You make some good points but the comparison is different gay or staight if you fall in love with someone that you know is going to cause conflict either from your family or society( ie dateing some one of different relgion/ race whatever) and its your first real love at a young age when you still trying to find your own place to fit in and be excepted. You are going to deny for awhile
since you just want to fit in and not stand out

Well, more in defence of Jenny ... Getting involved with drugs in a young age is a HUGE thing, I'm sure ... And I reckon from her reaction to brush it off immediately whenever someone, especially Emma, want to talk about it, means that it must have been REALLY, REALLY bad ....

So, we'll see ... Does Jenny's reason is indeed makes sense, or not ...

( I really need to stop defending Jenny .... People might think that I'm a Jenny fan now .... )
