I actually think that it was only because the writers had hard time finding proper balance in how to write Brian now that he officially asked Justin to move in. It was like they were trying very hard to remind us about S1 Brian, but going overboard with it. Which resulted in that contrived storyline. I can understand the reasoning of it, but the writing of that storyline left bad impression.
