I was thinking that they could do more character exploration of Michael Burnham. They could delve further into her past, what she went through being orphaned and what it was like growing up as a human amongst Vulcans. We got a snippet of what Spock Jr's life was like in Star Trek 2009.

Good eppy I thought

- like seeing Sarek again and delving more into the relationship between him and Michael
- so the Captain and Admiral were more than on friendly terms,.
- Stamets getting way too excited about new experiment
- Glad to see friendship growing between Lily and Michael and Michael trusting her
- So now the new guy is the security chief..
- Ooo Admiral kidnapped by the Klingons, now what is the Captain going to do about it?
- Also did holdeck's work in the time of Discovery ?

The more controversial Lorca gets, the more I like him! He surely hoped the Admiral will land into difficulties at the meeting and now he's hoping she will stay there with his secret.

- hmm, I didn't think of it that way, but you could be right. That would explain Lorca not rushing to rescue her. Guess we'll find out eventually.

Good episode!

- enjoyed the opening scene of Michael and Tilly training together. They're obviously becoming friends.
- really liked seeing Sarek again
- it was nice to see Amanda give Michael the book
- I'm liking Staments better. His fascination with the whole Katra thing was fun.
- interesting to learn that Lorca and the Admiral have a history together.
- I'm liking Ash better than I thought I would
- I thought holodecks were new in TNG?

Stamets got a personality transplant from those spores! LMAO!! Lorca's face during that scene! LOL!

Lorca and the Admiral..... Nice backstory for them. too bad it ended with a phaser to her neck.

Michael calling Sarek "Father" just made the episode for me! IDK why!

Just finished watching this. I really enjoyed this episode. I'm loving how the crew is starting to gel and develop relationships with each other, it's nice!

I found myself really liking Ash in this episode.

The backstory with Sarek was interesting. The moral dilemma he had, and the idea of other Vulcans being prejudiced against Spock as well as Michael, was an interesting idea and is nice to see in Star Trek.

As soon as the Admiral said she'd remove Lorca's command when she got back, I thought: 'she's dead'. I wasn't entirely right, but she is in deep trouble and the Captain doesn't seem too keen to rescue her.

I thought the same thing about holodecks, but as a lot of the technology is based around holograms, in this version of the future, it doesn't bother me. All the different shows show a version of the future which is influenced by the current technology of the time in which they are made. That's just the way they go.

Agree. And that he had to make a choice between Michael & Spock that he still feels guilty about.

You have a point there. And since I'm used to seeing holodecks in the franchise, it doesn't seem too out of place. Perhaps this was a more basic version of a holodeck?

I agree with this completely. He was definitely hoping something bad would happen to her on her mission. I had my suspicions as soon as he suggested that she take Sarek's place. He confirmed my suspicions when he didn't go right after her to rescue her. Even Saru was taken aback by his refusal to attempt a rescue. He is hoping that Starfleet will not feel that a rescue mission is necessary from the Discovery. He has never had a problem rescuing anyone else before.

I would love to see more of Michael's past as well

This really surprised me. You would think that the Admiral - being a Doctor and possibly even a psychologist - would know that Lorca was dangerous and that she should stay away. Ultimately it may cost her her life since she is now in the hands of the Klingons

They definitely should not have been on the ship. I wonder if the holodecks are one of the many experiments being conducted on the Discovery. I think they said there were 60 independent experiments. It would explain why it was on the Discovery but not on other ships in the fleet

Me too! He seemed way less shady in this ep.

yes! that was such a pivotal scene between them. I don't think that I have heard her call Sarek father before. I think the balance of power is changing between them and Michael is starting to see him as more of a father figure now than a mentor.

I agree. It was surprising to see them as prejudiced because being prejudiced against someone based on their heritage and DNA is about as unlogical as you can get. Prejudice is based on a lot of emotion

I think what kills him most is that he took the spot from Michael to give it to Spock and in the end Spock refused it. I think he blames himself for where Michael is today as a mutineer and labeled at the one who started the way. I think he wonders if Michael would have gone through the program she would not have been in Starfleet and would not have been on the front line at the start of the war. Her life would be completely different and more in line of what Sarek wanted for her. I don't think he wants her life to be the way it is now. Plus knowing that she failed Sarek and wasn't able to get into the academy also had a profound effect on her life and future choices.

I think the fact that she now knows she did not fail Sarek on Vulcan is why they had such a dramatic power shift balance in their last scene together in the ep.

This is true. Though she was the one to bring up him doing things like this without authorization as a bad thing... He just happened to choose the most opportune time to follow her advice. I got a feeling that Starfleet might not authorize it either, though I guess they could... I guess we will find out later if they do or not.

Good point! The Vulcans have always been portrayed as considering themselves superior to Humans. Part of that would be pride, but again, they're not as logical as they'd like to think.

Absolutely. That decision had a lasting effect on both of them.

Yes, Lorca is proving that he likes to look out for himself.

oh, that was to Ash in reference to Michael, wasn't it? Lorca obviously feels that Michael is a valuable asset to his crew.
