Lady Mary Crawley ღ Matthew Crawley Downton Abbey Thread Nine Because they are the future Earl & Countess of Grantham.       An appreciation thread for the epically amazing Mary and Matthew from Downton Abbey. The show is a brilliant and awesome period drama set in a great house in early 20th century Yorkshire. It follows the lives of the great Grantham family and the servants and has recently won 6 Emmy's, been put in the Guiness Book of Records for the most critically acclaimed TV Show and has broken Amazon's DVD boxset records!  Lady Mary and Matthew are distant cousins (4th), hence they share the same surname. When Mary's finance (and the heir to her father's earldom and estate) drowns on the Titanic, Matthew Crawley becomes the new heir presumptive and moves to Downton to learn the ropes.  In the style of Pride and Prejudice, and any decent hate to love romance, Mary and Matthew do not get on at all at first. It doesn't help that Mary sees Matthew as stealing her inheritance (as she's rightful, if not lawful, heir) and that she overhears him insulting her when they are first introduced. As they get to know each other though, they thaw towards each other and begin to fall in love. The second series has recently started and Mary and Matthew have a strong focus - although so far it's been full of heartbreak and angst and rollercoaster ride of emotions! Thank you Sarah! I sort of introduced myself in the previous thread, anyway I'm a HUGE Mary/Matthew shipper. Following their story has been quite a rollercoaster to my poor heart!

 Shipping MM is really such a rollercoaster ride with so many heartbreaking and bittersweet moments, but it's all worth it IMO.  __________________

The Christmas Special was the cherry in the top!
I've seen the proposal dozens of times but most of all I'm pleased on how Matthew acted and reacted all the time: he was exactly how I wanted him to be. |

What did you like about the proposal?
I loved almost everything: - Matthew's almost cracking voice when he asked "So are you relly going to America" and "Would you stay, if I asked you to?" (and the fangirl in me squeed because it brought me back to 1x07). - Matthew smirking at Mary's oppositions (Pamuk, the vows to Lavinia) and about the fact that she doesn't need his forgiveness (you've lived your life, and I've lived mine! How clever it was! Let's just put away the past!) - Mary was so sweet when looking afraid that this could not really happen and that Matthew really didn't care about Pamuk, or at least that thing didn't change the high opinion he has of her. - Mary looking exactly like a happy child when asking Matthew to do things properly: she know this will be the definitive proposal, and it has to be in the right way. She is such a romantic! - And finally when they twirled and laughed with happiness bursting out of every single pore! |

But what got me the most was the look on Mary's face when Matthew proposed and the look on Matthew's face when she accepted. Both looked so completely happy!I think it was the best proposal I've ever seen on television. |

I thought the proposal was a great cap, and hopefully they don't delay stuff and just get onto the wedding. After seeing a bed scene of Bates and Anna's wedding night (I honestly hadn't expected it!), now I know we'll going to have to see an MM wedding and wedding night scene! Crazy MM Utube moment: I saw the end of Gravity of Love and didn't even recognize Michelle with Dan in their gorgeous Evening Standard pic. I was like, Are they trying to do Twillight? I VERY VERY much hope for a wedding episode, and I have the feeling that this would get the higher viewers rating for DA! :-)
If I remember right, the third season starts quite after the end of the CS, so if they are doing the wedding I gather it won't be straight in episode 1 what you think? Maybe ep 1 will be about preparations, Sybil and Branson coming home for the wedding and so on. Maybe they will have a quiet wedding, nothing lavish...that would depend on what Carlisle is doing, will he publish the story or not? We shall see! |
