Best. Captain. Ever.

First off, let's acknowledge that we may have to agree to disagree here. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

For me, it's a toss up between Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway. Janeway seemed more compassionate, but Picard was more authoritative. If I had to pick one, I think that I'd go for Picard.

I might have to go with Picard as well, though I'd like to see how he'd handle being stuck in the Delta Quadrant for years.

Hmmmm, can't choose really. It's a dead heat for me between Picard, Archer, Janeway, and Kirk

My first chose would have to be Janeway. Then a tie between Archer and Picard.

I choose my Captains in a different way. Archer because he's the best looking And Picard because I love British accents! I would never pick Janeway. Somehow I never liked her even though I liked the show. I never felt an emotional connection that she really cared. I think she was a rather cold Captain. I don't think I would have liked to be a member of her crew

(woah - do you think that was enough "nevers" about Janeway? )

Nah, I think that you could have used a couple more.

OK if I really, really, really have to choose a "Best Captain", I think I'd have to go with Picard. I can't give an exact reason why, probably just over the long run of the series and seeing how the character developed. Although I have to say that STnG was the least favorite of the ST shows for me. The next best Captain would be Archer, then probably Kirk. I was never a Kirk fan, I was a Spock fan And finally I'd jump ship if I was in a crew with Janeway Unless of course I got to know Chakotay better

Since I only saw Voyager from beginning 'till the end, I'll say Janeway. I didn't like her in the early seasons, but in the last few she kind of grew on me.

Picard was cool as well.

I can't decide between Picard and Janeway. They each have pros and cons.

This may be a little off topic, but did anyone here watch Night Court? They had an episode where one of the cases was about a fight between people at a Trekkie convention type of thing, and the "crewmembers" were arguing over who was the better captain, Picard or Kirk.

I didn't see the episode, but I have heard of this debate amongst the fans. I think it just depends on what kind of personality and leadership style is preferred. The two captains are very different and the time that they come from are very different. Kirk may be appropriate for his time and Picard for his.

For sure, hands down it would have to be Picard! As far as captains go, he did have a very authoritative presence. I mean Star Fleet is like the army and Picard was very military in his rule. He was firm, yet he did have a compassionate side. His decisions were based on logic and for the good of the fleet and the crew. I really liked how they developed his character right down to the senile Picard (*snicker*) in the series finale.

Oh and that voice! Swoon!

Rob I used to watch 'Night Court' but I don't remember that eppy

Solar you have a point about different styles/ types of captains being appropriate at different times.

I love Piccard! I love the original series, but I thought Kirk was so cheesy... (Maybe it's juts because of the William Shatner school of acting ) I'll go againt the flow here and say that Janeway annoyed the heck out of me. Yeah, he could be a little over the top.
