Stopping by to say I really enjoyed the premiere. Clark/Lois were so cute, Chloe was awesome, and Oliver was hot. I'm so glad Justin is a regular this season. He's one of my favorites. I also liked Tess. I think she'll be a great villain.

I'm really looking forward to this season.

Okay so after 3 days and 4 viewings of the episode I finally have my review.

JLA/Ollie/Clark/Martian Manhunter:

That opening sequence was awesome! I loved seeing the JLA in action and the addition of Dinah to the team. Seeing AC spring out of the ice was super cool and real whoa moment for me and of course I’m really happy that the JLA have been looking for Clark for the past month. I also liked it that SV took the time to explain the absence of Victor and Bart, especially since SV isn’t exactly known for it’s continuity. Oliver’s dedication and determination to find Clark and his line, “Clark wouldn’t give up on us, so we’re not giving up on Clark” made the inner fangirl in me giddy. I love seeing strong men who stand up for what they believe in and never back down and I only hope that Oliver will be a positive influence in Clark’s life this season and Clark will learn from Ollie’s example.

Moving on to Clark in a Russian work camp: Um wow , Clark is looking fine! With the scruff and the wet hair and the tight grey shirt he’s definitely looking more grown up. I mean I always knew he was attractive, but I don’t think it ever really hit me just how gorgeous this man is until seeing this episode. Those red/blue jackets/t-shirts really do nothing for him and can someone explain to me how that red jacket survived in the Arctic for a month? What is it virtually indestructible or something? Okay sorry for the digression, back to Clark. So yes he’s in the Russian work camp and he’s stripped of his powers. He wants to phone home to let his family know he’s all right but this old Russian miser isn’t having any of it. Uh oh! What’s he going to do? In a very Rambo esque move he decides to take initiative and escape by stealing a truck. Unfortunately for Clark, he gets gunned down, crashes the truck and his arse gets handed to him by the evil Russians. Ah well at least he tried right?

So next we see Clark in the camp again getting water dumped on him to wake him up (I wish I had that job), and Clark attempts to escape once again. It’s nice to see Clark using his wits and still fighting to get out even though he doesn’t have his powers. I think he’s often way too dependent on them to get him out of jams. Poor Clarkie just wants to go home and the old creeper is just about to send him home in a box when who should show up but our hero, Ollie! YAY! And he’s speaking Russian! Double yay! Just when I think I can’t find Clark and Ollie anymore attractive, they decide to pummel each other as a way to get out of there alive. They also exchange banter that highly entertains me and leaves me . Clark asks Ollie, “What do you think you’re doing?”, Ollie responds with, “Just roll with it” and then they literally roll over and continue fighting. Ollie’s little quip about Clark’s batteries running low was great as was Clark’s “What took you so long?” when they finally got out of there.

Then they had that great scene together on the plane, where we find out what happened to Clark and how he miraculously managed to survive by walking forever until he woke up in a fishing boat with those goons. We also find out that Ollie has been looking for Chloe and that he knows that Lex’s people have her and that he knows that Dinah and AC have been taken by the same people. Can I just say that I love Ollie’s initiative here? He knows that Chloe is Clark’s best friend and he’s worked with her before so he automatically looks for her while he’s also searching for Clark. Ollie rocks my socks . Ahem, so yes, Clark wants to find Chloe, Ollie reminds Clark that he’s pretty much “useless” to which I must giggle at his bluntness . Yet in spite of Clark’s “uselessness” he’s determined to do whatever it takes to save his friend and Ollie immediately tells the pilot to change course and go to Montana.

They then proceed to bust into the highly guarded facility and Clark wants to split up to cover more ground. Hearing this, Ollie delivers another line that makes me giggle, “What are you going to do if you get caught? Bite someone” They split up and when they find each other again, Ollie’s been shot up with K-nite and Chloe’s mom’s spinal fluid and is now acting like a mind controlled zombie, which is essentially what he is at the moment. Eek! He ends up shooting Clark while trying to find info on Lex and Clark almost dies ! Justin Hartley is perfect in this scene. His voice gets all choked up when he says, “I’m so sorry…I couldn’t control myself” and he desperately tries to stop the bleeding and save his friend. Chloe runs in and tries to save Clark but her power isn’t working any more!

Luckily for Clark, he still has one super friend that Lex doesn’t know about. Martian Manhunter shows up and saves the day and the rest of the show, because honestly w/o Clark there is no show. Unfortunately for MM saving Clark stripped him of his powers (what is with all these guys losing their powers?), so Clark better watch his back b/c it doesn’t look like he has anymore people who can save his butt if he dies again. Then Clark delivers his speech, which is so made of win it’s not even funny. He’s finally decided to let go of the past and move on with his life! No more moping, no more whining, no more oh woe is me, why do I have these powers and why can’t I be normal? No! He’s finally embracing his destiny and moving forward! Please let this continue throughout the season because this is a Clark Kent I adore .

Finally, we get Clark meeting up with the JLA and thanking them for saving his life, which of course results in some heavy handed foreshadowing from Ollie and Dinah about Clark taking on a form fitting costume and leading a double life, which I could totally get on board with btw . Then the JLA splits up because they know their covers have been blown and decide to lay low. I do like how Ollie and Dinah went off in the same direction, I like to see it as a nod to their future romance and how they will be walking the same path soon enough.

Okay so I think I’ll end my review here for now. Tomorrow I’ll get up the rest of it .

Wow Rachel at the review. I basically thought the exact same thing.

Tom, I know eh. He finally looks like he's grown up. I think they should burn 75% of his previous wardrobe.

And the Ollie/Clark fight it was awesome, for obvious reasons. I got a text from my friend that said:

HOT FIGHT!

haha

That was kind of a nice anvil, and they're a very fun couple in the
comics, always enjoyable

Glad you enjoyed it CJ & JR! Since my part on the JLA alone was so long, I thought it best if I just posted that part and then write up and post the rest tomorrow. So that'll include, Chloe, Tess, Lois and Clois...unless I need to devote one post to Clois alone.

Haha you if you do that , you can also post it in our CLOIS thread.

If Ollie is a regular, then perhaps we'll get more hints of romance between him and Dinah

Heh I think I may have already posted most of what I want to say about Clois on the Clois thread. Maybe I could just cut and paste that into my review.

P.s I'm interested in Tess as our villain, she seems interesting to me so far

Yes I think she's a good addition to the cast. But I'll say more about her in the second part of my review.

I took FOREVER to write my review of this ep, but without reading anything from anyone else, this is what I came up with:

Quote:

That being said though, he's not the brightest hunk of muscle if he couldn't figure out why the hell Oliver was beating him up. I saw the plan right away. But I suppose that when you're Clark Kent and it always turns out that you can't trust those you think are on your side, it's excuseable.

The new opening credits are incredible. It's so weird that they dropped four main people in one year, but Lana went with them, so I can't complain. Then of course, I was baffled to see the four missing with three new names, though I had a very fangirl moment over Justin Hartley being main. It was just the two new people that come completely from nowhere that surprised me.

I felt bad for poor kidnapped Chloe being used the way she was. I was just sitting there going "please don't out Oliver, please don't out Oliver," and while I don't know what those number actually were, I was glad that Chloe figured it out before the last three numbers. Even if she did get forced to out him later, at least he got a heads up, sort of. I think I missed something though for all her brilliance.

I wish there'd been a bit more Jimmy. He always amuses me in his naivety, so having him be where two heroes were unmasked (if you can really call the maskless Aquaman unmasked) would have been a great opportunity to just be in his full Jimmy element. What little there was of him though was sweet, though I wanted to poke him for wimping out of his proposal. Chloe gets mad props though for accepting it anyway.

Clois! Oh my goodness, they were incredible. Lois was amazingly baddass with that gun. And the fact that they both have nameplates at the Planet now is like a dream. They're so on the right track. The way he smiled after telling her they were neighbors as he walked away, the way she smiled when she checked the desk next to her. It was all so amazing. I love Lois though, making a comment on Clark's 'first try at heroism.' I just had to laugh so hard at that. She just has no idea, does she?

It's a bit late, but here it is:
The opening was amazing! I love the JLA, although I was sad that Bart and Cyborg weren't among them, I was glad they did get a mention. The JLA were in action, kicking some serious butt! I love that Oliver wanted to find Clark, because "he wouldn't give up on us." Which is so true. We meet the new "villian" Tess Mercer. I like her. She's like the female Lex Luthor.

Clark Kent is in a Russian Camp! And he's scruffy and hot. *dies from Tom Welling's hotness* Back to the episode. All he wants is to call home. Aww, but since the Russian dude doesn't want that, Clark decides to take his chances and bolts to get a truck, although techincally he doesn't bolt because he was stripped of his powers. We come back to the Russian Camp and someone's pouring some water on Clark. Clark attempts to fight back once more, but really to no avail. Then who decides to pop up? Oliver! Speaking Russian! And with the name Roy Conner (now if you're a fan like I am, you know why that name is so awesome!) They duke it out and roll. Every girl's dream, honestly.

Next we see them on a plane. Clark tells Ollie about what happened to him and how he ended up in Russia, Oliver than tells him about Lex and about Chloe. Clark and Oliver decide to go save Chloe. They split up in the facility. Oliver finds AC and Dinah, where Clark finds Lois, they both team up to find Chloe, which they do. Clark then runs off to tell Ollie, I guess. And he gets shot. This was by far my favorite scene that wasn't related to a ship moment. When Ollie finally snaps out of it, it's so tear worthy. Justin did the scene so well. Martian Maneater shows up and saves Clark by flying him to the sun. *dances*

We're at the barn. How glad am I that Clark has a sense of destiny now? Or something like that. He doesn't want to sit back and watch anymore, he wants to be what he knows he can be.

The JLA meet up again, Ollie makes a joke and says he might have to have a dual identity like the rest of him. Hehe. They all go there seperate ways.

The Clois was wonderful. This is how it's suppose to be. Exactly. The squeaky chair makes me laugh so hard. The whole scene was sweet, but I have to say the last few seconds of that scene were precious. They're going to be partners. Lois' smile at the end was beautiful.

Overall I liked the episode, I give it a 4.5/5

Ellie and Emily, great reviews! And now, as promised here’s the second part of my review:

Tess:

Hmm so she can never replace Lex in my books, but I think she’s doing a great job so far. There’s a certain intensity in her gaze that is rather unnerving and I liked seeing her assert her authority over Reagan and stand her ground. She let him know without a doubt that she was in charge and that her authority was not to be unquestioned. Her scene with Lois was probably my fave scene with her in it and there were definite sexual connotations, (“So you like to play dress up?”) in their conversation. It looks like Tess and Lois will have a similar relationship to the one Clark and Lex had. In her final scene it looked like she was getting comfortable in Lex’s chair and in his home and that’s why she was so snappy and defensive with her minion. I get the feeling that finding Lex isn’t her only concern and now that she has control she won’t be quick to relinquish it even if Lex does come back.

Chloe/Chimmy:

Um okay so now Chloe has a super brain? She was always smart before but never this smart…although that kind of makes me wonder why it took her so long to realize that she wasn’t in DDS custody. I liked how Chloe tried to protect Ollie once she realized what was going on and how she tried to save Clark. Unfortunately, her healing ability seems to be gone. There’s a theory about this that I’ve heard on other boards and I’d like to bring up here later on in my review. Moving on to Chimmy: I thought they were adorable and their scene was so sweet! I loved how Jimmy was unsure of her answer so he wanted to wait and how Chloe knew that Jimmy was the one for her after having so much time to think it over. I love how she told him that he’s perfect for her and I really hope this signals a positive change in their relationship. Chloe either needs to fully commit to Jimmy or she needs to end it, because it’s not fair to either of them to continuously have this on and off relationship that leaves them feeling insecure about themselves.

Lois/Clois:

She’s back and better than ever! Yay Lois for busting into the Luthor mansion to find out what happened to her coz . And dude that skirt was really short! One wrong move and…. She handled herself brilliantly with Tess and I love how she didn’t back down when Tess got in her space. I also loved the little smirk on her face as she was being escorted out.

The next time we see Lois, she’s again undercover and has somehow managed to get to Montana to save Chloe. Clark hears her voice and immediately stops in his place and when Lois sees him they both exchange looks of astonishment at seeing each other. Lois tries to save face and say that Clark’s her prisoner, but the guards aren’t having any of it, so Team Lane and Kent proceed to knock out the guards! I love seeing these two working together! I also love how they usually seem to run into each other when they’re investigating things separately. Now that they’re actually going to be working together from the start they’re definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with. So yes,
then we get nice snappy banter like we did in Season 4 about Clark’s sense of humour and Lois’ feminine charms and I’m finding it hilarious. Oh I also love the way Lois handles that gun. She knows enough to reload it and release the safety on it which makes it look very realistic. Then they go off together to track down Chloe and get her out of Lex’s hell hole and we get more witty dialogue that includes Clark’s concern about how close the gun is to him and him asking Lois to not aim the gun at him. To this Lois responds, “God, Clark, I’m not aiming at you…besides it’s only your kneecap” . And Clark is like, “That makes me feel so much better”. Oh oh and I love how Lois calls him “Smallville” twice in this episode and she said she’d protect him . They find Chloe and Lois tells Clark to get out of the way so he acquiesces and Lois shoots the lock open and is all badass and my hero for life! Sadly her success is short lived because she’s tasered by the super geek and then she gets her first KO of the season. Random question: How is it that these people don’t have permanent brain damage after all the times they get knocked out? I mean seriously, their mental health should be at serious risk by now. Yes, so anyways, Lois is down for the count and Clark is sweet enough to check on her and see if she’s going to be okay and then he tells Chloe to watch out for Lois while he runs after Ollie. Hmm I find it interesting that in Bizarro, Lois told Clark to look after Chloe and now Clark’s telling Chloe to take care of Lois. Lois telling Clark to watch over her coz really showed how much she trusted him and how important Chloe was to her. I like to think that Clark asking Chloe to watch over Lois signifies that Lois is important to him and he’s trusting Chloe with her well being.

Finally, we have the last Clois scene at the DP, which I heart to pieces. Hee love, love, love, how Clark must have been there for awhile annoying the heck out of Lois with the squeaky chair and he’s having so much fun doing it. Lois gives an exasperated sigh and Clark glances at her and grins in a way that I haven’t seen him grin since Crimson when he was teasing Lois about if they did or did not have sex. He then compliments her on the way she handled herself in Montana and Lois looks slightly taken aback by the compliment, but she quickly recovers and then compliments Clark in turn. I really like the way that TW kept his hands busy in this scene by playing with his nameplate, this made the reveal of his name on it all the more significant at the end of the episode. Then of course we have Clark surprising Lois again by telling her that he’ll see her bright and early Monday morning. Lois immediately wants to know what in the name is going on and Clark informs her that he’s now working at the DP. Lois wonders why he changed his mind since he made it pretty clear in Arctic that he had no interest in the job. He says that he wanted to be in the middle of the action, which directly ties into his decision to leave the past behind him and find a new life. So yay Clark! You find that new life! Ahem, so Lois then asks him if he’s going to be starting down in the mailroom and Clark responds by softly saying, “No, I’m going to be a little closer to home. Looks like we’re going to be neighbours, Lane”. At this my heart stops and I need the defibrillator to get it going again . I loved the way his eyes flickered to his desk when he said it and how he thinks that being closer to home is being with Lois. His closer to home line can directly tie into him saying, “I just want to go home” earlier in the episode. Lois = home and I am with these two. Lois has this look on her face after she finds out that’s like, “Oh crap! What have I gotten myself into?” and then her smile changes to one of pride. I so can’t wait for the rest of this season!

Questions/ Speculations:
Okay so Tess is now in possession of the crystal. What exactly is she going to do with it? Is she going to find out who it belongs to? How will Clark find out that she has it and get it back? Oh and finding a footprint in the snow after a month??? Seriously? Shouldn’t that print be long gone by now?

Chloe’s new super brain is no doubt a side effect from her encounter with Braniac. I’ve seen speculation on other board about that and I’d like to bring it up here. Perhaps when Braniac attacked Chloe, he ended up leaving a part of himself inside her and this is how he’s going to regenerate. There’s no way that Clark actually destroyed him last season and this would account for Chloe’s super brain and her connection to technology. Also this could explain why she couldn’t heal Clark since her powers are based on her empathy and her ability to feel another person’s pain. Since Braniac wants to kill the human race and Clark, he’d have no desire to save him, so if Chloe has a part of Braniac in her then that would hinder her ability to save other people.

Another question I have is what exactly is the timeline going on in this episode? How on earth did they manage to travel back and forth between Smallville, Metropolis, the Artic, Norway, Greenland and Montana so fast? Also how did Clark manage to get the job across from Lois? What happened to the intern who got promoted to Chloe’s old job in the last episode? I’m not complaining that Clark is not at the DP, I’m just curious.

Overall I’d give the episode an 8/10. Okay so that concludes my review. What are your thoughts?

Here is my review of the SV Season 8 Premiere Episode

The Good: Well, there is something awesome about every season premiere that SV has done. Some have been the best episodes, or near the best episodes that I can remember. This one, was big. Just a huge episode, lots of sets, big cast, lots of action, guest stars and plots to wrap up and move on out. As we know, usually SV knows how to do "big episodes". I have to give credit to the entire cast, creative team, sound/visual effects, editors, just everyone did an exceptional job for the most part.

I like Tess' character so far. I think we should all be careful and give her character time to develop before we judge her too quick as a one dimentional henchman replacement for Lex. Here is the other thing...you can't replace Lex Luthor. You just can't. Michael Rosenbaum will have a special place in the hearts and minds of all SV fans, b/c he left us with one of the most memorable versions of Lex Luthor, to last a lifetime. Tess will be interesting, she is interesting. I know she creeped me out, that stare, not sure if that's contacts or what, but the stare is enough to make you think

Bringing Justin Hartley on as a cast member is going to pay off, it's already payed off in a big way. I've always felt that Clark needs a brother like figure that he can trust, that knows his secret, his true identity to encourage him and push him on the way to becoming superman. There is good scene presence between Tom and Justin. They play well against each other in scenes. It's two iconic characters. Two brothers of the Justice League. What more can you ask for? Yeah I know...some tights and a cape...and flying!

Nice work to have Black Canary and Aquaman make an appearance and aid in the search for Clark. Alana has pretty much blown us away as Black Canary...and while Aquaman can be better, he wasn't bad. I really wanted to see "Impulse", b/c I feel that Clark is like a big brother there and it's a good place to go for humor, etc, but I guess scheduling conflicts, or whatever got in the way. Hey, at least they go mentioned! Continuity alert! Maybe SV can still be saved So we got a Cyborg and Impulse mentions!

Lots of different good locations were used, and they spanned the globe. This episode felt almost like a big feature film. You had "Russia", "The Arctic", "Montana", "Metropolis" and "Smallville all included. Only in a premiere can you get that kind of international setting. Again, the budget is still there, that's why I applaud them for not saving it but giving the fans an excellent big opening to the season.

I felt that Tom Welling delivered a very solid performance. He is beyond comfortable with playing the role now, but I did feel that taking away his powers was kind of redundant, and they didn't do a good job of "explaining how" he made it as far as he did. I guess Martian Manhunter got him to that boat or not? It was a bit of a stretch.

So glad that Chloe is getting a new more interesting ability this time around. The "super hacking" power as we know, was the result of Brainiac trying to put her in a trance, etc or learn information from her? One way or another...she is going to be WatchTower more than ever in S8. I think it leaves a lot of possibilities for her, and giving her a romance arc with Jimmy's proposal will only increase her storylines, and make her that much more interesting to watch. You know something is going to happen!

Last but not least...I'm beyond happy with what they've done so far in one episode with Erica and Lois Lane. This is what we've all been waiting for, Lois Lane fans Enjoy these moments. I think I got chills when I saw the Lois/Clark scene at the Daily Planet. Love the name plates. The whole dynamic between Tom and Erica as investigative team is off the charts. Looking forward to a season full of that, friendly banther, Lois getting in trouble, Clark saving her, and more banther

The Bad: OK, I do have one major gripe. I'm sorry to see Martian Manhunter written off the way they did it. Yes I get the need to "put the character on the shelf, and bring him back maybe for the season finale", but I really enjoyed Phil Morriss' portrayal and I would have liked to see a bit more. Still, a pretty iconic scene in the loft...and I know for a second I could have sworn he handed Clark a red cape...but no, it's that darn indestructable jacket of his! Where can I get one of those, seriously? Anyone? I've been searching for that red jacket b/c I'm going as Clark Kent this halloween. I've already got the shoes, jeans, blue t-shirt, so I need that darn red jacket

The Ugly: One thing only. Not one single Kara mention, will get you a nomination for this category. Clark is worried about everyone else but his own flesh on blood? I don't get it. They mentioned Justice League members that couldn't be in the premiere, but couldn't mention Kara? Not even a line, like where is Kara? I guess nobody cares but me!

Overall...I give "Odyssey" a very strong 4 out of 5!

Great job on the reviews and comments everyone. I'm hoping we continue this in week 2 and so on.

Loved the review, Alex!

Agree about the lack of Kara... not even a mention. Like we should just basically forget about her. Apparently Clark did?

Loved the final shot of Clark/Lois at the Daily Planet... I got goosebumps!

You know Ken, I wrote that for you my friend I'm sure everyone else is past that...but I promised you and didn't want to let you down. I've been super busy with other things on the boards and real life so I just now got a chance to do it today, but like I said, glad you enjoyed it and you know I always keep my word. Yes, it was one of the very few mistakes by the creative team. I think we both agree, they have so much time to do this episode, so they had the chance to slip in a line or two, but missed out completely!

When Lois put Clark's name plate down, I was hoping and praying they would zoom in on both their name plates on the desks facing each other, it would have been a perfect shot to go out in that scene, but it wasn't done that way
