I've heard a lot of how Leonard Nimoy feels about the Spock/Uhura romance and finally! I stumbled on Nichelle Nichol's thoughts on the pair.

She sees the hints on TOS. A lot of people say they were not canon back then and I agree with them. It wasn't canon then, but it is now.

While there were some hints at the possibility of a relationship in TOS, it was always rather vague and never followed up on.

what surprised me the most about my liking of this ship is, that in trailers for the movie (both for theater release and the tv one), was that I got the impression it would be Uhura/Kirk and I was all "oh God, please no! not the capt'n and the (only) girl"
but when I saw it was Uhura/Spock, I was all

That's true, the trailers did focus on scenes towards the beginning with Kirk & Uhuru. Of course the bedroom scene where she could hear him breathing would be something they'd use to pique interest.

I almost believe that was the purposeful set up. Some people mentioned that when they first saw Spock hugging someone they thought it was his mother he was hugging. That's the good thing about J.J. Abrams trailers; he doesn't give a lot away and what he does give away tends to hinder instead of aid.

It was Spock and Uhura's romance that got me into Star Trek in the first place. I'm not sure why really. Maybe its because I work with so many students and I was completely unimpressed what they concieved as romantic. I see Spock and Uhura's relationship and it just felt more mature. Is that wrong to say? :-)

I also remember a rather hot looking photo with Pine/Saldana that also made me think of the romance being them - was there one with Quinto/Saldana?

Must admit I was surprised at the romance between them in the film, I would have thought it would be Kirk/Uhura

I would have not enjoyed Kirk/Uhura - I'm pretty sure of it because of my first thoughts when seeing the trailer ... I alway prefer the geek getting the girl

Absolutely none of Quinto/Saldana. Interviews of them together are extremely rare too. I only found one so far, that I posted in the second Spock/Uhura thread. Maybe with this next film they might pose them together, but I don't think so. One of the things fans of the couple likeabout them is the serious, low-key nature of their relationship. Though saying that, I've been at Deviant Art long enough to know that the same fans will NOT protest a bit if a mating scene took place.
