Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

TrekWeb.com - Walter Koenig Says New Star Trek Movie Will be Excellent, Hopes Anton Yelchin Makes Chekov Role His Own

Quote:
I don't have proprietary feelings about somebody playing Chekov at the age of 19-that would be preposterous. If they cast somebody at the age of 71 playing Chekov and they didn't cast me, I might feel differently.

I wish him well. I hope he makes it his own.

Well, considering he's one of the few that actually moved on and made a role their own in another story franchise, I guess he can afford to say that.

Pix of the young Kirk and an orion slave girl are floating around TrekWeb - Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, William Shatner had them both.

Thanks Jerry. Not very clear shots, but it's nice to know that filming is actually in progress.

They have newer ones out now, a female starfleet officer in "formal" wear. I almost wonder if JJ isn't leaking these on purpose.

I'd think that giving people something to talk about to generate interest in the movie would be a good idea.

I'm so pissed off that they're doing this. They should be moving the Trek story forward, not mucking around screwing up Trek's past. Didn't they do enough of that in Enterprise?

You can't recast a character and have it really be the same character. Every actor leaves a very unique stamp on their work and on their characters. The same character played by a different actor is a different character. It's just not the same person. All the more so with a character like Spock that's so shaped by the actor. And any of the characters aren't going to be the real thing. How are we going to have McCoy without the distinctive style of DeForest Kelley? Kirk without Shatner? Do I hear it's Simon Pegg for Scotty?! This isn't going to be the real characters. Even with the best possible casting it's going to be a film populated by a lot of fakes. It's going to be one big counterfeit. They shouldn't be doing it.

sum - I would have preferred that they went with something original. But this is what we're getting so, we'll have to make the best of it. I think Enterprise finally found it's balance in the 4th/final season. Unfortunately by that point, it was too late. They had already annoyed too much of their potential audience.

And yes, it will take some adjusting to accept new actors for established characters but maybe when they're portraying younger versions as opposed to ages we're familiar with, they might be able to pull it off. They'll definitely have to make efforts to reflect what the original actors brought to the characters ... a shy, timid Kirk definitely wouldn't work for me.

Let us not forget about the reboot that they're wanting to do.

It's ok if you make them look a little different, after all, it should end up being a different universe...

I see no reason to adjust to accept new actors in the roles. we shouldn't have to do that. And the ages of the characters in the new film aren't really that far off the ages of the characters in TOS.

Reboot by screwing with the past of Trek and screwing up the characters? No thank you. They should just try to go back to where they left off before Enterprise.

As far as I know they're supposed to be the same universe, which is part of the problem, because they're just not the same characters when the actors aren't the same.

There's a lot of established fans that share your concerns sum. You can certainly choose not to go and see the film. But I don't think I'll be able to resist the temptation. I'll be too curious to see it for myself and form my own opinion.

If this should bomb, I can imagine that it will be a long time before we see anything new in the franchise.
