I think the promise is a bit of hyperbole. But it continues to make the point that in thee early 2000s at least, there was a strong fear of HIV infection.

I think that dynamic has changed however.

I just don't get why Dave was so surprised that Michale was excited to unpack his things and enjoyed moving in.. it was like .. Its ok to have you here,, but please don't unpck

Just proves instantly that he didn't really want him to integrate with his life. He only wanted the "trophy wife" and it's like a shock to him that he couldn't have that - that Michael came with (literal) stuff and a life of his own.
