Just some wild speculation here, but I wonder if since Rumple is willing to darken his heart to save his son’s heart, if he will become so dark that his appearance will change to the way it was when he was in the EF? Perhaps at this point he will become so dangerous/out of control that he either learns to control the darkness as Merlin foresaw or be destroyed by it? Or Belle/Gideon rescues him with TLK and this time he allows it, choosing love over power?

The way we knew Rumple was losing his powers in Skin Deep was to see him reverting back to a man until it was interrupted. Perhaps if we see him transforming from beast back into man, we’ll see that he has truly changed within?

I’m not sure I like my theory LOL cuz in 4B his heart was almost completely black and he still looked like a man, but thought I’d throw this out there to see what you think...

I doubt that will happen since Rumple's heart was white and pure when he became the DO again, and it took "centuries of dark deeds" to darken it to the point it was in 4B.
