They killed Doyle because it was decided from the outset of Angel that Cordelia would need a genuine purpose to be on the show, and Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt came up with the Doyle character who would get Angel on his path and then pass his ability to Cordelia.

But, yeah, I wish he could have stayed. It was such a sad moment when Cordelia re-watched his tape in the 100th episode, saying he was the "first soldier down" and that even though "Doyle pissed [her] off so righteously going out like that...he knew, he knew what he had to do. He didn't compromise."

yeah i'm glad she watched the tape & that doyle wasn't forgotten

i know that doyle was never meant to hang around for long, bc they wanted wesley to be the third main character, but doyle did make an impression when he was there

Totally. I remember the night Hero first aired and my cousin called me, crying, "Doyle's dead! They killed Doyle! WAHHHHHHHHH!" and I didn't know what the hell she was rambling about. (I hadn't had the chance to watch Angel at this point). But when I did see Doyle's episodes, I understood why she was so sad. He may have only appeared in 9 episodes, but his death was one of the saddest moments in the Buffyverse.

i cried

i was really upset when he died bc i just adored him so much, & i had no idea it was coming - most of the time you can tell when something like that will happen in the promo, but i was just in shock when he died

I was sad too. I was even sadder when I heard that the actor who played Doyle passed away. Then I knew there wouldn't be a chance for Doyle to reappear.

yeah, i would have liked it if her was the one who cordy was cordy's guid in 'birthday' but at least he was mentioned.

& if they knew back then they were going to make cordy evil, then i'm glad he wasn't a part of it
