Aaron looking crushed while watching Jenna flirting with her former English teacher, Mr. McManus.] Sam: Ah, come on, you know how Jen is. Aaron: That’s the problem, I’m a sucker for perfection. Carla: I mean, come on, every guy I know is hot for you. Jenna: Right. Name one. Carla: I could start with twenty. Jenna: Okay, start with one. Carla: Well…Aaron. [Aaron and Jenna at Craig’s party.] Aaron: I mean, if-if you can’t visit in September then um, oh, okay, how’s this, parent’s weekend, third week October it would just be us. Jenna: What about your parents? Aaron: Ah, I’d tell them it got cancelled, they’d never know. [Jenna spots Mr. McManus.] Jenna: Yeah, uh, could-could you hold this for me? Aaron: Yeah, sure. Jenna: Great, how do I look? Aaron: Um, fantastic. Jenna: Thanks. [Jenna grabs her coat to leave.] Aaron: Wait, what are you doing you’re leaving? Wait, with him? Jenna: Stop following me, Aaron. Aaron: Wha-wha-what are you going to do, go-go back to his swinging bachelor pad that he pays for with the eighteen grand he makes a year to compensate for the fact that no one wants to publish his crap-ass novel? [Jenna pushes him out of the way.] Jenna: Get away from me. Aaron: You’re gonna sleep with him, aren’t you? [Jenna turns around.] Aaron: Because that’s-that’s what you do, isn’t it? You sleep with guys who don’t give a damn for you. Well, let me ask you something, are-are you going to believe him when he tells you that he loves you? Because he doesn’t love you, Jenna, he does not love you, Jenna. Jenna: At least I’ve been laid. [Aaron looks taken aback.] Jenna: I’m not some virgin who’s angry at the world because he can’t convince any girl in town to sleep with him. [Jenna leaves.] Aaron: Not any girl, Jenna…not any girl. [Jenna coming to Aaron’s house.] Aaron: By all means, let yourself in. Jenna: You’ve been avoiding me. Aaron: No, I’ve just been uh, busy. Jenna: You’re parents home? Aaron: No at work, but I’d be happy to tell them you stopped by. Jenna: Boy, I wonder if your mother knows what a wise-ass you are! [Jenna throws her shoes at him, then goes to get a drink.] Aaron: Don’t know, wonder if yours knows what pain in the ass she gave birth to. Jenna: No. She had other things on her mind back then, like trying to get the number of spec fathers down to double digits. Aaron: Look, about the other night… Jenna: Don’t. [She joins him on the couch.] Jenna: You were right, he didn’t love me. I’m not even sure if he really liked me. Aaron: But you slept with him. Jenna: Boy, you have some high opinion of me. Aaron: No, I… Jenna: No, I didn’t sleep with him. I had this surge of self-esteem or I put a call into Ripley’s. Aaron: I-I-I knew he didn’t love you. Jenna: Oh, Aaron… Aaron: No listen, let me finish. I knew he didn’t love you, because I know what it looks like when a guy loves you. Jenna, I see it in my mirror everyday. [She starts kissing his hands, and forehead…] Aaron: I’m not sure how to do this. Jenna: You’re doing fine. [He kisses her.] [Aaron seeing Jenna off at the bus station, while Carla’s telling what happened.] Carla: Aaron got what he wanted, and lost it again all in the same summer. And Jenna left knowing that “I love you” could be spoken after sex as well. Though, perhaps she wasn’t quite ready to hear it.
