This is the season of Ben's arrival it was a very good choice to cast him and make him part of the show.

Would you trade David and Ben? I mean, would you prefer David had stayed and become Michael's partners for the rest of the show and Ben had never appeared?

Yes.

Well, that sounds harsh, it's not that I dislike Ben, he's a good guy.
But yes, I would've prefered David to stay. For me David/Michael were far more interesting (but that is also about the writers who didn't really use the HIV for a good and longterm storyline IMO). Ben was boring and all his made up dramas weren't really entertaining for me. Sorry, I have to say that.

David was far away from being a perfect person (or even partner), but they had more potential to work things out, and I also like the chemistry between Hal and Chris way more and there was also the tension between David and Brian. There was just more potential. I would've loved to see them becoming equal partners, helping each other, making up, fighting, trying, failing and in the end... getting married.

Of course with David there wouldn't have been the Hunter arc. I mean, I can't imagine David running after a lippy hustler.

But, well, sorry, YES, I prefered David.

I think both characters have their pros and cons. Overall I liked Ben, even though I agree he was a bit boring sometimes. Or better yet, the relationship between him and Michael became boring at times.
David definitely seemed to have another charisma and to stir things up in a way Ben didn't. But who knows if things would have stayed that way after the first season. The thing with Brian could last only so much.
Anyway, overall I take Ben over David mostly because of how Michael was with him. I didn't like him when he was with David.

And I liked David more than Ben because even Michael wasn't as boring as he later was with Ben - AND... I liked the love/sex-scenes between D/M better. They looked more comfortable to me.

I confess I didn't like any of Michael's sex scenes. They all felt awkward to me, unfortunately, so I think it was a Hal thing more than a Michael thing.

I think Michael was kind of boring with David too. He was often whining about things and the fact David paid for everything and the fact they were different etc..

my answer would be definitely not! I was glad when Michael got out of that not very healty relationship with David ,even though it must have hurt him a bit, because he was trying to stick to the "perfect relationship" dream for a while.

I loved everything about Ben. I can't understand why people label him as boring. I really liked his dynamics with Michael right from the start,and the way Michael took the decision to be with Ben despite him being positive.

I can't say I liked their sex scene (because I didn't ) but other than that I liked them much better than D/M (in fact I didn't like D/M sex scenes either )

Yeah, as far as the sex went, I don't like either couple, something is missing in both.
I like Ben more than David overall. And I think he was a very good influence on Michael.

It's just that David was more interesting as a character for me.
And Michael was still whining ... and David was by far NOT his unhealthiest relationship...

Michael was able to be himself with Ben. I guess you could say Ben gave him his space. plus it was much more two way street relationship with Ben , not just "david's this and David's that".

and I really like it when Michael was able to admit he finds chaos in serenity

I think both Ben and David had charisma and were interesting but I think Michael found himself better with Ben because with him he didn't feel like he had to change. I'm not saying David asked him to change because he didn't. But Michael always felt kind of a loser with him, never appropriate. With Ben he didn't feel like that, he could be himself without fearing to be not enough.

I tolerated Michael way more with Ben so just for that I like Ben plus he was more understanding of Michael's feelings for Brian, he didn't try to push Michael away from Brian.
