I agree there. I think a good script is the start of the moviemaking process. Without a decent idea, and the means to project it onscreen, all is lost.

Until audiences reach their saturation point with that particular type of movie, and something fresh comes along to start a new trend.
One of the problems with selling entertainment to sheep. In the '90s the trend was disaster movies: comets, meteors, volcanoes and earthquakes. Then it was zombies. Now earthquakes are back in fashion. I see that half the new movies this year are earthquakes in California. If only the average person liked variety, instead of the same thing until they get sick of it.

Me too. An interesting and well told story will help ensure the success of both the film and the franchise.

Variety is always nice.

I did not like the plot being too similar to an episode of TOS, but other than that, I thought it was a decent movie. Perhaps I am a bit odd.

The biggest problem with the first Trek movie, really, was a simple matter of pacing. Most of the snails in my yard move faster.

Yes, I don't think the writers had their heads around the fact that they were doing a movie, and not a television episode.

No, I don't think u r odd for liking ST:TMP. I rather like it too. Maybe not as much as some of the later films but I still like it.

The focus seemed to be more on updating the technology and Klingons than on a cinematic story. Hence the name; Star Trek The Motion Picture. (Star Trek on the big screen.) It was successful, because millions of people were waiting for the show to resume. So they felt an up-to-date two-hour television episode was worth the admission price. After the first movie, Paramount would not have been able to get away with it. It may not have been the best movie ever made, but there have been many movies much worse.

Is that not the one loaded with humour? Like Checkov finding the culprit who wore gravity or magnetic boots, but did not notice the bird/webbed/or whatever feet? And Sulu and Checkov stalking a sexy Klingon woman, until quickly turning away when a big Klingon man appeared?

Completely agree with you there.

I think all the movies are worth a watch, but some are definitely more rewatchable than others.

The magnetic boots were in VI. V is where Spock's brother takes the crew to meet "god."
