Quotes

Kevin on Whitney:

“It's very easy to fall in love with Whitney.”

“I remember looking at Whitney and I said, “Oh man, this girl, really. She just really has it.”
This is not race. This is just about good, old-fashioned chemistry...boy-girl stuff.”

“At her essence, Whitney was a really good person.”

“I promised her two things -- that I would be right there with her, and she would not be bad.”

“Whitney and I had a lot in common.”

“A lot of leading men could have played my part, a lot of guys could have filled that role.
But you Whitney, I truly believe, were the only one who could have played Rachel Marron
at that time.”

“Whitney, if you could hear me now I would tell you, you weren't just good enough,
you were great.” “People didn't just like you, Whitney, they loved you.”

“I urge us all...to dry our tears, suspend our sorrow and perhaps our anger just long enough,
to remember the sweet miracle of Whitney”...“Sing your hearts out,
knowing that there is an angel in Heaven making God Himself wonder
how He made something so perfect.”

“Off you go Whitney, off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your Heavenly Father,
when you sing before Him, don't you worry you'll be good enough.”

“That was big. It was like a...kind of a score to our life together a little bit...
People were suffering, the people closest to her were truly, truly suffering, and that song kind of...
it did kind of bring everything back together, but it was an absolute goodbye.”

“A couple of times over the years I called radio stations that were on her pretty hard,
asking the deejay to look at it in a different light. And at a couple of critical moments in her life,
I was asked by a close friend to write her a letter. And I did. I don’t know if she ever read them.”

“I was writing [my eulogy] on the plane, in the limo, in bed. It was important.
When I first walked into that church, it was electric, man.”

“I started [speaking] with the idea that sometimes
what you think life will be it won't be at all,
and about what was real between Whitney and me,
what we talked about—being in church when we were little,
both getting in trouble, about our not wanting to be preachers...
I wanted to impart a bit of the Whitney that I knew,
and maybe people could think about her in a different way.”

“I think about Whitney a little bit the way I think about the Kennedys.
I know there’s trouble, but I choose to think about a lot of other stuff.
The trouble is as real as the achievement, but it does not tarnish it.”

“You don't do that for everybody. And it was a pretty seminal moment for Whitney.”
“I took Whitney in my arms and kissed her, not as a black woman but as a beautiful woman.
That’s how I saw her.”

“She was a very important person to me and the world has connected us
in a way that we'll never not be.”

Whitney on Kevin:

“It was really nice, really a joy to work with Kevin,
and it had a lot to do with his personality.
He is down-to-earth; he doesn't trip. He's into his work.
And he's very kind, he's effective and he's considerate.”

“That was more exciting for me than the actual idea that he is this hunk
Kevin Costner. Yes, he's a hunk and he's sexy.
We all know that, but that's not what I was looking for.”

“We kind of made a deal. He loves to sing, he loves music.
Okay, Kevin -- I'll help you with your singing if you help me with the acting.”

“He was kind enough, and gracious enough, to ensure that I was comfortable,
being that it was my first film, he understood that, and he knows what it can be like
to be doing your first film so he was really kind and very... very kind!”

“How do I know I can act? I've never done it before!
But Kevin said, “You can do it, I know you can do it, I just know you can.”
I was like, “This man has more faith in me than I have faith in myself.”
Oh, he was a tremendous help...I mean, he made me feel so comfortable about acting,
and he made it look and seem so easy, you know,
and little bits and pieces he gave me helped me so much.
Kevin was so great.”

“What is Kevin Costner really like? Well, I can tell you this - I was blessed.
Kevin cares...Kevin really cares.”

“If I have one friend in Hollywood, it's Kevin.”

H e i g h t: 6' 1" (1.85 m)
O c c u p a t i o n: Actor, director, producer and singer
Kevin was born in Lynwood, California, on January 18, 1955, the third child of Bill Costner, a ditch digger and ultimately an electric line servicer for Southern California Edison, and Sharon Costner. He has 2 older brothers (middle brother died at birth) and was raised Baptist. Costner was not academically inclined. Rather, he enjoyed sports, took piano lessons, wrote poetry and sang in the First Baptist Choir. He has stated that a viewing of the film How the West Was Won at the age of seven had "formed" his childhood. At 18, he built his own canoe and paddled his way down the rivers that Lewis & Clark followed to the Pacific. Despite his present height, he was only 5'2" when he graduated high school. Nonetheless, he still managed to be a basketball, football and baseball star. In 1973, he enrolled at California State University at Fullerton, where he majored in business. (more info here)

Whitney began singing in the choir at her church, The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, as a young child and by the age of 15 was singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khan's 1978 hit, 'I'm Every Woman'. She went on to provide backing vocals for Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson and her own mother and worked briefly as a model, appearing on the cover of 'Seventeen' magazine in 1981.

Her debut album, 'Whitney Houston', was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by a debut artist. Several hit singles, including 'Saving All My Love For You', 'How Will I Know', 'You Give Good Love', and 'The Greatest Love of All', were released from the album, setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US number ones. The album itself sold 3 million copies in its first year in the US and went on to sell 25 million worldwide, winning her the first of her six Grammies. (more info here)

~~~~~
A Glimpse Into Two Worlds: Kevney
written by SaffaGirl
God gave Whitney a glimpse of what her life would be like had she married someone with Kevin's character. He gave her a glimpse of what it would be like to be loved unconditionally, a glimpse of what it is like to be respected by a man, a glimpse of what it is like to be treated like a lady, a glimpse of what it is like to be given compliments, a glimpse of what it is like to be accepted for who you are. I firmly believe that Kevin had discernment when he saw the script of the Bodyguard, and he knew in his heart of hearts that Whitney should be his leading lady, but at the same time he could not understand why. He could have sat on his own, questioning God as to why he had the strong urge to have her act alongside of him - he went against all odds to have her, even decided to wait ONE WHOLE YEAR for her to complete her tour. The glimpse she saw about Kevin she might have never experienced it before with any other man that she might have been in a relationship with, and maybe just maybe she did not know how to embrace such love and respect; recalling she was already in a relationship with the other person. She had a glimpse of what it is like to be transparent with Kevin and to see his transparency as well, a glimpse of showing her vulnerable side yet being told "it is okay".
Kevin was already in a marriage when he strongly wanted her to act with him, she had already entered and seen the glimpse of the world she was about to enter. Two years later he divorces, a year after the Bodyguard she gives birth to a little girl (stand corrected with her daughter's birth year) - was this the world she had to share with Kevin maybe, who knows - did he ever share with her that he wanted her in his world, I cannot say - yet to this day he has hidden her in the corner of his heart where in his quiet moments he can reflect on much.
On the flip side of the same coin, she has a glimpse of how a man can disrespect her (the other person), a glimpse of verbal abuse, a glimpse of emotional abuse, a glimpse of being put through every psychological abuse that any human could have experienced. A glimpse of never been told she is beautiful, a glimpse of never been told she is talented etc. she gave love but did not receive love, she gave respect but did not receive respect, she showed her transparent side but did not receive the same, she showed her vulnerability but was never protected from harm. I believe this person only stepped into her life to be a destructive force, to rob her of her God given talent, rob her of her wealth, her looks, her character and all that needed to be stripped from her life, and once the deed was done walk away and leave her to the wolves to complete that which was started.
One coin, yet a glimpse into two different worlds - one man sent to bless her (Kevin), the other enters to be a curse (the other person).
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
written by Dolly Parton
sung by Whitney Houston
If I should stay,
I would only be in your way
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you ev'ry step of the way
And I will always love you
I will always love you
You, my darling you. Hmm
Bittersweet memories
that is all I'm taking with me
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry
We both know I'm not what you, you need
And I will always love you
I will always love you
(Instrumental solo)
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I wish to you, joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love
And I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I, I will always love you
You, darling, I love you
Ooh, I'll always, I'll always love you
MOON SO HIGH
written by Kevin Costner & Modern West
sung by Kevin Costner & Modern West
Moon’s so high
Nowhere to go but down from here
Here am I wishing that you were near
But it all came crashing down
You were nowhere to be found
Yeah I remember your little girl smile
I guess never had you
Just held you for a little while
Till it all came crashing down
You were nowhere to be found
There’s still pieces all around scattered everywhere
You could break my heart girl a thousand times or more
I’d still come running back to knock upon your door
Don’t get me wrong I really ain’t that mad
You’re just the best thing I’ve ever had
And I remember last November
Yeah I see right to the day
You turned around and walked away
Then it all came crashing down -
You were nowhere to be found
There’s still pieces all around
Pieces of my broken heart
The Moon So High tonight
Nowhere to go but down from here
Well you’d think by now I might’ve learned to say goodbye
But I’ll never say goodbye I’ll never say goodbye
Yay EricaCallie, perfect timing on the new thread, just finished this one shot. I apologize if someone already did this scenario but I couldn't get the bug out of my head all day to write it. Sorry so long again! I had a lot of fun writing this one.
November 18, 1998
Cipriani Wall Street, NYC
Entering the small but lavish dressing room in a rush, Whitney sat down her purse and quickly hung up her garment bag. Walking would have been faster than the rush hour cab she took, and now she only had about 15 minutes before she was due on stage. She threw her shoes off and began peeling off her street clothes, hurrying to put on her gold formal gown. Her stylist rushed in behind her, closing the door quickly, and began fussing with her hair while Whitney was still dressing.
"Just calm down honey, we'll get you ready. If you're two minutes late, they aren't going to leave." She pulled a section of her hair up and began to spray it.
"I know. I just hate being in a hurry." Whitney began humming vocal warm-ups as something caught her eye. A vase of fresh white lilies was sitting on the edge of the counter on the mirrored wall, a small card tucked inside them.
"See baby, they love you already," the stylist pointed out, gesturing toward the flowers. She dumped the contents of a cosmetic bag out onto the counter, rifling through for just the right color of eyeshadow.
No way, Whitney thought. There was only one other time she'd received white lilies, and it had been an amusing mistake six years prior. As she zipped her dress up, she made a mental note to read the card later before someone took the arrangement away. There was no time now; the crowd was waiting.
********************
Other than the stage area, the room was dim, the only light coming from candles on the centerpiece of each table. The flickering light bathed everything in gold, making the whole scene quite beautiful. Every seat was occupied. Whitney could hear the light scraping of forks on plates as she finished her fourth song of the night to refined applause.
"Thank you! Thank you so much for coming. Are you having fun so far?" Whitney beamed, trying to turn on her stage persona. She'd started the night a little nervous from being in such a rush.
The audience mumbled in approval. Whitney noticed Bobby leaning on the stage in a white tux, clapping loudly. She suppressed a sigh, wondering why he couldn't sit down and not beg for attention just this once.
She sang two more songs, taking her cues from the band. She'd come up with the setlist herself, but had promptly forgotten to write it down, so she didn't know what song was next until they started playing it. Being unsure was definitely not helping her nerves, and she found herself taking several deep breaths in between each song, but keeping a smile on her face.
"Let's get the lights brought up just for a minute, I need to see your faces!" Whitney crossed the stage, placing a hand in a salute on her forehead and leaning forward so the crowd would know she was looking at them. The house lights raised, revealing a couple hundred people dressed in their best. "Wow, you all look beautiful!"
She continued scanning the room, stopping her eyes on a table midway back on the right side. Her heart leapt into her throat as she saw a familiar light-haired man in a black tux. She walked in the other direction, not wanting to stare at him, but forced a quick glance back toward the right. She caught his eye this time, and he grinned and wiggled his fingers in a small wave. It was definitely Kevin. They hadn't seen each other in years.
"Okay, umm, well I hope nobody has an early curfew because we're just getting started!" She tried to deliver with humor, and the crowd smiled politely. "Here's an older one, if you know it please sing along!" The band started into 'How Will I Know,' and Whitney sang it on autopilot, her mind drifting to the past.
"Good morning, sunshine," Kevin caught her gaze in the bathroom mirror as he splashed water on his face. "You looked so peaceful, I didn't want to wake you. And now that filming's finished, nobody can hate on us for lying in bed all day."
A vase of white lilies sat on the nightstand on Whitney's side of the hotel bed. Rolling over on her pillow, she smiled sleepily, watching Kevin wrap a white towel around his waist. She noticed the flowers.
"Are these for me?" She reached up to touch a soft petal.
"Oh, crap, no! They are for the other insanely beautiful woman I
finally made love to last night. I'm so sorry for the mixup." He walked over and picked up the vase as though to take it elsewhere, then set it back down.
Whitney slapped him playfully, grinning as he crawled under the covers and kissed her deeply. Her head spun. She reached for the tiny envelope attached to the vase and opened it.
"Dear W, you are amazing," she read aloud. "Congratulations, and thank you for everything. The end of this project can be a new beginning for us. -K" Whitney burst into loud laughter as she finished reading.
"What?" Kevin asked. "God! I can't be serious with you for five seconds!" He tried to play it off, but he did actually sound irritated.
"No! It's beautiful... they're beautiful. It's just --" She began laughing again.
"What?! Tell me!" Kevin pulled away from her.
"White lilies are
sympathy flowers! Please tell me you aren't saying you're sorry for your, uhh, performance last night?" She giggled again. "Because personally I thought it was fantastic."
"Wait -- what... crap." Kevin began laughing himself, pulling her into him. "Leave it to a man to mess up flowers! In fairness, the gift shop didn't have the best selection this morning. It was either these, or wilted sunflowers. That's hilarious though. Now I know."
Whitney laid her head on his chest. "It's okay. I love them. And I love you," she whispered. A few seconds of silence passed.
"Best words I've ever heard." He smiled, stroking her hair softly.
"Whitney?" her drummer hissed, pulling her from her memory. "Song's over. You gotta say something, hun."
Her mind drifted to the flowers in the dressing room. "I, umm, we're gonna take a quick break. Stick around, we'll be back shortly!" She exited the stage in a half-run.
The flowers were exactly where they'd been before the show. She yanked the card up from the arrangement, tearing it open and tossing the envelope in the floor.
Dear W -- Went to four different floral shops before I could find white lilies. Apparently New Yorkers aren't big on sympathy.
The card wasn't signed, but it was pretty obvious to her who'd sent them. She read it a second time and then a third, her hands beginning to shake slightly. She felt something heavier than the paper card slip, and heard it hit the carpet. Squatting down, she picked up a Cipriani key card with a room number scrawled on it in Sharpie.
Whitney jumped as there was a knock on the door and then her manager stuck her head in. "You ready to go?"
"Yep!" Whitney hid the key card behind her back. When she was alone again, she tucked it into her purse out of sight, and headed back toward the stage.
********************
She finished the performance in a slight daze but with no mistakes, trying to emote when necessary. The encore, "I Will Always Love You," had received a standing ovation. She'd completely avoided looking over at Kevin while singing it, but glanced over at him now. He was standing, all huge smiles and applause, and looking right at her. She had to look away as her heart pounded.
It took seemingly forever to pose for the necessary photos and autographs. Whitney was feeling more relaxed now, just trying to take the evening on as it came. Kevin had been in the meet-and-greet line for awhile, but had slipped out when he was about five people back from talking to her. He hadn't returned. She tried not to wonder if he had another commitment, if he had changed his mind about seeing her, or if he'd just gotten tired of waiting and left. Another flashbulb went off and she tried to fake a smile for a few more photos.
"Are you almost done?" Bobby's voice demanded from behind her. She signed two more autographs without even looking back at him, surprised he wasn't sitting at the press table with her, poking his head into all of the photos.
"Almost, but Clive wants me to go to dinner with him alone after this. Business meeting." The lie had slipped out so effortlessly, as many just like it had at a different time in her life. She heard Bobby exit in a huff.
Twenty or so minutes later, she was finally finished, and gathered her clothes and bag from the dressing room. Still in her stage dress, she marched to the elevator and took it up to Kevin's floor. Pausing in the hallway, she had to gather her nerve. "You can do this," she whispered to herself. "It will be nice to see an old friend."
She took a few more steps down the plush carpet and tapped lightly on his door. Whitney could hear her heart roaring in her ears, and nobody was coming to the door. She knocked again, slightly louder this time. Still nothing.
Reaching into her purse, she removed the key card and quietly slipped it into the slot. She waited for the green light, took a quick glance down the hall to make sure nobody was around, and quickly went into the room, pulling the door closed behind her.
Kevin was sitting on the bed, drinking champagne straight from the bottle. His bow tie hung loose around his neck.
"Hey," Whitney said softly. "You didn't answer the door."
"I know. You have a key. Plus I needed to see if this was a pity visit or if you really wanted to see me." He set the bottle down on the floor, standing up and walking toward her, smiling. His dimples looked just as she remembered them.
"Of course I want to see you."
They hugged. It was a little awkward at first, but he held her tightly for a long time and she felt herself relax a little. Finally, they pulled apart, but held hands.
"It's been a long time," Whitney smiled.
"Six and a half years," Kevin replied. "But who's counting, right?" He let go of her hands, his face falling a little bit. He turned away from her, sitting back down on the bed.
"I'm really sorry I haven't been in touch." Whitney felt a pang of regret, watching as Kevin picked up the bottle and took a big swig of champagne. Over the years, she had often thought about what it would have been like if they'd become a couple. She thought about it especially hard after fights with Bobby.
"It's okay. I'm not mad, Whit. I understand. I've been busy too, and after awhile it just felt..."
"Weird?" She finished his sentence, walking forward to sit down with him on the bed.
"Yeah." He whispered. "Exactly. Want a drink?" He offered the bottle to her. She grinned, tilting it back and letting the fizzy liquid pour down her throat. She coughed a little and smiled.
"It really is great to see you, though." She looked right into his eyes, ignoring the tug at her heart. "And I loved the lilies. I can't believe you remembered."
He smiled in response. "I'll never forget that. I couldn't possibly."
"So," Whitney continued, not wanting there to be awkward silence. "I'm a momma now. She's almost six. I can't believe it." She smiled.
"I heard." He didn't meet her gaze. "And I'm a bachelor again."
"Yeah, I know," she replied softly. They could hear the TV from the next room blaring. "I was going to call you when I heard, but..." she trailed off.
"Yeah." A pause. "You know, Whitney, if we could just line these things up." he grinned, looking into her dark eyes. "I mean, you really never should have gotten pregnant without consulting me. I can't believe you were still sleeping with your husband." He laid a hand on her shoulder playfully, smiling.
She grinned. "I know, right? And even after all these years, he has no idea I'm still in love with a big famous movie star."
Her words hung thickly between them in the air, until Whitney felt the need to break the silence again. "By the way, I know everyone else hated Waterworld, but I thought it was --"
"Shh," Kevin interrupted softly. "Stop talking." He pulled her face in toward his, kissing her; a soft kiss that they both got lost in for a long time. When they finally stopped, they both felt much more relaxed.
"I missed you, Whitney." She could feel his breath on her lips, and she longed for another kiss, but instead slid away from him, suddenly scared to death of the heartbreak she'd feel if this fell through yet again.
"I should go, I told Bobby that --"
"Please don't." His expression was pleading.
"But, I... Kevin, I have a daughter with him now. I can't do that to her. She needs her father." Whitney stood up.
"I'm not arguing with that logic. I agree with you."
Whitney was perplexed. "So, wait. You're not trying to get me to leave him? The showing up out of nowhere, the lilies, the room key...?" She looked at him, her face questioning.
"I mean, ideally, yes." He laughed. "But you can't, and I knew that going into this. I still know it now. But if I can't have you for forever," he whispered, "then I at least want you for tonight."
She smiled, sitting back down on the bed, picking the champagne back up. "Well in that case, tonight... tonight I can do." The look that passed between them was smoldering.
He reached up to touch her cheek, then walked slowly toward the window to close the curtains.
This was so nicely done. The mark of good writing is when the reader is left with an image, a scene, a moment, and you've done all that. Let's see ... I'll never see white lilies in the same light, and the image of Kevin sitting on the bed, tie undone and swigging from a bottle of champagne? Very nice touch. Thanks!
Ummm, according to this article Kevin Costner once had a yellow lab named Wyatt. As in Cayden Wyatt, his third son and first child with CB. And Wyatt Earp, the character he played in an excellent western? I'm not trying to knock the boy OK, because it's not his fault his parents are weird. But his father should have used better judgment about the name he picked for his child! Why'd he have to go and give the child the same name as a family pet that he had at least 13 years ago, and which was presumably dead when the boy was born?
I'm not saying the child was named after the pet, but the coincidence is just too weird. And if that were my husband, I'd pitch a mnedda fit if he even thought to put a dead family pet's name on my baby! Child REST! I don't care how rich and handsome he is. There is something called good taste when it comes to naming your kids. What is the matter with Christine???? Please someone help this woman pick her face up off da flo'!!
And BTW, I just got back from seeing 'Sparkle.' It was cute and entertaining and delivered on the fashions. But I have to say that Carmen Ejogo took the focus of this film away from Jordin Sparks in almost the way Jennifer Hudson stole "Dreamgirls" right out from under Beyonce. In other ways, I expected more, but I did shed a few tears seeing Whitney sing on the big screen. Until this movie, I had never seen Whitney's movies in theaters, due to timing and other circumstances.
They did downplay Whitney's beauty in that movie, but she can still command a camera when she walks into a shot, let me tell you!
There is something called good taste when it comes to naming your kids. What is the matter with Christine???? Please someone help this woman pick her face up off da flo'!!
And BTW, I just got back from seeing 'Sparkle.' It was cute and entertaining and delivered on the fashions. But I have to say that Carmen Ejogo took the focus of this film away from Jordin Sparks in almost the way Jennifer Hudson stole "Dreamgirls" right out from under Beyonce. In other ways, I expected more, but I did shed a few tears seeing Whitney sing on the big screen. Until this movie, I had never seen Whitney's movies in theaters, due to timing and other circumstances.
They did downplay Whitney's beauty in that movie, but she can still command a camera when she walks into a shot, let me tell you!
Oh Gawd! Naming your own kid w/the same name you gave your dog? Yeah, that's a bit tacky. I'm sure he loves all of his kids, but maybe it was subconscious on his part, GS. I know you know what I mean. There is a certain contempt it seems coming from him--a lack of respect towards her imo--I mean the constant cheating before they were married, the tiny engagement ring, the look on his face on their wedding day, his behavior on their honeymoon. Just seems to me that it is his true feelings surfacing. As far as what is wrong with CB--she's either profoundly stupid (a good possibility) or willing to put up with anything to keep herself in the periphery of the spotlight. It really isn't good for either of them. As far as I'm concerned the forced-marriage of his (forced on him by her) was a contributing factor in Whitney dying an early death because it made him unavailable to her--he couldn't fully participate in saving her from herself because he was tied-down to the dimwit and the new family she forced upon him.
I can't see Sparkle. I just can't. I can't even watch the commercials. Although I love the movie, I can't even watch the Bodyguard now. It is too upsetting. I couldn't get into 'Message in a Bottle'. The only movies of his I like are TBG and TinCup. And you know, there was nothing between him and Rene Russo in that picture. The smiling eyes were just not there. But even though he tried so hard to act like the tough-guy in TBG, his eyes twinkled whenever he looked at Whitney. You could tell he just melted.
I totally get what you're saying. I think there is kind of a "desensitization" process.
I had a really bad breakup in my younger years. The guy and I had an album that was kind of "our" album, and I'd grown to love it as a piece of music, apart from what it meant in our relationship. Right after the breakup I couldn't bring myself to listen to it. But I didn't want to "lose" it forever, if that makes any sense. So I inundated myself with it; listened to it every day for a pretty long time. After awhile it lost meaning having to do with the guy, and remains one of my favorite albums.
It isn't the same when death is involved, but I've kind of taken the same route with Whitney's work. I didn't -- couldn't -- listen to it for a couple of months after she passed. But I realized I didn't want to lose it forever, so I've been listening to quite a bit of it since June or so. It doesn't make me as nearly sad as it once did, which I'm glad for. Her music has always been a big part of my life. And I'm also starting to get into the albums from MYIYL on, which I'll admit I didn't give them a fair chance until recently.
Hoping to catch TBG one of the like, 7 times it's on TV next week, lol. I own it but I tend to not watch it very often and NEVER watch it with my hubby because I stare at the screen at Kevney with way too much intensity. LOL. I've never watched it with him.. I'm sure he'd sit there like ????? Plus I'd get mad if he tried to talk to me during it.
Another Article about KC's Career Turnaround
This one clearly links his reversal in fortunes to Whitney's funeral:
A Study in the Second Act: Kevin Costner
He was one of the biggest stars on the planet in the 1990s, not only bankable as an actor but as a director, too, courtesy the success of Dances with Wolves. Through 1994, Kevin Costner was king.
But then came Waterworld—at the time, the most expensive movie ever made—which was disastrously bad and while it has ultimately made money, it was labelled a “bomb” because of its poor domestic box office. Then two years later, Costner took an even bigger hit with The Postman, which is still ranked as one of the biggest flops of all time. And though Costner worked steadily in the ensuing years, all the heat disappeared and he went from Movie Star to punch line
(a meeting at work recently concluded with me saying, “The Postman: the movie that ruined Kevin Costner’s career”).
So why are we talking about Kevin Costner? Because all of a sudden he’s one of the hottest actors out there, coming off a huge mini-series and signing multi-picture studio deals to front major tent pole properties.
Lainey asked me to assess Costner and his resurgence (am I a guest lecturer in the Faculty of Celebrity Studies?), and what I found as I poked at the rock Costner’s been hiding under for seventeen years is that Costner is not alone, that the Movie Stars of the 90s, most of whom have seen their prestige wane if not disappear altogether, are recalibrating for the new, post-Movie Star reality. Kevin Costner’s second act is the Movie Star’s second act.
Costner has actually been working regularly, it just hasn’t been particularly relevant or distinguished. Fans of Westerns might single out Open Range (which he directed and managed not to set a pile of money on fire, thanks entirely to a sub-$25 million budget), and documentary fans will point to his participation in the top-notch Tom Petty doc, Runnin’ Down a Dream. But those are rare bright spots in a time when he attempted to foist Dane Cook, Serious Actor on us (the hellacious Mr. Brooks) and participated in the classic “don’t do this” school of filmmaking gem, 3000 Miles to Graceland. The most relevant public moment for Costner in the last decade-plus was his effort to help with the BP oil spill cleanup.
At least until he appeared at Whitney Houston’s funeral,
which…yeah, it’s gross but such events, with celebrities, there’s always another angle. No matter how sincere the grief, there is always another angle. Remember Princess Diana’s funeral? I’m not cheapening Costner’s real friendship with Houston but…her big moment was his, too. They’re inextricably linked in our minds. Her voice, THAT SONG, and we think of him. It was a, “Oh hey, yeah, Kevin Costner” moment, at her funeral. It was a reminder of the place he once held though his Movie Star days were over.
And they still are, simply because the Movie Star is dead. But Costner is catching a wave that is still building, a trend that is still sinking into the cultural psyche—he’s re-emerging not as Kevin Costner, Movie Star, but as Kevin Costner, Portrayer of Memorable Characters. This is the way forward for actors in a star-less world. Their names will, for 99% of them, not be enough to guarantee audience returns. But the right actor playing the right character? We’re already seeing the fruit of this new branding in which celebrity and character persona merge from RDJ as Tony Stark to Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. These days, I don’t think a true star can break through unless it’s on the back of a signature character.
This is the strategy Costner is deploying. He came back strong this summer with the History Channel’s record setting mini-series Hatfields & McCoys, which is nominated for 22 Emmys, including a Leading Actor nod for Costner. Next he’ll be seen as Superman’s Earth-dad in Man of Steel—he narrates one of the trailers—but it’s the deal he’s working out with Paramount that marks his return to bankable status. Paramount is negotiating for him to play William Harper, who will make his first appearance in the Chris Pine-fronted Jack Ryan reboot, and will provide continuity for the proposed spin-off, Without Remorse, with all of it potentially culminating in a movie centered on his character. It’s a deal similar to Samuel L. Jackson’s gig with Marvel, but the implication is that Costner’s deal will be more lucrative than the cheapsies deals Marvel strikes (whatever, that’s good business sense on Marvel’s part).
It’s a promising future, a chance to reestablish himself as a premiere actor with a multi-picture deal under a major studio that includes a starring vehicle. But it depends more on the character than Costner. Paramount isn’t signing Kevin Costner to make Kevin Costner movies. They’re signing Kevin Costner to make “William Harper” movies. This is the future. This is the Movie Star’s second act. It’s not about the star anymore. Now it’s about the Celebrity Character.
So I guess this Sarah (the poster) is trying to insinuate that there was an ulterior motive to KC's involvement with Whitney's funeral. Yes, he has gotten attention because of it. The miniseries was filmed way before the funeral so that attention would have occurred regardless, if perhaps not quite as much. But I would like to suggest that KC's eulogy could have worked to his detriment if it was in actuality a ploy. The are still plenty of people in this country, at all levels, that have a problem when it comes to race and any type of interracial relationship. Kevin speaking so lovingly and supportively of Whitney could have (and still may have) caused a backlash against him in some areas. I am offended by that insinuation.
