Even if Shatner does appear, I don't think it would be as good as cameo as Nimoy's was...

I'd think it'd have to be kept very small and not be an integral part of the storyline.

Now that they've established the new timeline, I'm not sure how they'll make it work. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I don't think the new Trek fans that came in with the new film would want to think of Kirk as a fat old guy with a red face. It was bad enough in Generations, when Kirk was so roly poly I wondered how he could stay on that horse. It really brought the character down. Now Kirk would look like Denny Crane of Boston Legal. That would blow a lot of young female fans' dreams, thinking that their Chris Pine character would grow into Denny Crane. Shatner is great as Crane, but I don't want that character mixed up with Kirk.

There is that. Nimoy has grown older more gracefully.

This is apart from the fact that Kirk DIED. I hope they don't screw up the story just to fit in Shatner. Maybe they could have him play Kirk's fat old uncle or something. Or his grandfather.

I'll have to suggest it to JJ Abrams next time I see him.

As entertaining as the 2009 Trek movie was, the whole "alternate time line" thing fell flat for me, given all the stories in TNG, ST:V, and Enterprise centered on the Trek Universe featuring an organization whose very purpose is protecting the time line. Where were the Federation Time Cops when our Romulan pal changed things in the movie? Don't answer that. I know: the whole idea was to reboot and make the product more accessible to a fresh fan-base, which Marvel Comics did with some success with their "Ultimate" line of comics. Thing is; nothing that takes place after Nero blowing Kirk's dad up is canonical anymore, so at this point, Kirk hasn't yet died (and more to the point, there's no reason to assume he will in the manner prescribed by 'Generations'). It makes me leery of what they're going to screw with next.

Not true. The old Trek stories are still canonical. They're just not part of the timeline the new Trek is on.

As far as the original series is concerned, yeah. It would be interesting to see them try to alter the old TV episodes. But as far as new movies, everything from the first spanking of James T. Kirk on is fair game. I'm not saying that they will change everything. I'm sure they'll keep stuff they think the Trek Faithful will cry heresy over, but, then again, they've already killed off Spock's mother (along with a healthy percentage of the Vulcan species). The stuff they decide to keep will have to be altered to fit the "new reality."
