Melanie and Lindsay were doing doing very well in raising him, but Brian was a father that wanted to be there. He isn't one of those flaky parents who only show up every once and while, he wanted to be there witnessing all of Gus' moments. But he also was also trying to avoid stepping on Melanie's toes. We know how fierce she gets when she feels slighted.
