The couples were just right.
Episodes like that does make one wonder though, was J/R a pairing always on the writers mind.

I think Rachel/Chandler probably was...

They've said that people asked if that AU ep was them priming to put J/R together, but that they had no idea at the time

They probably considered a lot of couple combinations, they've talked about Joey/Phoebe a bit & it's not like they gave Monica/Chandler a huge amount of foreshadowing, so judging by those standards you could look at a lot of the friendships & wonder if the writers were considering turning it into more.

I think they were toying with the idea of J/R, which is why that AU episode was written. They were originally going to have Chandler with Phoebe, but then in season three they experimented with Rachel/Chandler. Not too many people were impressed by that. But I'm definitely curious as to what the reaction would have been if the AU episode was done in season three, either right before or right after Ross cheated on Rachel.
