I think it was the final proof that the writers no longer took the show seriously They assumed that the audience was mostly rooting for R/R so we wouldn't care what they did with Joey in the aftermath The episode where he --couldn't speak French-- was so insulting that I wasn't even compelled to keep watching. I only did so out of mere curiosity at that point.

Rachel and Joey's relationship would have changed the direction the short lived spinoff series, Joey. The show would instead have been centered around the pair's budding relationship and, perhaps, their wedded bliss somewhere down the line.

I agree and I agree with all that was said. You have been quite busy while I was at work today.

I also think they needed to give Joey and Phoebe something to do in the finale. When you think about it, even without our bias against RR, it wasn't a very good finale. If it were not for Monica and Chandler, and their babies, I don't think I would ever rewatch it. Joey and Chandler did have a couple good scenes but like you said, the writing was sub par, sad. Also, was there any doubt that Rachel was going to get off the plane and Ross and Rachel would reunite? So the stakes were not very high.

Yeah, I feel like the writers didn't do all the characters justice at all in the finale - especially Phoebe & Joey

Love thinking about how it would have been if Joey & Rachel had stayed together, & it would have been awesome if they had got the spinoff
