She is speaking with Bash, but her thoughts during this moment are on Francis. Just as her thoughts were on Francis when she kissed Bash in “A Chill in the Air” (1x05). In fact, starting with their very first conversation—during which an upset Mary called Francis an ‘ass’—nearly every interaction between Mary and Bash has occurred during a moment when she was in a heightened state of emotion due to Francis.

We are continually told of this uncontrollable attraction between Bash and Mary, and I. just. don’t. SEE. IT. And I’m trying to—not because I ship them, but because I see that there are so many people who do. Am I missing something? Okay, yes, they kiss at the end of 1x05. Then Mary spends the entirety of 1x06 trying to make things right with Francis. At the beginning of 1x07, she stands on the balcony with Catherine as they watch the army depart the castle to subdue some minor skirmish. Noticing that Bash is not leading the column of soldiers alongside his father (he’s the favorite, after all), Mary remarks, “I don’t see Bash.” After that, there’s nothing else until she and her ladies discuss the prophecies in “Fated” and Mary points out that, for Tomas, the true battle occurred in the forest, where he was killed by Francis. Her statement then hangs in the air for a beat before she hesitantly adds, “And Bash.”

So…yeah.

Mary voluntarily brings up his name. Twice. I guess that’s a big deal, right? I mean, I know she seemed pretty ecstatic when she accepted Francis’s proposal, and losing her virginity to him was probably, like, sort of meaningful and all…but to bring up Bash two separate times? Maybe the Mash/Mabastian shippers are onto something. If she had mentioned him only once, you could dismiss it. But twice? Wow. And let’s not forget the pure, sweet love Bash feels for her. They’ve had, what, four or five conversations now? Pretty solid foundation. Plus, he’s never a big meanie like Francis, who has the unmitigated gall to actually argue with her sometimes. The nerve of that *******. And don’t even get me started on the way Francis holds her accountable for her actions. So what if they will someday rule two countries together? That’s no excuse for not thinking every impulsive or ill-timed decision she makes isn’t, like, totes adorable. No. I see it now. Partnership? Getting to know someone? Knowing your beloved isn’t perfect, being unafraid to tell them so, and loving them anyway? That’s all bull****. Lusting after someone you don’t really know, convincing yourself it’s really a deep, mystical connection, and coveting thy neighbor’s wife—that’s what True Love is all about.
