They made a new Trek joke on The Big Bang Theory's season premiere. The thing was that the girl who doesn't really get into Trek said the joke and the big geeky guy who was away all summer got upset because he hadn't gotten a chance to see it yet.

Funny, but I refuse to believe a group of Trekkies like that didn't just download it or hack a site or something.

I don't watch the show, so thanks for bringing that over Nikki. Agree with you that it seems odd he didn't procure the movie by whatever means necessary.

TrekWeb.com - Production Designer Scott Chambliss on Designing the New U.S.S. Enterprise and the Possibility of Working on*Star Trek XII

Quote:
TrekMovie: Would you say doing the Enterprise inside and out was the most challenging and intimidating...

Scott Chambliss: [cutting off] Yes! Yes! And again, yes! [laughs] The outside actually came along pretty early in the game, because the whole idea that JJ [Abrams] embraced thoroughly was about using the Eero Saarinen approach-he was the futurist architect from the late 50s and 60s who designed the TWA terminal at JFK airport. I originally presented the concept of using him for inspiration simply for Starfleet Earth home base, the assembly hall, but he was so turned on by that, JJ suggested applying the concept to everything Starfleet. So that is when I really started playing with the exterior of the ship. But the interior, the bridge, all that iconic stuff, that was much more laborious.

TrekMovie: Let's assume the same team gets together for the next movie, including yourself. Have you put any thought into what you might like to do? What kind of challenges you would like to take on?

Scott Chambliss: No. I really don't think about that kind of stuff. When I am done with a project it is over, and despite having worked so often with JJ in the past, I never take it for granted that I will work on the next one. I hope every project comes together because it is people choosing the people they want to work with and the best people for the job. I wouldn't say that just because I designed the most recent Star Trek, that I am the best person for the next one.

Also the other thing that I think that is important to get across for people that are not in the biz and for people who are really passionately follow this stuff, I think there is the impression that what you see on the screen is 100% what we set out to do. Honestly, what ends up on the screen is always a miracle, because there is the script version of what you intend to make, then in production you wind up creating another version where you are collaborating with all these people who have all these different gifts, and in post-production it becomes another movie, quite different from what you thought you were making. That was certainly the case on every episode of Alias, and to a degree it was the case on Star Trek. We had this notion of the movie we were making, visually and with characters and all of that stuff. But the fullness of it, and the detail, and the strength wasn't revealed until the very long post-production process. And so when people look at a thing
like a set, like Budweiser, or they look at a performance of one of the main characters, and they go ‘that was always the intention', sometimes you dive in for the best version of what you intend to do, and you hope for the best. Sometimes it is universally accepted and appreciated, and other times it is not. Nothing about the filmmaking process is concrete from the get-go, I guess that is what I am saying.

End-of-Run Report: 'Star Trek,' 'Wolverine' Close - Box Office Mojo

Quote:
The summer's first two big movies, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Star Trek, officially ended their runs on Thursday, Oct. 1. That is to say, their distributors will no longer track them even though they might continue at a few theaters (Star Trek in particular).

Star Trek closed with a $257.7 million tally for its 147-day run, including $28.1 million from its IMAX run (which will continue at a trickle). The reboot of the venerable sci-fi franchise, which had a marketing campaign that slickly married the culturally iconic Trek with the promise of an epic, visceral adventure, ranks as the fifth-highest grossing picture of 2009 thus far.

More importantly, Star Trek stands as the highest-grossing Trek yet, soaring past Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home ($109.7 million), and is a franchise best in terms of estimated total attendance, edging out the first Star Trek movie from 1979. This feat was made all the more impressive by its rise from the ashes of the failures of the last movie (Star Trek: Nemesis) and television series (Enterprise).

Though it kicked off the summer and had a bigger opening weekend, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was quickly overshadowed by Star Trek. It wound up with $179.9 million for its 154-day run, over 47 percent of which came from its opening weekend alone, and it's the eighth highest-grossing of the year so far.

Star Trek Takes Home Top Spike Scream Awards – Shatner Makes Surprise Appearance [UPDATED | TrekMovie.com

Quote:
The Spike Scream Awards were taped in Los Angeles Saturday night (to air Tuesday October 27th). The new Star Trek movie started the night with the most nominations and walked away with a few awards, including the top prize of "Ultimate Scream" as well as Best Sci-Fi Film. And in a surprise, William Shatner appeared on stage to pick up one of Trek’s awards. Details and photos below. [UPDATE: Full list of Trek's six wins]

JJ’s Ultimate Scream (with assist by Shatner)
Star Trek led the nominations at the Spike Scream Awards with a total of 17 nominations in 15 categories. We don’t have the full list of winners and losers, but a partial list is up at AP and DreadCentral. For the seven known categories that Star Trek was nominated, it lost four, and picked up three, including Best Science Fiction Film, and Best Director for JJ Abrams. Abrams was at the event and the director award was presented to him by Harrison Ford.

One of the awards we know Star Trek didn’t pick up was for Best Actress. Zoe Saldana was outvoted by fans of Transformers star (and apparent Star Trek fan) Megan Fox.

The biggest award of the night was the "Ultimate Scream" and Star Trek was up against some stiff competition. Actor Morgan Freemen presented the award and after he announced Star Trek had won, the crowd got a surprise when William Shatner stepped onto the stage to accept the award. After taking the award, Shatner stated (via AP):

"J.J., I’ll handle this," Shatner said to J.J. Abrams, seated in the audience, who also won best director and best sci-fi movie for "Star Trek."

"This movie was big," Shatner said. "Imagine how big it could have been with me in it? … I’ll be waiting for your call."

UPDATE: Full list of Trek Wins – 6 total
Popdecay has the full list of Star Trek winners:

•Ultimate Scream
•Best Science Fiction Movie
•Best Director (JJ Abrams)
•Best Science Fiction Actor (Chris Pine)
•Best Cameo (Winona Ryder)
•Best Fight Scene (Kirk Spock bridge fight)
Red Carpet
Only one Star Trek cast member walked the red carpet at the event. Star Trek’s new Dr. McCoy Karl Urban was there.

Collider had a quick chat with Karl, where he talked about how he hoped the next Star Trek would go into production next year (apparently he hadn’t got the memo that the film release is now looking like 2012).
TrekToday Blog Archive Orci And Kurtzman Give Star Trek XII Status Update

Quote:
Posted by T'Bonz - 17/10/09 at 07:10 pm Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci spoke briefly about Star Trek XII during their appearance at the 2009 Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles today.

The duo was asked about a possible release date for the sequel. Orci said that it looked like the sequel would make its appearance in 2012, “but we’re not sure.”

According to Kurtzman, the release date changed and so the due date for the first draft changed also. “Originally we were thinking we’d have to have it by Christmas, but the release changed,” he said. “Certainly I’d say in the next eight months.”

Orci also described what the pair were doing to prepare to write a script for the sequel. “We’re in the process of re-reading some of our favorite Star Trek novels and looking at the show again,” he said. “We have some basic themes. The honest answer is we don’t know yet.”

As for young Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew? “They’re finally in their continuing adventure,” said Orci. “They’re finally established. They’re finally a crew. It will resemble more of what you’ve seen in terms of they’re already how they are.”

Oscar Watch: Star Trek picks up a significant ensemble award - HitFix.com

Quote:
To say that "Star Trek" is an underdog to make Oscar's top ten is an major understatement, but that doesn't mean the blockbuster Sci-Fi flick isn't finding awards season love.

Monday night found J.J. Abrams' reboot winning the Artios Award for best casting for a studio feature (drama) to April Webster and Alyssa Weisberg. The 25th Artios Awards are staged by the Casting Society of America in simultaneous ceremonies in both Los Angeles and New York. This isn't a major award towards the road for Oscar except that it shows the casting directors saw "Trek's" ensemble as one of its strong points. That could be a sign the film might sneak into the SAG Award's Best Ensemble race which would be another nice recognition for the rejuvinated franchise.

thanks for all the info

I've seen the film and I must say it was better than I though it would be, great surprise cameo by Leonard and I think the actors did the characters well, especially Karl as McCoy

Eric Bana did well as the baddie and I thought the plot was good

On the whole I enjoyed it

Really? Interesting. That recast was the hardest sell for me. Maybe once I get the DVD and can watch again I'll reconsider. I was quite pleased with the rest of the casting though. I found Pine & Quinto wonderful as Kirk & Spock.

I think him and Quinto were the best for me, I did have a hard time with Pine and also Pegg as Scotty, must admit.

I've heard a few people say they didn't buy Pegg as Scotty. Personally, I thought he pulled it off.

I think because I had Doohan in mind when I saw Pegg play the role, just kept thinking Scotty wouldn't be doing this
