Quotes

Kevin on Whitney:

“It's very easy to fall in love with Whitney.”

“I remember looking at Whitney and I said, “Oh man, this girl, really. She just really has it.”
This is not race. This is just about good, old-fashioned chemistry...boy-girl stuff.”

“At her essence, Whitney was a really good person.”

“I promised her two things -- that I would be right there with her, and she would not be bad.”

“Whitney and I had a lot in common.”

“A lot of leading men could have played my part, a lot of guys could have filled that role.
But you Whitney, I truly believe, were the only one who could have played Rachel Marron
at that time.”

“Whitney, if you could hear me now I would tell you, you weren't just good enough,
you were great.” “People didn't just like you, Whitney, they loved you.”

“I urge us all...to dry our tears, suspend our sorrow and perhaps our anger just long enough,
to remember the sweet miracle of Whitney”...“Sing your hearts out,
knowing that there is an angel in Heaven making God Himself wonder
how He made something so perfect.”

“Off you go Whitney, off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your Heavenly Father,
when you sing before Him, don't you worry you'll be good enough.”

“That was big. It was like a...kind of a score to our life together a little bit...
People were suffering, the people closest to her were truly, truly suffering, and that song kind of...
it did kind of bring everything back together, but it was an absolute goodbye.”

“A couple of times over the years I called radio stations that were on her pretty hard,
asking the deejay to look at it in a different light. And at a couple of critical moments in her life,
I was asked by a close friend to write her a letter. And I did. I don’t know if she ever read them.”

“I was writing [my eulogy] on the plane, in the limo, in bed. It was important.
When I first walked into that church, it was electric, man.”

“I started [speaking] with the idea that sometimes
what you think life will be it won't be at all,
and about what was real between Whitney and me,
what we talked about—being in church when we were little,
both getting in trouble, about our not wanting to be preachers...
I wanted to impart a bit of the Whitney that I knew,
and maybe people could think about her in a different way.”

“I think about Whitney a little bit the way I think about the Kennedys.
I know there’s trouble, but I choose to think about a lot of other stuff.
The trouble is as real as the achievement, but it does not tarnish it.”

“You don't do that for everybody. And it was a pretty seminal moment for Whitney.”
“I took Whitney in my arms and kissed her, not as a black woman but as a beautiful woman.
That’s how I saw her.”

“She was a very important person to me and the world has connected us
in a way that we'll never not be.”

Whitney on Kevin:

“It was really nice, really a joy to work with Kevin,
and it had a lot to do with his personality.
He is down-to-earth; he doesn't trip. He's into his work.
And he's very kind, he's effective and he's considerate.”

“That was more exciting for me than the actual idea that he is this hunk
Kevin Costner. Yes, he's a hunk and he's sexy.
We all know that, but that's not what I was looking for.”

“We kind of made a deal. He loves to sing, he loves music.
Okay, Kevin -- I'll help you with your singing if you help me with the acting.”

“He was kind enough, and gracious enough, to ensure that I was comfortable,
being that it was my first film, he understood that, and he knows what it can be like
to be doing your first film so he was really kind and very... very kind!”

“How do I know I can act? I've never done it before!
But Kevin said, “You can do it, I know you can do it, I just know you can.”
I was like, “This man has more faith in me than I have faith in myself.”
Oh, he was a tremendous help...I mean, he made me feel so comfortable about acting,
and he made it look and seem so easy, you know,
and little bits and pieces he gave me helped me so much.
Kevin was so great.”

“What is Kevin Costner really like? Well, I can tell you this - I was blessed.
Kevin cares...Kevin really cares.”

“If I have one friend in Hollywood, it's Kevin.”

H e i g h t: 6' 1" (1.85 m)
O c c u p a t i o n: Actor, director, producer and singer
Kevin was born in Lynwood, California, on January 18, 1955, the third child of Bill Costner, a ditch digger and ultimately an electric line servicer for Southern California Edison, and Sharon Costner. He has 2 older brothers (middle brother died at birth) and was raised Baptist. Costner was not academically inclined. Rather, he enjoyed sports, took piano lessons, wrote poetry and sang in the First Baptist Choir. He has stated that a viewing of the film How the West Was Won at the age of seven had "formed" his childhood. At 18, he built his own canoe and paddled his way down the rivers that Lewis & Clark followed to the Pacific. Despite his present height, he was only 5'2" when he graduated high school. Nonetheless, he still managed to be a basketball, football and baseball star. In 1973, he enrolled at California State University at Fullerton, where he majored in business. (more info here)

Whitney began singing in the choir at her church, The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, as a young child and by the age of 15 was singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khan's 1978 hit, 'I'm Every Woman'. She went on to provide backing vocals for Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson and her own mother and worked briefly as a model, appearing on the cover of 'Seventeen' magazine in 1981.

Her debut album, 'Whitney Houston', was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by a debut artist. Several hit singles, including 'Saving All My Love For You', 'How Will I Know', 'You Give Good Love', and 'The Greatest Love of All', were released from the album, setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US number ones. The album itself sold 3 million copies in its first year in the US and went on to sell 25 million worldwide, winning her the first of her six Grammies. (more info here)

A Glimpse Into Two Worlds: Kevney
written by SaffaGirl

God gave Whitney a glimpse of what her life would be like had she married someone with Kevin's character. He gave her a glimpse of what it would be like to be loved unconditionally, a glimpse of what it is like to be respected by a man, a glimpse of what it is like to be treated like a lady, a glimpse of what it is like to be given compliments, a glimpse of what it is like to be accepted for who you are. I firmly believe that Kevin had discernment when he saw the script of the Bodyguard, and he knew in his heart of hearts that Whitney should be his leading lady, but at the same time he could not understand why. He could have sat on his own, questioning God as to why he had the strong urge to have her act alongside of him - he went against all odds to have her, even decided to wait ONE WHOLE YEAR for her to complete her tour. The glimpse she saw about Kevin she might have never experienced it before with any other man that she might have been in a relationship with, and maybe just maybe she did not know how to embrace such love and respect; recalling she was already in a relationship with the other person. She had a glimpse of what it is like to be transparent with Kevin and to see his transparency as well, a glimpse of showing her vulnerable side yet being told "it is okay".

Kevin was already in a marriage when he strongly wanted her to act with him, she had already entered and seen the glimpse of the world she was about to enter. Two years later he divorces, a year after the Bodyguard she gives birth to a little girl (stand corrected with her daughter's birth year) - was this the world she had to share with Kevin maybe, who knows - did he ever share with her that he wanted her in his world, I cannot say - yet to this day he has hidden her in the corner of his heart where in his quiet moments he can reflect on much.

On the flip side of the same coin, she has a glimpse of how a man can disrespect her (the other person), a glimpse of verbal abuse, a glimpse of emotional abuse, a glimpse of being put through every psychological abuse that any human could have experienced. A glimpse of never been told she is beautiful, a glimpse of never been told she is talented etc. she gave love but did not receive love, she gave respect but did not receive respect, she showed her transparent side but did not receive the same, she showed her vulnerability but was never protected from harm. I believe this person only stepped into her life to be a destructive force, to rob her of her God given talent, rob her of her wealth, her looks, her character and all that needed to be stripped from her life, and once the deed was done walk away and leave her to the wolves to complete that which was started.

One coin, yet a glimpse into two different worlds - one man sent to bless her (Kevin), the other enters to be a curse (the other person).

MS. WHITNEY ELIZABETH HOUSTON'S CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Please be advised that I have moved, I received a call from God, the Chief Architect the other day, and He informed me that my new home was complete.

You all knew that I had been working on my new residence, sending up my timber, packing up and getting ready to go. I know that my house needed some finishing touches and that the Chief Carpenter, Jesus Christ had to inspect it and give me the final approval. On Saturday, February 11, 2012 around 3:55pm He let me know that my home was complete and that it was ok to move in. So He told me to go ahead and change my address.

Well, my new home is finished and what a sight it is to behold. It is located on an exclusive estate area behind a beautiful pearly gate. It is just over the other side of serene celestial shore. Of course, you know the streets are paved with gold and every day is Sunday, just like you've been told. Trees with twelve manners of fruit grace my garden here, and I can walk and talk with my Master with not a worry or care.

I lived in a home built by man, for only a short time, but my new home is so much better than any other place I've ever lived. There is peace here, joy, happiness, no pain, no heartaches, no strife or discontentment, only sweet serenity. I can dine at the Master's bountiful table and listen to a Heavenly choir and best of all, my Heavenly Father is here...in all His Glory.

Oh yes, I have my own designer here who has fitted me with my very own white robe and wings. I could go on and on about my new home, but instead, I'm going to pray that you get to move here yourself one day. Before I go, let me give you my new address:

Whitney Elizabeth Houston.

1963 Heavenly Way.

Godstown, Heaven

True. Very true. Although I'm so crestfallen and disappointed that she lost her exquisite, melodious, crystal-clear mezzo-soprano high notes to substance abuse, I still love her as a person. Same goes for everyday people who might disappoint me. Never withdraw the love, even if they let you down.

Beautiful new thread, Erica. Thanks.

It's 'Black music month,' shippers. I've been prowling YouTube watching some of Whitney's old performances and thinking my 'what ifs.' The biggest is: What if Whitney sang opera? I mean her voice was so monumentally beautiful, she could have been a gorgeous peer to Shirley Verrett in Lady Macbeth or Samson and Delilah. And maybe, with the right training, been a respectable understudy to the staggeringly gifted Leontyne Price, whom some opera enthusiasts call the Queen of all sopranos?

(Plus, classical singers seem to reach old age like people should, and die of natural causes, not on the front of tabloids) Ah, well. It's just wishful thinking. It's enough that this tragic love story could be the basis of an opera!

Hmmm...idk if i could picture her singing opera. I would have loved for her and Kevin and Modern West to have done a collaboration...like Nelly and Tim McGraw's 'Over and Over Again.'

I'll have to listen to that cut. All I know is that when I heard her sing "Run to You" and "I Love the Lord," I was really impressed with her breathe management, expression and her tonal control. If you listen to ILTL, especially considering that Richard Smallwood, a classically trained gospel pianist accompanies her, you hear what I think are a couple of classical vocal techniques. They come off in a very grand, majestic way, especially the first six lines. And when she sings "I'll hasten to, to, to and trills about 8 or 9 notes on that last 'to', to my amateur ear that approaches classical territory. Of course, I could be wrong.

Twenty years ago, I didn't even like "Run to You" from TBG. I thought it was too hokey and did nothing for female empowerment. Why would a super successful diva need to run to a man, Kevin or whoever? It was the early 90s. Girl power was in. "I'm Every Woman" was my anthem off that soundtrack, and I had graduated high school, was visiting Europe and thought "Run to You" was cute but dumb. Now, I'm floored by her breathing techniques and expression in that song. The woman had unbelievable skills that only the best pop/R&B/soul singers can even approach today.

She was destined, ultimately, for the career she had. I just think she might have done "The Color Purple," or "Porgy and Bess" or any other grand stage production and had men and women weeping in the aisles. As usual.

If you listen her voice was almost perfect again. During the last weeks she had a throat infection and hoarseness requiring antibiotics. Traveling in and out of climates doesn't help.

That part in ILTL...it was more like a run, like in R.Kelly's 'When a Woman Loves.' Im glad you have a better appreciation for 'Run to You.' Its actually my fav song from TBG followed by 'I Have Nothing' then IWALY and 'Queen of the Night.' Oh and I can see her doing The Color Purple.

She could have nailed any style of singing if she put her heart to it

Hey GobSmacked82,

it is so true that it is only now she has passed that I am discovering or re-discovering many of her songs and seeing what you describe: HER AWESOME TALENT

I think she could have done great in opera by putting her Whitney-touch to it just like she turned that little country song IWALY into something else.

I re-dsicovered one her songs a couple of days agothat I loved when it came out in 1988 "Love Will Save The Day" and the lyrics just made me wonder that if only Whitney had believed in the meaning of the lyrics of her uplifting songs like we did/do, she will probably would have sotpped the spiraling down that occured in the 2000s that kind of led to what ultimately happened

Here is a youtube link of her singing that song : http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?...ture=endscreen

Let me know what you think, my friend. That song is such a great song! And the awe expressed by those who watched the video re: her vocal prowesses!

It's likely that if she became an opera singer she wouldn't have such impact on us I love classical music, but as a young person(ok, very young I mean) I was listening to pop rather than opera.
Here is the link to Whitney singing opera with Pavarotti. I think she did an outstanding job:
Whitney Houston, Pavarotti, Sting, Elton John - La Donna e Mobile 1994 - YouTube

Too bad it's such a bad quality recording. However, I'm grateful to the person who uploaded it on YT.

There was NOTHING our girl could not do! Not a thing. Singing power ballads is one thing, but classical? It takes control, expression and proper breathing. That is why Whitney was always my favorite; she was among the true vocal musical talents, not these AutoTuned pop tarts.

I tell you, the world is really missing something special now. There is a vacuum in the musical world, and we'll have to wait to see what talent the new crop of singers will bring us. She's out there, the next exciting mezzo-soprano. But we have to wait a while, I think. And even when she performs, no one will ever forget the way Whitney Houston made them feel—and continue to feel! Because we have hundreds of inspiring recordings of her.

Thank you for bringing that to video to our attention, Kala79, good find! Just added it to my collection! Whitney was so cute and pleased with herself in that clip, made me smile! Elton and Sting didn't do a bad job either.

Thanks for posting this Kala! Gobsmack, you shut me right up lol! That was awesome! Even Pavarotti was a bit shocked, along with the chick in the back holding flowers. And Whitney, so goofy and carefree. I would have loved to hear her sing or even record an opera song...maybe sumthin like haley westerna.
