I have to say, I don't think it's quite fair for Nimoy to tell that fan to leave for just expressing his opinion. I don't like to see a hero of mine acting like that. Freedom of speech and tolerance of opposing views, anyone?

Well, wouldn't Freedom of Speech lend itself to Nimoy too? The guy expressed himself, Nimoy disagreed and asked him to leave. Wouldn't you do the same? Besides he's made it pretty clear that he supports ZQ completely.

Freedom of speech doesn't extend to asking the guy to leave. That's where he went too far. Freedom of speech would allow him to express his own opinion, not chase people away for expressing theirs. Also, Nimoy didn't merely disagree and express his own opinion. Disagreeing would be saying Abrams and Quinto were cool. Rather, he basically told the guy to shut up, which is not cool. This is a fan of Nimoy's who's getting a slap in the face in return for being a fan. It doesn't look good. This is the sort of thing that alienates me from stars.

I think he's all for Freedom of Speech, it's the way people use that it's the problem, find if you don't agree with Nimoy's role as Spock, but there is a way to see that without being rude..

That sums up my thoughts. It was Nimoy's twitter, so I'd consider it his personal space. Nimoy didn't delete or censor the comment, just asked that it not continue.

The whole point about freedom of speech is that you're supposed to tolerate uses of it that you don't like. He still censored the guy's freedom of speech, by telling him to shut up and leave. It's an awful payback for being loyal to Nimoy's version of Spock. It makes me think that if I told Nimoy that I didn't like Quinto's Spock, whether on Twitter or at a convention or whatever, that he'd be rude to me. And that makes me feel a lot cooler towards him.

It's not an issue of Nimoy's freedom of speech, because he didn't merely express his own opinion, rather he chased someone off the Twitter and shut them up.

People here seem enthusiastic about Nimoy standing up for Quinto, but I think how a celebrity treats their fans is more important than how they stand by their workmates.

I feel like by treating that fan like that, Nimoy is effectively giving the finger to all the fans who don't like Quinto's Spock. He's showing what he thinks of us and how he'd treat us of we told him our views. It's like I'm one of a category of fans that has been rejected by Nimoy. I'm afraid that reduces my enthusiasm for Nimoy and his Spock, and indeed for Star Trek as a whole because he's been so important to my feelings about Trek. It hurts.

I agree with sum on this one. Twitter is a public forum and Nimoy's account is public. Some Trekkers don't like Abrams' revamping of Trek or Quinto's portrayal of Spock. Now, telling that to Nimoy is probably a moot point since he doesn't seem to take criticism of either very well. Which is a shame, because isn't one of the messages of Trek about being able to handle differences of opinion?

for me, it felt more like Nimoy reacting to how the fan worded his opinion but that's just me and while I agree that freedom of speech is important, that doesn't give you the right to be rude (but like I said, that's just me)
