill everyone in VR as a means of getting them to leave.

I did like the parallels of how she convinced them to leave VR at the same time Lena was convincing Andrea to stand down.

It was cool seeing Brainy's female version again & I like that she held his hand. So it seems Lex couldn't see her (maybe only Brainy could?).

I wonder why Gemma didn't shrink the way the others did.

I needed this too.




I'm not a fan at all of Alex becoming a vigilante. The writers never seem to know what to do with her. I fear that her character will eventually go the way of James, and leave the show.




That alternative speech, I feel, would have definitely would have been more effective. It's not like the world doesn't know about evil aliens. It totally would have worked.




Because it looked cooler to see her disintegrate.

I wonder if some people would have decided to stay & die because they missed their loved ones too much. I think the speech she gave was in line with the way the show works. I'm too jaded to believe a speech like that would work on all those people though. I know it was meant to parallel what Lena was saying to Andrea as well. It didn't work for me, but then, I'm a curmudgeon.

I don't think that Gemma was destroyed. I think she will have survived somehow. But it's weird bc the code was to make them shrink. Doesn't make sense.

I realized something about the bottle though. They said only some sort of quantum thing (which was destroyed) &/or magic could open it. No more quantum thingy & the witches put themselves inside the other bottle (which begs the question of how it will be opened to release them now). Lex can't open the bottle without those things.

I'm listening to Supergirl Radio's podcast on the finale, and the ladies' made a valid point about saving everyone in the VR.

VR is powered by a computer, ALL computers have power cords. Kara didn't really need to make a hope speech. All she needed to do was look for the power cord, pull it out from the socket and boom! Leviathan's master evil plan is foiled!!

But we needed to hear Kara's hope speech and see it parallel with Lena's hope speech to Andrea.

I'm curious since we've had some time since the finale aired, what are everyone's overall thoughts on season 5? Loved this season? Liked it? Hated it? Apathetic towards the season?

One constant that has helped me stay sane and enjoy some of the ridiculous story choices has been listening to Supergirl Radio. I'm not in love with season 5. It's just, it was there. It happened. Would I rewatch? Probably not.

Well that was interesting...But someone spoilerd me and said that Supergirl would be sended to the Phantom Zone by Lex which didn`t happen here...
Oh and I loved the Harry Potter reference in that episode! And J’onn J’onzz as Supergirl is always fun :lol:
