Smallville 4x15 "Sacred" Episode Discussion

Official WB description of "Sacred"

Chop, chop! After learning that Jason (Jensen Ackles) and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) are in China searching for one of the mysterious kryptonian crystals, Clark (Tom Welling) and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) follow in the hopes of finding it first. Clark finds an artifact that leads them to the crystal but he must battle Isobel, the witch, who has once again inhabited Lana's body in order to take the crystal for herself. Meanwhile, Lex has more information on the crystals than he is letting on.

Allison Mack, John Glover, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider also star.

Brad Turner directed the episode written by Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders.

Oy.

The thought of Mulana is giving me nightmares. The icky Clana scene from the preview isn't helping.

Sigh, I'm scared.

Oh look, it's the House of Flying Lanas...

Yeah, the Clana definitely isn't helping me like this ep.

Suck suck suck and other words that rhyme with that one.

They haaad to bring the freaking Clana back? Because we all missed it so much?

I don't think there was even a single scene that I remotely enjoyed. Except maybe Mulana digging up a statue of Stompy. Snort. This entire storyline is the stupidest thing ever.

Sigh, I'm gonna go decide if my Chloe love is enough to make me keep watching this show. Even though they couldn't even include her in the shot of Clark's inbox. Nope, Lois is gone and we get two mentions of her. Chloe's gone and we get nothing. Yeah, really loving you this week, PTB.

Also, Lois...WHO IS A GUEST STAR has her sister get an entire episode and Chloe's mother has warranted 3 scenes in 4 seasons?

I'm gonna go to bed now or I'll be tempted to write death threats to PTB over and over again.

There are definitely ways that this episode could have improved. I did like the proper send off for Dr. Swan. Of course once again leading Clark straight to Jor-El. This time there was no torture of any kind. However, as Jor-El was giving the speech, I felt I was listening to a line from Mission Impossible and at the end there would be a message that said, "this tape will self destruct in five seconds." Kind of disappointed it wasn't there. At least now we know at little bit more about what the hell the stone storyline is all about.

Other things interesting. It was interesting to have Lana and Clark teaming up. Although I can't say that I miss it. The chemistry is sort of lacking in that department. She really nailed him when she said something about in that situation trusting Lionel Luthor and him. Glad to know what category she places Clark. I also found it interesting that Jason could lie his way through the episode and still be at least somewhat forgiven in the end all because he got the stone for her. That maybe total bull but it got back in the door. Now the question is, how is Clark going to take it from him? And how is he going to find the one that Dr. Crosby has?

It was nice to see Lionel in this ep. I still have a hard time figuring him out. Sometimes I am inclined to think that he has changed his ways to a point and the rest of the time I believe that he is putting on a good show for us all to enjoy and buy into only to see him pull the 180 on us in the end. But Lionel did seem in a mood to help everyone out. Lex was pretty good in this ep too. I loved how he called Jason while standing right behind him. That is always a neat trick. i guess what I want to know is, who has more money than him? Could it be momma Teague that is responsible for the round of torture?

And of course there is Jonathan and Martha. I am actually surprised they didn't rip him a new one for jumping on the Luthor jet to China and leaving just a note behind. There, the lecture might have actually been called for. All I hope is that they wrap up this storyline with the stones soon and that the ending to it isn't completely lame. At least next week we have Lois back.

Not to sound too protective of Lois....but she's LOIS LANE.Clark/Superman's future wife. She's not just a 'special guest star'.

But still, I think Candygirl is pointing out the injustice of the situation. Lois is still, in the context of a Smallville, a guest star while Chloe is a regular and has been for four years. It doesn't seem fair to introduce family of a guest star simply because she's a 'name' while a regular doesn't get one episode in four years devoted to finding/seeing a mother who dumped her then went insane. There are so many plot possibilities. But its Chloe so she's ignored.

[Ending rant]

I heard there was a Chloe scene filmed for Sacred but it got got cut.

[Seriously I'll shut up about Chloe now]

Ok...it's nice that we can see Lex! And Lionel! Yay! But its because of a dumb tattoo! Nay.

Its just hard to have anything to say about this ep. Its just there and I don't have any feelings either way.

I understand that and it's sad Chloé's ignored,I hate it too,she deserves better. But I can see where the writers are coming from in showing a little bit more of Lois's background. She's one of the most important characters of the superman mythology after all.I have no idea why we get that Isobel storyline that doesn't make a lot of sense when we could have great plots involving Chloé.

Anyway, weird episode but I enjoyed the Lex&Jason stuff.Maybe that's because Michael and Jensen are great actors. That most certainly helped.

I don't mind them showing Lois more then Chloe. I was one of the few that said "They should have kept Chloe dead after the S3 finale." To me, it doesn't seem she has much of a purpose. Even now that she knows Clark's powers, it seems the writers don't want to really expand on it. That kinda bothers me.

Tonight's episode was a bit much. I felt like I was watching Alias.

And I noticed all the Veronica Mars/Chloe Sullivan fans ... honestly, I don't see a single thing they have in common, other then hair color. Veronica is alot more mature then Miss Chloe Sullivan, and alot more stealth.

Well, I enjoyed this episode. I knew either way I would cause I knew Ackles and Rosenbaum would be getting plenty of screentime, but it didn't suck either. I'm amazed.

- College applications. Continuity!

- Great sendoff for Swann. Though it was odd for the change in heart, now he wants him to go to Jor-el.

- Oh great, that damned key is back.

- *yawn* Stones. Bore.

- That was a cute phone call. Well it started out that way. They he lied, which in the spoilers he originally said Las Vagas, they should have stuck to that. But the goodnight slipup, and he realized it as soon as he said it. And Lana actually caught it too. Wow. The brains are really working this episode.

- Lex followed him. Ha. This is going to be interesting.

- Now Clark wants to listen to Jor-el, wtf? This can't be good.

- A Lionel/Lana scene. Cool. Have we ever had one of those? And damn, Lionel is just helping everyone isn't he? So now Lana has the knowledge that Jason is a desendent of Gertrude, the one that had Isobel killed. And according to Spell, Isobel can obtain Lana's memories, this can't mean anything good for Jason.

- Clark goes to Lana. Ok. Kinda random. And he invites himself along. But there is one thing to point out, we were all wrong about the "I can't trust Clark comment." It wasn't about Clark or Jason, it was about Lionel.

- I'm enjoying all these Jex scenes. But now they've been caught. Hmm.

- "There's two answers to that and their both three times zones away." Ha. I just about always hate Lana's bitchyness but that line amused me. Along with... "It's funny, the two people I ended up trusting are Lionel Luthor and... you." And Clark/Lana relating! Wow. Too bad Lana has no clue there relating.

- "In the end I have the feeling I may be the one protecting Lana from you." Geez, there really pushing that Jason might really be a evil sadist bastard angle.

- I'd like to say at this time that even if this episode sucked more than anything in world, I'd still love it just cause of Ackles & Rosenbaum. There stealing the show. Screw Clark and Lana, this is the Lex & Jason show tonight. We finally getting more then two seconds of MR and JA's acting abilities are really being put to use finally... after 15 friggin episodes.

- Clark/Lana scene. And I'm not gagging. There finally not being over the top with the Clana. That chick they met up with is talking funny.

- Lex got thrown into Jason's arms. God, the Jex is just all over the place. I think I've officially moved on from Clex.

- Lex arranged it? Dumbass. You paid someone to kick your ass, and Jason's. And then someone paid them more to beat ya'll asses harder. *shakes head* I wonder who... I mean judging by what we've been given all along, I'd say Lionel or Gwenivere, but which one?

- Boring temple scene. Clark spots what looks like a dress... and turns out it is and it has kryptonite eyes. Ouch.

- Dead person! And damn them. Tease us with almost putting us out of our misery of dealing with Lana.

- Torture. Heee. What can I say, I like me some bloody JA & MR. Jason was much quieter than Lex with his meeting with the sponge. I also kinda surprised they didn't have Lana screaming or something. Nice reactions to Lana by Jason and Lex. Jason was practically lifting his feet off the ground to trying to get out of those chains.

- Isobels' back. Ummm... well, we learn in extremely harmful situations she will protect Lana. Well, Jason's screwed, Lana's always in danger. She eknowledges Jason & Lex. Now, let's listen carefully to what she says to Jason... "You are a resilent lad aren't you? So earnst yet so tragically doomed to pay for the sins of your ansestors." HELLO?!? So now going back to what I said earlier, thanks to Lana's memories this time around, she knows Jason is related to Gertrude, and yet he's still alive. Not that mind, I want JA to stick around for as long as possible, I'm biased yes, but can't they follow some kind of continuity here? Unless for some reason, Isobel is more interested in maybe Gwenivere, than Jason?

- Um two things, that jacket just happening to be laying there? And they should have KK be sweaty and in dirty white tank top more often. She looked pretty hot there.

- Jason/Clark arguing. Bah. Why didn't Clark throw Lionel's name out though? Jason blamed him and instead Clark just throw blame back at Jason, instead of saying who really sent Lana on this great adventure.

- Jason figures out this actual purpose of the map and Clark figures out the stones location. Yippie. The hating duo actually did something together completely by accident. But sorry, Isobel figured it out first. Ha.

- Heh. It's a freakin horse. The fight insues. KK learns how to act with a big voice. Brava. But during all of this, where do Lex & Jason disappear to? And they weren't together either, or that's how it appeared.

- So the sword stabbed Clark, apparently a magic induced wound. So did Clark's abilities heal once he pulled the sword out or did TPTB just completely forget about it? Cause the only mention of the wound is when Lana asks what she's done, and Clark moves his bloody shoulder into view. And is it just me or did Jason totally roll his eyes at Clark's wound?

- Lex for once doesn't oggle on Lana gets right to business. "Did you find the stone?" And while I knew from the spoilers Clark didn't have the stone, the way the scene was played I totally would have bought that he did.

- "Sometimes I look at you and there's a part of you I don't recognize anymore." *snickers* Oh and look so did Lana. That is funny coming from him. Slightly interesting convo they had there. And Clark has an email from Swann. Hmm.

- Papa Luthor denies involvement. So if he was telling the truth, it was Gwenivere. I'm oh so curious. But the MB is totally still in there, he's just more discreet then before.

- Okay. Be mad at Jason. Makes sense. But when was he in cahoots with his mother? It's been made pretty clear he doesn't like the woman and he's not helping her, she was the one who used him in fact, and quiet stupidly I might add... so where is Lana coming with this from? And he does back up his wanting to protect Lana pretty well. He has a point, they did all get tortured.

- "Give me one good reason." And out comes the stone. Jason you little sneak. He mailed it to himself. That's cute. I don't understand why he would give it to her though... unless he thinks he somehow going to save himself from Isobel's wrath, by helping her. Pretty risky though. But why on earth does she respond with, "Did you tell your mother?" Gah! Why, oh why would she ask that? Why would she think that? Where is this coming from? Geez, Jason just slap the crap out of her and run for life already!

- "Blink twice if you can understand me." That was cute. She does. They hug. And all is well... or is it? At first Lana smile was happy and guieuine, but then, some mischive played into it. Does she think she is going to play Jason? Or is Isobel somehow still very close to the surface... or did KK just goof it up? Hmm.

- Crobsy's dead? So where's the stone? Interesting. But alas we won't be finding out any of these questions next week as it'll be the Lois and Lucy Lane show! That's just wrong after having an episode like this. Cause aside from the cheesy kung-fu wannabe matrix fighting it was a good episode.

Something tells me that the writers watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon way too many times...Am I the only one who has become cynical about this season being any good?

It's definetly very "yawn worthy." Cannot deny that.

Actually, that EXACTLY what she is. The thing is...this is Smallville. In no other canon source EVER has Lois belonged. Not comics, not films, not cartoons etc.

I know I come off as a Lois hater, but believe me, I'm not. I absolutely loved The adventures of Lois and Clark. I loved their chemistry, I loved their slow building of a relationship, but most of all I loved Lois. She was a kind of role model for me growing up. I always saw her as Superman's sidekick as much as the love of his life. So, I know how important she is for the future.

This isn't the future though. In Smallville, Lois is a guest star. She's not from here, she hasn't visited for all we know for the last 3 years. If this was Metropolis, at the DP, then I would think nothing of devoting a whole arc to Lucy. I just don't think this is the time. Introducing Lois is one thing...giving as much background and family history as they have is another altogether. I would just rather see TPTB delve into the characters they already have rather than bringing in new ones to focus on.

All that said, I hope you know that I'm not attacking you at all. I know lots of people love Lois and think it's great that she's getting so much screentime. I envy you guys because I'm sure I'd enjoy the show more this season if I could like Lois. I'm just a Chloe fan to the core, so for me, it would be more enjoyable to see the storyline of her mother touched on, rather than seeing a member of Lois's family who has never even been mentioned before.

Hee, this is all about "Lucy", not "Sacred" though.

Oh, I do have a positive comment about Sacred:

I love Jason. I love how honest and loyal he's been. When stupid Clark gritted out that Lana was in China because Jason lied to her, I was yelling "Hypocrite!" Jason did what he thought he had to to protect Lana. I wish the Jalana could last forever...I really do think that they're good for each other.

OT POST Just because this thread is a little slow:

The death of your best friend makes people grow up very quickly. I think we've been shown alot of Chloe's insecurities because the love triangle was such a big thing on SV. Still though, ummmmm, you see nothing besides hair color in common??

They're both teenage girls whose mothers left them to live with their fathers. They both assume much more responsibility than the normal teen. The are both obsessed with digging, investigating, and uncovering the truth. They both have a black male best friend that show up to help them when the plot needs it. They are both snarky and sarcastic and constantly insult the popular set. You know, for starters.

I think S1 Chloe was most like Veronica b/c her character has been changed by the love triangle, the Lionel thing, and the addition of Lois this season. Still, I'm amazed that you don't see a teeensy bit of similarity.
