If you remember any of Josh Schwartz's interviews back then, the direction they went in was not shocking. They were just doing anything and everything to make Marissa seem like the show's ultimate screw-up character who was destined to have a tragic ending.
If they did that to a female lead in show nowadays, the show would probably be cancelled.  __________________
