I wasn't in the fandom yet in 2007 so I don't know. Maybe Claudia or Kate can tell us about it.

Honestly, could it be any other way? I mean, I haven't seen any other gay couple that can even go closer to how amazing BJ were. Personally, no straight couple either.

They had a very strong impact on me and I guess on most of the people that watched the show.

true.
most on screen couples don't have that amount of impact on me too.
I guess it's beacuse they had that special something between them and also beacuse they never chose the tradional way to deal with any of difficulties they exprieneced.

I think they were different from what you usually see in couples on TV. On a first look, you might not even believe in their love. I mean, if you tell people about BJ in S1, some of the things Brian did and say to Justin, people might think you're crazy for loving them but there are those little things throughout the entire series that always let you see that there's true love between them, in spite of every mistake they can make.

that's what I like about the show, that it changed so many people's views on the gay community

I agree with that Claudia, however I think any straight couple out there can learn a lot from BJ's long journy ,because they faced so many issues that straight ppl face too,and the main issue of course is the need to love and be loved, and learn how to live together as a couple.

If you mean on the emotional level they faced the same issues that straight people face then yes but on a social level straight people don't have the obstacles that gay people do.

I was speaking more about the emotional espect of BJ relationships which is relevent to every humen being, regardless if they are gay or straight, but there were obviously so many important social issues involved.

on an emotional level it did show that whether you're gay or straight you still face the same issues of being in a relationship.

it's funny that a fictional relationship actually made me start believing in rl love again, but it's true, bj did! i've always been an equal rights supporter though, so it really had nothing to do with sexual orientation for me, but definitely on an emotional scale, i was moved. what's so fantastic about them though is that they are not your run-of-the-mill ship, nor are they approached that way either. everything that occurred, for the most part, happened so organically and honestly and never tried to be anything it wasn't. the writers really did such a beautiful job writing a love story that transcends all barriers and just tries to touch your heart.
