~* Sam & Diane *~

Sam and Diane had an on and off relationship on the sitcom Cheers. Sam Malone is the ex-baseball player, recovering alcoholic, and womanizing bartender who owns Cheers. Diane Chambers is the post graduate, highly educated, and well bred woman who started to work as a barmaid in Cheers because she was dumped by her fiancee, and also professor, Sumner Sloan. Sumner left Diane for his ex-wife, and Sam offered her a job as a waitress in Cheers. Throughout the first season Sam and Diane had an incredible amount of sexual tension and chemistry that was visible and obvious to the audience, and this held true all throughout the series (excluding the seasons Diane wasn't in, which were seasons 6 through 10 - she comes back for three episodes in season 11). Sam would make passes at Diane, they would flirt, fight, argue, and finally kiss in the final episode of the first season. Then throughout the second season, they were a couple and made unforgettably funny television. In the final episode of season 2 the couple have a huge arguement, literally slap each other, and then grab each other by the noses. Finally, Diane is fed up with Sam, and she leaves. She checks into an insane asylum to "rest", while Sam starts drinking and womanizing again. They are both complete messes. Diane is concerned about Sam's health so she comes back to Cheers and brings her boyfriend, and also psychiatrist, Dr. Frasier Crane. Sam gets better, and Diane starts working at Cheers again. Even though Sam and Diane are broken up, the sexual tension and flirtation, along with a little resentment, is still there. Diane goes to Europe with Frasier, where he proposes to her. Diane then calls Sam before accepting Frasier's proposal, only in the end to leave him at the alter. Afterwards, Diane enters an abbey where she is visited by Sam. He again asks her to come back to Cheers. Diane accepts Sam's offer, causing the flirtation to return. At the end of season 4, Sam calls Diane and asks her to marry him. She says that she would rather him ask her in a more romantic way. Sam agrees to propose more romantically and does, but Diane declines. Later, he asks her again, she says no, causing Sam to try and kill her. Sam ends up in a courtroom where he has to propose to Diane or go to jail. He proposes for a third time and she finally accepts. Sam and Diane are engaged for the last half of season 5, and then in the season finale they have their wedding in the bar. Before the wedding, Diane is offered a book deal, but she says no, she wants to marry Sam. Sam insists that she go and write the book and come back in six months. Diane agrees, but doesn't come back until six years later.

Sam Malone was played by the wonderful Ted Danson. He has been in such movies as "Body Heat", "Three Men and a Baby", "Three Men and a Little Lady", "Saving Private Ryan", and "A Fine Mess". He has a recurring guest starring role on Larry David's "Curb your Enthusiasm", and had his own series on CBS called "Becker".

Diane Chambers was played by the extraordinary Shelley Long. Her movies include "Caveman", "Night Shift", "Loosing It", "The Money Pit", "Outrageous Fortune", "Troop Beverly Hills", "Freaky Friday", "Susie Q", "The Brady Bunch Movie", "A Very Brady Sequel", and "Dr. T and the Women". She was on the sketch comedy series "Laugh In", and briefly had her own sitcom called "Kelly Kelly".
