Well, Joey had always had a thing for Dawson. She was the quintessential BFF that fell for her BFF. She was kinda like Vanessa. I remember the fan reactions back then - in so many ways Joey gets the same flack as Vanessa does now at certain times. I think because there were only 2 main girls on the cast, there really wasn't much choice in the 1st season. I think this was the reason that Jack and Andie were introduced in season 2, with Andie essentially playing the blonde Joey. I think it was the first time that the writers in a teen show were playing up the soulmates angle so much, they had a hard time writing Joey and Dawson's story they decided that the only legitimate foil they can put in that was to make Pacey the other guy. The thing was, they ended up writing Pacey and Joey so well, and Josh and Katie acted their parts so well, that they just stole the show. I'm seeing the exact same dynamic here - except a bit on Penn's side though. I'm not as thrilled with his acting choices because he keeps coming off as creepy when clearly he's not supposed to be.
The thing is, in terms of characterization I see more similarity with Pacey-Dan than Seth-Dan. Pacey has this white knight in shining armor complex which Dan also has. Pacey is the outsider in their little world (their world being one of ambition and opportunity), though he clearly is not intellectually stunted because his dialogue is often-times sharper, more insightful and more dry than Dawson's. The fact that he had that trader job angle in season 6 spoke of the fact that he did have intellect, he just had low self esteem. Seth works the adorkable angle, which Dan clearly is not. Both Dan and Pacey work this undeniable sex appeal (let us not forget that Dan was chased around during the summer of prior to season 2 and theater girls show him their goodies, while Pacey did the whole Nate-older women thing). And both Dan and Pacey fell for teachers - Pacey even lost his virginity to Tamara. Finally, both Joey and Blair are hung up on their "soulmates". I predict (fine I KNOW) that the writers will keep writing Blair as forever concerned about Chuck's welfare, and I truly believe they will bring DAir to the relationship level, but Blair will still keep harping on about Chuck. God, I remember the fan reactions to Joey - the almost hatred meted out to her because she wouldn't admit to Dawson that she finally lost her virginity to Pacey. They've been matching the Joey/Pacey story arc milestone by milestone so far. __________________
