Discovery: 1:02 - Battle at the Binary Stars - Sept 24 - Episode Discussion

From what I've read, this is being aired separately in the States on the premium All Access channel. It Canada it airs as a double episode. Since everybody might not have a chance to see it right away, I'll start a separate thread. Or do you think we should do it all in the same thread?

Yes, and I believe Europeans will be able to watch on Netflix, so it's officially aired and not a spoiler. Americans who don't subscribe to the new All Access channel won't be able to watch until it's available through other sources. Hence separating the discussions for each episode.

UK Netflix only says a new episode on Monday, so I assume we're only getting the first one... but I may be wrong.

For me, Space is included in one package above basic cable. So I am paying for it, but would be anyways, and not subscribing to a new channel.

Claire - Thanks for the info about the UK schedule.

So Netflix did have both episodes up today.

I really enjoyed the second episode. Far more than the first. The first episode was part of a two episode arc, a style I rather like, as it makes you want to keep watching.

Most of the episode was action-packed and exciting. The Federation were unprepared and naive about the Klingon threat, and lots of death and destruction ensued, but I rather liked that. There was genuine threat and enormous stakes in the battle.

My only real criticism was the Klingon's were a bit too dialogue-focused at the beginning of the episode.

The ending (again in a place where no-one puts the lights on) was good and makes me want to see more.

As long as I can watch the second right away. And yes, agree that it's nice when they take time to tell their story rather than rushing through.

Lots of action, and the Federation was definitely caught off guard.

From the info we had beforehand, I was expecting there to be more variety in the look of the different Klingon houses. It was hard to tell from the holographic versions, but they looked pretty much the same to me.

Interesting reveal about Burnham having been Sarek's ward.

Considering Burham is supposedly a lead character, it will be interesting to see how they deal with her court martial.

Not sure about Michelle Yeoh as Captain, but I'll give her a chance.

I liked that they tried to take T'Kuvma as hostage for negotiation purposes. It's unfortunate, but realistic that didn't work out.

Claire - I take your point about the darkness, and hadn't really thought about it that way.

I joked earlier that the Federation can't afford lightbulbs!

Overall enjoyed the episode. Though my subtitles wouldn't work when I was watching it... so might have to see about rewatching the Klingon scenes with them working... cause there was a lot more dialogue than I thought there would be.... and I felt like I missed a lot from only seeing one side of conversations.

Episode 3+

Spoiler:

Episode 3+

Spoiler:
I enjoyed this episode, I still don't know why the Vulcans have given her a man's name. I thought the G in the battle was good. I looks like they are trying to create a female Kirk; a maverick who plays by his/her own rules. The Klingons finding a new leader to unite the clans reminded me of Ghenghis Khan uniting the Mongol clans before his wars of conquest. Am looking for ward to the next one.

That was my impression too.

As to calling her Michael, I have known a female Michael, so it's not unheard of. It was probably more to mislead us about the casting before it aired.

Johnnie - yes, you would have missed a bit without the subtitles for the Klingon scenes.
