My mom was overly fond of saying "Want in one hand, spit in the other, and see which one fills up faster..."

Since the comment was usually made in response to the expression of desire for something unnecessary, it was pretty obvious pretty quickly that there was no acceptable response that didn't involve dropping the subject. She usually used the old "That's nice, dear" tone.

Hey, I say the "How does it feel..." line to my kids too. The want-vs-spit is a good one, too. Otherwise, kids don't learn there's more to life that what they "want."

I'm with Trude ... ewww ... although I guess it may have been an effective way to explain the concept to children.

But yes, it can be hard to learn and distinguish the difference between wants and needs.

That's a nice one Trude.

I want and need to see the Spock and Kirk friendship develop in the next movie.

That would be an important element to whatever story they do.
