From the comic books, which I'm still not sure whether they are canon, Kirk mentioned he has been captain for less then a year and the friendship between him and Spock is growing, though in baby steps.

I think the whole "alternate timeline" element of the last movie makes it clear that nothing is "canon."

I'm really hoping that they don't use that as creative licence to go hog wild messing with things that will put off established fans.

well, some good things do happen in fanfic. Maybe it would give them some ideas as to where they need to flesh out background stories.
