Top 5 reasons why you should book your cinema ticket for About Time
Aug 7th 2013, 19:00 | By Anjali Mandalia

Richard Curtis' newest rom-com is guaranteed to impress...

Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) is a 21-year-old who discovers that he can travel in time. So far, so corny.

But after a tipsy New Year's party, Tim's father (Bill Nighy) tell his son a secret - that the men in the family have always had the ability to travel in time. Tim can't change who he is, so he decides to use his ability for the greater good - to get a girlfriend!

When he moves to London to train as a lawyer, he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) a beautiful but insecure woman who he's instantly smitten with. As they fall in love, an unfortunate incident means that they've never met at all...

With loads of love and laughs, About Time is sure to be one of the biggest romantic-comedies of the year.

We've rounded up five reasons why we can't wait for the film to hit UK cinemas on 4 September...

1. King of rom-com's Richard Curtis writes and directs

You may have heard of oh, little films, kind of small, like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones' Diary and Love Actually. Sound familiar? Seriously, we're in love with these movies and now Richard Curtis is back with more British charm, plenty of laughs and geeky-but-adorable characters.

2. It's got an all-star British cast

Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander and newcomer Domhnall Gleeson (he played Bill Weasley in Harry Potter) star in this new flick. Plus there's that rom-com heroine and all-round Hollywood superstar...

3. Rachel McAdams.

Romantic leading lady Rachel McAdams is at the heart of this time travelling tale, which is weirdly similar to The Time Traveller's Wife. She's already won us over with The Notebook, The Vow and To the Wonder. The Notebook is our ultimate favourite, of course! Who can resist Noah...in the pouring rain...with that beard. Swoon!

4. It's set in London.

The main character, Tim Lake, moves from the Cornish coast to London to become a lawyer so there's lots of relaxed-coast-meets-busy-city story telling. London is the perfect setting for that typical kiss in the rain when the lovers see each other after a long time. You know what we mean...

5. It's not just a rom-com. There's a serious 'can't change the past' element to it.

About Time isn't another cheesy rom-com that'll make you cringe into your popcorn. It's got a clear sci-fi element. We're not talking Star Trek-style, but if you loved The Time Traveller's Wife or Midnight in Paris (funnily enough Rachel's in that too...) or even the classic Groundhog Day, then this is definitely for you.

Domhnall Gleeson climbs his way to the Hollywood A-list
Caitlin McBride – 09 August 2013

THE son of legendary actor Brendan Gleeson, Domhnall, joined Rachel McAdams for his latest film premiere.

Irish actor Domhnall is celebrating his first major Hollywood role, alongside actress Rachel McAdams. The pair star in the romantic comedy About Time, and stepped out to promote the film together at the world premiere in London.

The acting duo were the star attractions at last night's red carpet event, held at Somerset House. Domhnall opted for classic elegance in a grey suit and navy tie, while his co-star wore Roksanda Ilincic top, skirt, and belt, Casadei shoes, and Norman Silverman earrings.

The young actor is earning rave reviews for his role in About Time, in which he plays the geeky Londoner who learns he can travel back in time. However, with the world at his fingertips, he his only goal is to find a girlfriend (played by McAdams).

The Independent has described him as "a subtle performer who will surely go on to great things". He has a slew of high profile projects coming up including a film alongside his famous father, Calvary, a major role in Frank alongside Michael Fassbender and Maggie Gyllenhaal and Brooklyn.

It's been a week of premieres for Gleeson, who stepped out on Wednesday night for the first screening of Amanda Seyfried's Lovelace, along with his co-star Rachel McAdams.

Having one of the most recognisable in the Irish film industry comes with its downside however as Domhnall revealed that he is regularly asked to pass things onto his father.

It's About Time you saw this Richard Curtis movie mash-up
Watch a video montage of the best bits from Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Curtis's latest romcom About Time
Susanna Lazarus - 2:31 PM, 12 August 2013

If you're a fan of Richard Curtis, this will take just three minutes of your time and we promise it'll be well worth it...

Ahead of the September release of his new film, About Time, Universal have picked some slushy music (Ellie Goulding's How Long Will I Love You), their favourite clips from some of Curtis's greatest hits (Four Weddings, Notting Hill and Love Actually) and concocted a feel-good montage for your viewing pleasure.

Yes, it's a handy publicity tool and yes, it does put you through the ordeal of Rhys Ifans in his underpants yet again, but if you want to re-live Andie MacDowell's rain-soaked kiss, Bill Nighy's striptease and a whole lot of weddings (and Hugh Grant, of course) this makes for an ideal afternoon treat. Enjoy...

'About Time' Soundtrack Features The Killers, The Cure, Amy Winehouse, Nick Cave & More
by Kevin Jagernauth - August 16, 2013 10:18 AM

With Richard Curtis' upcoming romantic comedy adding a little time travel tweak to the proceedings, it perhaps follows that the accompanying soundtrack is a bit scattershot. There isn't much in the way of contemporary hits, but whatever was rockin' your dial a few years ago—or even a few decades ago—has made its way into the movie.

Feeling like some sugary, manufactured pop? This forthcoming disc has you covered with tunes by Russian one-hit wonders t.A.T.u (guess which song?) and Brit sensations Sugababes. The Cure and Nick Cave bring some veteran experience to the table, while The Killers, Ellie Goulding and Amy Winehouse (R.I.P.) bring it home for the kids. Ben Folds reminds everyone he's still around with a new version of "The Luckiest" while we're just glad to see Ron Sexsmith in the mix as well.

"About Time" opens on September 6th in the U.K. and November 1st in the U.S., with the soundtrack dropping across the pond on September 2nd. We'd reckon a U.S. version is in the works too, but no details on that just yet.

"About Time" Soundtrack Tracklisting
01 Ben Folds - The Luckiest (About Time Version)
02 Jon Boden, Sam Sweeney & Ben Coleman - How Long Will I Love You
03 Paul Buchanan - Mid Air
04 Groove Armada - At The River
05 The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
06 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
07 Ron Sexsmith - Gold In Them Hills
08 Nick Laird-Clowes - The About Time Theme
09 Nick Cave - Into My Arms
10 Jimmy Fontana - Il Mondo
11 Nick Laird-Clowes - Golborne Road
12 The Killers - Mr. Brightside
13 Sugababes - Push The Button
14 Tatu - All The Things She Said
15 Barbar Gough - When I Fall In Love
16 Sebastien Klinger, Jürgen Kruse - Spiegel Im Spiegel
17 Ellie Goulding - How Long Will I Love You

For About Time, however, she is careful to clarify that she spent quality time with co-star Gleeson beforehand (“He’s delightful"), going to Jordanian restaurants and “hashing out the characters’ back stories". The result, perhaps unsurprisingly, is some convincingly heartfelt chemistry in a movie that immerses itself in the giddy flush of true love (very Richard Curtis) while purporting to be about time travel. Here, Tim’s father, gamely played by Bill Nighy, delivers the movie’s high concept in the opening act — namely, that the male side of the family have the ability to travel backwards in time — and then subsequently sits back and watches the plot unfold, as a so-called Typical Richard Curtis Comedy (eccentric English lovables in supporting roles, London property porn, tons of posh white people) is put through the time-travelling mill. And though the narrative results are occasionally mixed (the time-travel rulebook appears to be very flexible indeed), McAdams and Gleeson hold the movie’s focus, both as the couple struggling for young love against increasingly bizarre obstacles (one of Gleeson’s time trips changes the sex of their baby), and as the couple, says McAdams, “that you want the audience to root for, all the time".

She was drawn to playing Mary, her About Time character, not because here was yet another luminous femme to add to her résumé, but, she says, because the role, and Curtis, allowed her to go “messy and difficult". We segue directly, and perhaps tellingly, into the paucity of meaty screen roles for actresses in contemporary cinema. Unfortunately, she says, “there are only so many really juicy parts to go around, so sometimes you have to try and make the less juicy ones a bit more juicy".
