K a t e Austen
Kate Austen was born to run. When Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on September 22nd, 2004,
a pair of handcuffs was found washed up in the debris. A few hours earlier, they were fastened
around Kate’s wrists, as she sat next to the U.S. Marshall on the plane. What was her crime?
She blew up her stepfather. She has gone through almost her entire life both running and
lying, and as the Marshall told her before she got on the plane; she has "no attachments." Nobody
to care about, or at least nobody to care enough about to stay in one place. It’s arguable that
the crash is the best thing that happened to Kate. She got a chance to start over. It was revealed
that she’s actually a strong-willed, independent, kick-ass woman who knows how to handle
a gun and beat up the bad guys better than almost anybody on the entire island. And yet at
the same time, she has a softer side, a vulnerable side that she only shows in certain situations,
around certain people, one person in particular. When she crashed on the island, she finally
had a home. And in that home, she found love, acceptance, and a reason to stand still. On
December 24th, 2004, Kate and five other islanders were rescued. At home she has come to
the realization that she has only Aaron. Off island, she has become the liar she once was. She yet
again put on a mask, a charade to make people believe she was someone other than who she
truly was. But Kate can only “pretend” for so long.

J a m e s Ford
aka Sawyer.
James “Sawyer” Ford went through his life seeking revenge for a conman who ruined his
life, and in the process, he became a conman himself. “I became the man I was hunting.” He never
cared about anything except money. His life has been full of meaningless flings with all kinds
of different women, all for the common goal of gaining their husbands’ money. The only thing
that ever seemed to have meaning to him was a single letter that he wrote as a boy to the man he
was determined to kill. When flight 815 crashed, he was being deported back to the states from
Australia. He became the enemy among the fellow islanders, the “bad guy,” the “troublemaker,”
the “jackass.” There was only one person on the island, a fellow outcast, who he ever listened
to, who he ever did anything for, who he ever opened up to. His connection with her transformed
him, brought out who he truly was in the inside, showed what he was really made of. Despite his
attempts to get people to hate him because he felt like he deserved it, and even though he retaliated
with comments like “I ain’t no hero,” he is indeed the saviour of all those left on the island. At the
beginning he was called a parasite, “always taking, never giving.” Three months later, he was
jumping off a helicopter, ruining his chance at getting off the island, not to mention risking his life,
all to save the woman he loved. He’s a scoundrel and a hero, a fighter and a lover. And we know
that the love that transformed him will one day return to him, and he will be whole again.

The S t o r y

From the moment he called her “sweetheart” for the first time,
it was clear that James Ford and Kate Austen had something.
He had been with girls like her, he told her. But not girls exactly like her,
she responded. And thus began the amazing, frustrating, rocky,
enthralling relationship between the two outcasts.
In the fugitive’s mind, she should be a good woman,
and in order to be a good woman, she needed a good man.
And a good man wasn't a conman like Sawyer.
But as the days passed, her heart would not allow her to stray away from him.
As their time on the island progressed,they shared everything together,
from the most passionate kisses, to their deepest, darkest secrets.
It hasn’t always been easy, but the best love stories never are.
Their relationship is something real, something that is a true joy to watch.

When they crashed on the island, they were strangers,
whose one similarity was that they were lost.
Or.. at least that's what it seemed like at first glance.
Behind all of their fronts, and lies..
they really aren't all that different when it comes down to it.
They both happened to be deported back to the US on the same flight, that same day.
But when they found each other, they found themselves.

Sawyer loves her unconditionally, and he will always love her,
matter what her past looks like and no matter what her future holds.
Kate sees right through Sawyer’s tough exterior, she always has,
but she also sees into James’s heart, which beats only for her.
She makes him a better person, and he gives her a reason to
believe again. Their salvation lies in each other’s love.

Those words sum up Skate perfectly. They didn't have to pretend
to be someone they aren't, they didn't need to to run away,
they felt comfortable around each other. They didn't hide,
they weren't afraid to show their true nature because
they knew they would be accepted and loved. They were drawn
to each other from the beginning. Kate saw Sawyer's real nature
from the start, Kate could never fool Sawyer. Their relationship was
about trust and mutual respect. Sawyer never judged Kate,
never wanted her to change and Kate never felt like she
needed to change, for the first time in her life she felt loved
for who she was. They were on the run their entire life,
when they met, they found comfort in each other and it felt like home.

Sawyer and Kate were the little spitfire of LOST.
Definetely. They got the whole package since day one; the chemistry,
the up's and downs, the push and pull they kept during for most part of the
show, the first sexual tension, the first i love you, the first love making
and for God sakes: A SOUNDTRACK THEME. It was enticing to see them,
it broke the cliche story we get every single day 'badgirl/boy
with goodgirl/boy'. They were both outsiders, not fitting in any place..
cause they later found out the only place they could definetely
fit in was with each other, without the conning without the running
they could definetely bethemselves with each other, there was
no need to be better or live up to anything, cause they
were the same, flaws and all.

I don't remember Kate smiling much at all in season 6. Those two screencaps show her smile, but it was very brief when you watched the episode.

She only smiled and looked happy in the finale scenes with Jack.

I guess those were the directions E. Lilly got. If actors on Lost even got directions. It seems like they made many decisions on their own.

Kate didn't have much to smile about in S6 - - none of the Losties did, really. It was a dreary, hopeless, directionless (not to mention stupidly pointless) season.

However, Kate's tendency to want to stay in Sawyer's shadow was one of the bright spots. Once again she was at his side, nursing him back to health. When he went off on another of his "I don't care" self-destructive trips, she was right behind him, going so far as to lie (to her ex-fiance, no less!) her way out of the temple. She was worried about Sawyer, and she wanted his help in 'figuring things out together'...Jack's mission be damned (one has to wonder why she didn't even bother to come clean with Jack about wanting to find his sister!) And when she realized that she had lost Sawyer forever, she broke down completely, sobbing her heart out on the dock.

Hell, even after their no-doubt-tragic-at-some-random-point-in-the-future-that-we-weren't-privy-to deaths, when Kate and Sawyer got stuck in whatever that dumbass limbo was that Jack created in his own narcissistic mind - - they were still the two who were drawn to each other. Just as Jack found Juliet (and created a child with her) - - Kate and Sawyer found each other.

Don't you think it's weird--you and me being on the same flight, having that little meet-up in the elevator? And a week later--boom, of all the ~~gin~~ ~~joints~~ cars in Los Angeles, you ~~walk~~ smash into mine. Almost like someone's trying to put us together.

Yeah. That was probably not meant to be an obvious nod to Casablanca's Rick/Ilsa or anything. You know, one of the greatest love stories of all time. 'cause, why would they use something like that in Skate dialogue?

And dead or no, they still had each other's numbers.

Unfortunately, Damon Lindelof had some amateurish desire to pull a final "GOTCHA!" on the audience - either that, or he was simply desperate to try and please all the shipper groups - and so Sawyer and Kate were denied one small thing in their dead!zone: Their Spark of "rememberance." And I think we all know exactly why it was denied them; because had it happened, there'd have been no turning back, and certainly no way to explain why Sawyer would have wanted Juliet (who he let die because of his love for Kate), or why Kate would have wanted Jack (who never learned to trust her and abandoned her umpteen times during life.)

Sawyer and Kate would have remembered their love for one another, the time they spent together - swimming at the waterhole; playing their 'I Never' game as they dug deeper into each other; searching the beach for one another to say goodbye before the raft launched, and disappointed when they missed each other; Kate's desperation to see Sawyer back to health, nursing him night and day, making herself crazed from sleeplessness and worry; their terrifying time together in captivity with the Others, the abuse Sawyer took for her, Kate's fear for Sawyer's life; the beautiful, memorable moment when all walls between them collapsed, and Kate made love to him; how often the two of them offered their own lives for one another, how often they had each others' backs with no words needed being spoken, the trust that grew between them as they fought - and succeeded - to survive together.

All of those memories, from over the course of the series, would have been edited together, flooding both of them. And from that moment, it'd have been "Jack/Juliet WHO?" It would have been the only logical path for the story to take.

But, for whatever reason, Damon didn't want to go with the logical...he wanted one last "GOTCHA!" to try & pull on the audience, no matter how nonsensical or comically absurd it was going to be. So Skate got the series, the full development and journey; Jack and Kate, Sawyer and Juliet got the destination - - a dead!wet-dream/afterlife, held back until the final 30 minutes of the finale.

Gotta say, I know which one I'd choose.

I remember how when Sawyer blamed himself for Juliet's death (which was technically right, one of the main reasons why she died was Sawyer not being able to convince her that he loves her more or at least just as much as Kate) and was going into a desperate, self-piting hole, Kate was right there for him, trying to help him. Compare it to how she just abandoned Jack in the middle of the road in a totally hysterical state, drunk and desperate, not even making sure that he gets home safe.

I keep wondering why did Jack even think that Kate was good for him? They were not even good friends. In fact, they didn't even like each other and didn't really try to hide it. Why exactly would Jack want to be with Kate and to end up with HER in his wet dead dream, knowing that he was always second best for her, repeatedly abandoned by her, one last time to death? Something tells me that Damon Lindeloff was trying to say something there that was very personal and we will never understand.

In season 6 Kate was mostly about finding Claire ion the island and she somehow looked like she didn't care about anything else. I saw those smiles, but for me they just can't compare to some happy looks she gave Sawyer in earlier seasons. For example, the "You taste like strawberries" scene. Those earlier scenes felt more sincere to me. But I'm not a fan of season 6 so that might cloud my view of season 6 Skate too.

I think it's funny how Kate left Jack several times in the last season to go and look for Claire and no big deal was made in any of those situations.

But then the finale came and writers suddenly remembered that she should at least show that she loves Jack and is sorry to leave him on the island. Sloppy writing, i think.

As IceKat055 said, the only purpose was to mess with people and then pull a Gotcha in the finale.

True, but of course writers didn't make her STAY there with him on that island

She was just sorry, for the first time, about abandoning him. I guess because this time she was abandoning him to death and she knew it.

As for Skate in season 6, they pretty much were the only good part and even those few moments they shared only highlighted how perfect they were for each other.

The writers told her it was the finale so she had to react.

As far as she knew Jack could've died even after those previous scenes in which thy parted ways.

Yeah, she abandoned him before that too, but this time she knew for sure that he dies and still left him. I don't think that even friends should do it, let alone ~ soulmates

Soulmates would help each other through the darkest times and break downs, soulmates would hold on to each other when they have nothing to hold on to, soulmates would trust each other when they cannot trust anybody else - like Skate.

That cap from season 2 reminded me how badass Sawyer and Kate were together from early on. They had each other's back with no previous arrangements and testings needed.

Exactly. Show against tell. Skate were always about showing. Time and time again we SAW their loyalty to each other, their love for each other and because of those things both Jate and Suliet fell apart - because of Kate's loyalty to Sawyer and Sawyer's love for Kate that never faded away.

Kate thought the others were going to kill Sawyer what she did??? she fought she tried him to leave, he didn't want to go she stayed
once again she tried the cage was open they would have tried but what she did? she stayed all night in his arms...never leave him

Exactly, never for once Kate left Sawyer's side, she never abandoned him nor emotionally niether physically. When Sawyer was about to be killed she fought for him, she risked her life to make him keep fighting (but he was willing to sacrifice his life for her. That was the real Sawyer with Kate compared to Jimmy La flear who let Juliet die just because he couldn't make her believe he loves her), when he was injured she spent hours at his bedside, when he was broken and desperate she was there to support him. Compare it to all those times when Kate didn't give a damn about Jack being dead or alive, being in trouble or not, abandoned him to death literally and witnessed his emotional break down but couldn't care less & ran away as she usually did.
