I agree Steffi. Idk if It would have been enough for Brian just to be good friends with Justin. He wanted more but as you pointed out hd didn't exactly know how to deal with it because for a long time he convinced himself he doesn't do boyfriends and all that because he didn't want to get hurt but the thing he was afraid of eventually happened. I think though that he wasn't totally numb because during the break up we see him around Justin almost all the time.

I think Brian wanted to maintain a connection between Justin and himself because he had gotten used to having Justin around.

That's definitelly a valid reason Plus as the saying goes you only get to appreciate a certain thing when it's taken away from you...
I think once Brian realized Justin was gone he noticed how much he missed him esp since during most of S2 there bond bewtween them got stronger and he was falling for him even deeeper

This is actually the reason I always find it difficult to blame Brian for everything that happened before the break up. He had made more than a few mistakes, for sure but I think most of all it was because he couldn't express his true emotions. If you look at his face when he tells Justin 'It's your call' you can tell he's suffering just as much as Justin

That's what makes it so frustrating. We know he doesn't want Justin to go, that he wants him to stay, but his fears and I think also his stupid beliefs, make him tell Justin it's just his choice.
