Ensign Ro brought needed inner conflict within the Enterprise crew, or so I feel, so I welcome her attitude as something new that we haven't seen before.

Ro was certainly unique, and interesting, I just didn't find her overly likable.

Perhaps she was not supposed to be. Although I liked her more than the first character that actress played on the show two or three years earlier.

That's what I was thinking, maybe that is the whole point of her as a character. But what role did she have on TNG before Ensign Ro?

She was in an episode where she played the daughter of a man about to be executed on his sixtieth birthday, because everyone is put to death at that age. The man was on the Enterprise working on an experiment to prolong the life of the planet's dying sun. Since he was close to success, he want his death delayed until after he completed his work and saved the planet. Of course, the government and his daughter were aghast and would rather see their world end than let the man live a few extra days.

Vaguely familiar, but can't remember the episode's title...

Good point. Thinking about it, you're probably right about that.

Apparently she was Dara in Half a Life S4E22. They must have liked her, because her first appearance as Ro was the next season S5E3.

ETA:

Quote:
The first appearance of the Bajorans, prominent race in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). Their planet Bajora was called Bajor in later shows. Also the first appearance of Ro Laren, set to become a semi-regular for the remainder of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987). The producers added her character to create some conflict amongst the friendly atmosphere of the Enterprise crew. "A Starfleet officer with a troubled past. An edge."
Quote:
Michelle Forbes appeared in the previous season's Star Trek: The Next Generation: Half a Life (1991). She was offered the role of Ro Laren because the producers were impressed by her performance in that episode.

Quote:
Originally the Romulans were to appear in the episode as Bajor's aggressors/occupiers. Rick Berman felt the Romulans were being overused, and inspired by their recent introduction in Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Wounded (1991), suggested the Cardassians instead.

So a race that appeared in on or two episodes a season was overused? A better reason to not use them would have been preferring to not have a war with the Romulans to set the stage for DS9.

I wouldn't have said that the Romulans were overused either. But space is a big place, so introducing a new villainous species made sense too.

Villainous? That is a Federation-centric view.

Since the series is Federation-centric, the statement makes sense, though.

Half a Life - Didn't that feature David Ogden Stiers?
