Well, just that they couldn't be together and they kinda are part of different 'worlds', Martha married a farm boy and Lionel is a rich man. Martha is the Romeo and Lionel is the Juliet.

I thought Smallville would actually go Martha and Lionel for real, and somehow got Martha and Jonathan back together. Or even when he died. But they never really happened.
