Gay Culture Thread #5: Shame on you. Marriage should be about love only!

I'm sorry, but I think it's extremely sad and really shameful to see this happening one day after such historical elections.

California voters approve gay-marriage ban - Yahoo! News

If you guys don't agree with the title, please tell me.

The title is pure truth.

the title is perfect, it just speaks the truth.

that's really a shame, I can't believe in 2008 we're still at this point.

I will never understand how someone can take it upon themselves to decide who can get married and who can't. And even worse, they decide someone can't get married because in a relationship with a person of the same sex.

and I agree it's even sadder this is happening just after there's been such an historical event as the election of the first black USA president. It seems like we take one step forward and one backward. And in 2008 there are still people who have to fight to see their basic rights recognized.

It's really upsetting. Probably because I have gay friends and overall most of people I know in RL are considered liberal. And my online friends think like me and then bam, I'm confronted with sad reality this way. Because the truth is that here, in virtual world, we're mostly sheltered from such things - liberalism being more common to the Internet users than conservatism.

I don't have any gay friend, that I know of at least, but this still upsets me very much. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, because I can see how much certain people still have a problem with love between same sex people even in my own family, who is usually very liberal. But I can't help but feeling surprised and ashamed when I'm confronted with the reality that certain people still see love between gay as something wrong and not natural and to fight against. It just seem so ridicolous to me to think like that.

and all the talk about allowing gays to get married would ruin "family" just makes me want to break something. I think heterosexuals have done a great job in ruining enough families. When people will understand that love and family nothing have to do with the sex orientation of people involved, it will be a great day.

it's truly sad that we take this huge step forward but when it comes to gay marriages we are still so behind

I don't have any gay friends either but this really is a shame. I think you picked the perfect title, Do. Marriage should be about love only. We're all human beings for Christ's sake. It's utterly frustrating that so many bigoted heterosexuals have the power to take gay people's rights away because they're scared or ignorant or silly or who-knows-what and all in the name of the 'Oh-so-holy-family' while they obviously have no idea what family really is about. They are the ones who should have their rights stripped away until they learn something about tolerance and acceptance.

Tell me about it. My own parents who raised me to be tolerant and liberal, have so many silly prejudices, I feel ashamed for them. My mother's favorite argument - It's not natural. Lovely. Well, since we all are a product of nature I wonder how it could be not natural. This is something she always fails to explain *shakes head*

I wish people wouldn't waste their time and energy on making the lives of gays and lesbians miserable and concentrate on important things like stopping wars, taking care of the financial crisis, feeding starving people, finding a cure for deathly diseases. I wonder why treating others badly makes some people feel good. That is sick.

This is so sad. I still don't understand why politics have to play a role in something that has to do with love and only love (as it was perfectly put in the title).

My father's favourite sentence: I respect them, they can do what they want, but not in front of my eyes. WTF? it always makes me want to pull my hair. What respect is that? My sister looks at me like I'm sick each time I mention QAF or she sees my BJ wallpapers. And I feel sad because if not even young people like her can be open minded, then the situation is really not pretty.

this is so sad. I really believe in marriage, it's something I've always believed in and I hope to have one day. So I really can't imagine how terrible it might be to want to get married, to be committed like that to the person you love, and being told you can't because your love is wrong/not natural/is not real love.

i don't believe in marriage at all, but till the day i die i will always respect others who want to enter into the sanctity of it... it's human equality, the end... but the sad part is, is that people who view the ban as a good thing don't even look at the numbers... they just think everyone refutes gay marriage when NO!... there is only a 500,000 difference between yes and no... that number is astounding to me... out of ten million people only half a million voted the other way... surely there isn't even a fraction of gay people to support the bill in california... therefore there is a shift in society where more people are accepting of gay marriage and support them... i hope one day all people can be treated equally... it stretches beyond race, religion, whatever... and to me the numbers prove that the time will come... it's just sad that life is short and the wait might be too long for some... my heart breaks for people who aren't respected like they should be... how can love be wrong? i'll never get it, ever

I'm one of those ppl that don't want to get married either, never thought about it really. But i think it's wrong that some laws telling ppl that want to get married telling them they can't.

I don't want to get married either, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't support equality. If someone wants to get married, they should. I just don't understand what is so wrong about it.

I'm so sick and tired of dragging religions, politics and pure human ignorance into this. Humans are the most disgusting creatures on this planet. We're the ones destroying each other for fun, we're the ones twisting ideals and moral codes to justify killing/harming other human beings, we're the ones taking pleasure in others' misery and suffering. So yeah, big defenders of traditional values, tell me again what is natural and what is not
