I think that if Ted had been more focused and had more self control at that point in his life he wouldn't have noticed the email or stopped at that motel in the first place. It's just that he was so lost and confused that he couldn't take a hold on his life and go to soend time in the country as he (and Emmett ) had originally planned.

and he felt he's losing control over his life
In fact things were getting worst for him after Brian convinced Stockwell not to bring Ted to trial. It was supposed to be a less stressful time for him after that but things were not going that way. __________________

I remember reading that in S1 the writers were not sure if Ted's character would stay in the show after he took drags in 103 but in S3 Ted was so much a part of the show that writers knew they were not going to 'kill' him
