Yeah, but you can't choose your family and you don't always get along very much with your family. So I guess 'friends' would have been nicer but, yeah, 'family' is quit fitting for them.

Hmm I guess that's also true, but I didn't really think of it that way. I thought he meant it more like family in the sense that sometimes you can become close enough to your friends/other people in your life that you become like a family even though you're not related by blood and I thought that's what he meant.
