Smallville 10x07 "Ambush" Episode Discussion

The General (guest star Michael Ironside) and Lucy Lane (Peyton List) decide to drop in on Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling) for a surprise Thanksgiving dinner. Clark and the General get off to a rocky start after Lois' father bashes the superheroes and tells Clark he is trying to pass a vigilante registration law. Meanwhile, in an effort to stop the vigilante registration act from being passed, Rick Flagg (guest star Ted Whittall) lies to Lucy in order to lure Clark away from the farm long enough for him to assassinate the General. Lois is torn between making her father proud and her love for Clark. Turi Meyer directed the episode written by Don Whitehead & Holly Henderson.

Thanks for starting Lynn! I LOVED this episode and seeing Lois finally stand up to her Dad and Clark standing up the General was AWESOME. Also, I'm really loving all the Ollie/Tess scenes.

All I can say is, WOW!

Clois: They were the cutest ever. I loved everything from the teasing to the trials that the General put on both Clark and Lois.

"General there's something I've been meaning to ask you"- gah too bad we didn't get to see what Clark's question was but I bet I know what it is

Oh and how awesome was that ending Thanksgiving feast. It was absolutely perfect.

Suicide Squad: So that's the reason that they were tracking Oliver and Clark as a way of protecting them while killing anyone who gets in their way or supports the Vigilante Registration Act. So did not see that one coming.

The Talon: Speaking of not seeing something coming, The Talon- I can't believe it's gone! It's been apart of Smallville for years that I just can't fathom the fact that it's no longer there. Will they rebuild or will that lot become something else once the rubble is cleared? So hard to believe.

Oliver/Tess: I can understand Olivers pain and he only took it out on Tess because she is the one in the line of fire. I did like the ending with them though. LOL Ollie doesn't know what 'frenemies' means. And I can't believe that Ollie is walking away from Watchtower. His reasons make sense but still, it was kind of sad.

Other Thoughts: Definately giving it the 10+ it deserves!

Everything is coming to an end. The Talon is gone, Ollie is leaving Watchtower- it's truly starting to feel that this is the final season

Next Weeks Preview: Saw the Abandon preview online and it was awesome. I can't wait to see Teri Hatcher!

Yeah I think I know what Clark's question is too. Some might think it's too soon. But with it being the final season and they know each other completely that it kinda feels right. And Clark is a old fashion gentlemen, when he's serious about a woman he makes a commitment.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking when the episode ended, too.

I haven't seen a couple of the episodes before, because I was so busy, but I guess Tess moved into the Watchtower, huh? I could understand that Olli would let out his anger on Tess, he's still grieving and she's changing stuff around.
Also, I got an interesting vibe when Tess was patching him up to last season's scene when Chloe did it. It seemed that it had always been Chloe's job to patch him up (at least when she was working for the league) and it was just another slap in the face for him.
I liked that he struck a truce with Tess and I loved how he said they're practically like family now.

I enjoyed the scenes with the Lanes, even though I kept wanting to smack all of them including Clark. Glad they made up. If Clark really did ask for Lois' hand at the end, I must say his timing is off the charts horrible I mean, the General had just gotten used to the idea of Clark and Lois together, possibly for longer, but not this

Okay 2 questions for you guys:

1. What do you guys think of this Vigilante Registration Act?

2. What did you all think of the changes at Watchtower?

-For me it was bittersweet. It was kind of like the chapter of Smallville that we know and love has finally come to an end and though Watchtower will hopefully go on, it will be in a world we are no longer apart of

1. What do you guys think of this Vigilante Registration Act?
I think it's going to cause some serious issues on the show, but I can understand why it was passed. While our guys use their powers to do good and help, sometimes there's collateral damage and that's all people see. Also, there's people that use their powers to do bad things, as we all know.
Guys running around in leather is a form of self-administered justice and if someone else takes it upon them to take vengeance on all murderers it could end bloody. Realistically speaking, I can understand why it was passed, even though I can't form a proper sentence to explain it

2. What did you all think of the changes at Watchtower?
They were very Tess-like. The huge desk by the back wall/window gives her an excellent view of who's entering the building; she has that set-up at the mansion and her work as well. It also shows the difference between Tess and Chloe: Chloe used to have a couch and a coffee table there, for people to sit. She was usually around the computers anyway, walking around. Tess is more of a "sitter".
I had no problem with Tess changing the Watchtower, because as painful as it might be for Oliver to admit, this isn't just a temporary position for Tess (as far as they know, Chloe isn't coming back). It's going to be constant, so why should she hold up a shrine for Chloe's work when it hinders her to do her work properly?
I do think that she went a bit too far with the changes, though, and I can understand why Oliver was upset.

So, what can I say about this week’s ep of SV? I absolutely LOVED it! It’s easily my second fave episode of S10, right after Homecoming, at least thus far. I’ve wanted an episode that dives more into Lois’ past and her relationship with her family, and Michael Ironside and Peyton List were two of the people that I wanted TPTB to bring back the most, so I was beyond thrilled when I heard that TPTB not only got them back, but they got both of them back in the same episode! This was my most highly anticipated episode so far after Homecoming and I’m so glad that after the disappointment that was Harvest that it not only lived up to my expectations, but it surpassed them. Anyways, without any further ado, let’s get on to the review:

Ollie/Tess: It looks like these two are going to be paired together a lot this season, which I love b/c I think they’re awesome together, although like I’ve said before I feel bad that Tess constantly has to listen to Ollie talking about Chloe and comparing her skills to Chloe’s. In their first scene together, Ollie bursts into WT clearly in need of some medical attention. He looks for the first aid kit and can’t find it in the first place he looks, so he then turns to Tess and takes in his surroundings for the first time. Tess has done a bit of a redecorating and added a desk and some chairs (the horror!) and Ollie’s not taking kindly to that. She gives him the first aid kit, ignores his griping, and tells him to take off his shirt. Hmm we haven’t had shirtless Ollie since Supergirl...wow that’s 3 eps in a row w/o shirtless!Ollie, must be a record...so yeah I guess they figured it was time for JH to strip again. Ollie acts like a little girl who doesn’t want to be seen naked and Tess is all “oh please, I’ve seen it all before”. Please Ollie, your faux modesty is not becoming. Ollie gets a look like he remembers that this is true and takes off shirt.

Tess gets a good look at his beat up back and comments that he had a rough night. She tends to his wounds while he talks about how he ran into someone with “a serious axe to grind”. Hmm so we saw Chloe tending to Ollie’s wounds last season before they hooked up...does that mean that Ollie and Tess are going to get back together eventually? Tess is all friendly and reminisces about how Ollie’s cure for that was two raw eggs and a Belgian beer, but Ollie gives her the brush off and curtly tells her that he only wants to deal with the 9-5 professional aspect of their relationship. Geez, Ollie would it kill you to chill. It’s not like she’s trying to jump your bones or anything. Tess is so awesome though that even though you can tell that his brusqueness hurts her, she doesn’t say anything and just keeps tending to his wounds, until the iodine reacts with one of his cuts.

They realize that there’s something underneath his skin and find the subdermal tattoo that Flagg tagged him with in Shield. Tess recognizes the skulls and crossbones symbol as the symbol for the Suicide Squad. She explains that there were certain jobs that regular agents couldn’t do, so Waller would send the Squad in to take care of those assignments. She tells him they were led by Rick Flagg and that they all died when Checkmate was attacked. Ollie instantly recognizes Rick Flagg from the files that Tess pulls up. I love the way he delivers the line “Wait a second, wait a second, I know this guy!” and the look of realization in his eyes when he sees the picture of Flagg. He tells Tess about his experience with Flagg in Lazarus/Shield and that he’s a recruiting a new squad. Tess tells him that if he tagged him, he’s tracking him and Ollie thinks that Flagg probably tagged Clark too.

Ollie calls Clark and they meet up in Clark’s loft so they can see whether or not Flagg had Clark tagged too. Of course, as we already know, Deadshot got Clark in Shield. Ollie’s surprised that Flagg was able to track him b/c of his impermeable skin, but Clark reasons that Flagg must have used blue k. Wow, how many times have we either seen blue k or heard about this season and last season? It feels like a lot and that’s kind of unusual b/c usually it’s the green k that we get bombarded with. I guess they decided to give the green k a rest for a little bit. Actually have we seen green k yet this season? I don’t think we have. Clark tells Ollie that they have to figure out why Flagg’s tracking them and Ollie mentions that Tess is working on that at WT, then he takes the opportunity to complain about the fact that Tess is making herself comfortable there. Um, Ollie, you guys invited her to join you and gave her full access to WT. What did you think she was going to do? Fortunately, Clark is level-headed enough to recognize good help when he sees it and reminds Ollie that if it wasn’t for Tess they wouldn’t know about their tattoos; they wouldn’t even be on Flagg’s trail. Just after he says that, Clark hears someone coming up the stairs and tells Ollie that he has to go now. He looks in the direction of the window and Ollie immediately takes the hint and thinks it’s laughable. He chuckles, “What the window? What are we sixteen?” LOL. Clark stresses now and doesn’t give Ollie any choice, so Ollie sighs in defeat then actually jumps/somersaults out the window. LMAO.

Back at WT, the words “Assassinate Hero Target in Smallville” flash on the computer in bright red letters. Tess says that she intercepted one of the Squad’s transmissions. “Flagg’s planning on killing someone, but we need to decode this before he does.” Ollie impatiently rolls his eyes and gripes about how Chloe would have had this done yesterday. Good lord, will you stop please? We get it already. You miss Chloe, you love Chloe, as Cat would say, she’s the “Olive Oyl to your Popeye, the Minnie to your Mickey”, but c’mon give Tess a break. She’s doing the best that she can. Tess has finally had it with Ollie’s comparisons/cutting remarks and tells him, “Oliver, I’m trying to help you and you keep acting like I’m the enemy.” Ollie defensively tells her that he’s just trying to get used to all the changes at WT and then waxes nostalgic about all the time he spent with Chloe at WT...in OSV. He tells her that it’s hard for him to be there with someone else, but at least he said this to her gently. She says, “Okay, and I’m not trying to take her place, Oliver, but at some point you need to start treating me like I’m on your side.” YES! YES TESS! I love the way she handled this situation. Instead of yelling at him and telling him to STFU, b/c she’s doing the best she can, or storming out and telling him to deal with the problem himself (which I admit, I’d be tempted to do, but then again, I’m clearly not as awesome as Tess Mercer ) she calmly deals with him and is very mature about it. I love it that she stands up for herself and simply points out that if they’re a team, they need to act like one. Ollie finally shuts up, because he has nothing else to day and he knows that she’s right.

Later at WT, Clark, Ollie and Tess have finally found the address belonging to the Suicide Squad’s target. Clark thinks they’re after him, but Tess disagrees. “That doesn’t make any sense,” she says, “Flagg would try to recruit you before he’d try to kill you, Clark.” Clark asks her how she’s sure. “Because Flagg spent so much time on the frontlines with super powered people that he identifies with them. To him you’re all freedom fighters, and he would attack anyone that threatens that. Presidents, senators, the military...it doesn’t matter.” Clark brings up the Vigilantes Registration Act and they figure out that the target is the General.

After Clark saves Lois from the explosion at the Talon, Clark and Ollie take down Flagg’s truck and confront him about his lunacy. Question: Why is Ollie still using his voice modifier? It’s not like he has anything to hide anymore...then again I guess the same thing could be said for his GA outfit. Maybe the whole ensemble gets him in his hero mode or something. Ollie snarks that Flagg attacking his own country is a really classy move, but Flagg argues that he did it for his country. He thinks that if he kills General Lane, he’ll kill a movement....um then why did you wait until the problem got this big to do something about it? It would have made more sense for him to go after Godfrey if he wanted to nip the problem in the bud. “That registration act is nothing but a weapon, to profile, hunt, and destroy us,” he tells them. Ollie’s not in the mood for a history lesson, but Flagg begs to differ. He hates that Ollie set himself as an example for politicians to use against other heroes. He thinks that since Ollie came out with his secret identity, politicians will use that to get other heroes to come out too and it will turn all of the heroes into targets. Clark says that they’re not going to let that happen. Flagg scoffs at his naivete and says if the bill passes it already has. “Don’t you see? America’s turning against us. We’ve got to fight back, show strength, make them choose us as their leaders.” Clark thinks that’ll only stir up anti-vigilante sentiments and that violence isn’t the answer. Flag disagrees. “Violence is the only answer,” he says. He glances over at his partner and sees that he’s coming to. “More and more heroes are coming over to my side,” he tells them right before his partner teleports them both out of there. Well that’s certainly handy. Nightcrawler’s cooler though...yeah I know different comics and all but still.

In their last scene at WT, Ollie comes to Tess with a peace offering. He’s brought Chinese food and beer. Tess is understandably surprised. “I thought you said no happy hour.” Ollie shrugs it off and excuses it with, “I’m still on the clock so...” He asks her if she’s found out anything about removing the tattoo and she tells him that she has Emil looking into it. Hey Emil! We haven’t seen him since Lazarus...before that it was Persuasion. She smiles at him and says, “No need to worry my friend.” Aww. I love you, Tess and I love your scenes with Ollie, when he’s not on your case. Ollie thinks it’s too early for friend, but he offers a compromise. “Friendly, I can do that.” Well at least he’s finally trying. Tess decides to take what she can get. She gets up from her chair and walks around her desk to sit beside him. “I was beginning to think the best I could do was, ‘friendly’.” Ollie tells her he doesn’t even know what that means and she laughs at that. Hold the phone. Tess laughed! She’s laughed twice in one season! And it’s only episode seven! Dude, that’s a record!

Ollie admits that they’ve been through a lot together, “tax audits and typhoons” and says they’re practically like family at this point. Um, Ollie, you do realize that ‘family’ usually means more than ‘friend’ right? Tess glances over at him in surprise. Ollie’s been giving her such a hard time and to go from ‘friendly’ to ‘family’ so fast must make her head spin and like I mentioned before given how isolated she was last season...actually since she came to the show, it really means a lot to her to finally be accepted. Another thing is from what we’ve heard of her childhood, if she actually told Clark the truth in Turbulence, she didn’t have the best relationship with her family as she was growing up....and we’re going to learn more about that this week! Yay! Tess agrees that they’ve come a long way and says, “From the middle of the ocean to the top of the city” and raises her beer to him. He clinks cans with her. That was a nice callback to Toxic and a nice reminder of how they first met.

Ollie then turns the conversation to his next move. He’s going to leave WT. “It’s a funny thing about Green Arrow showing his face to everyone, now everyone want to stick theirs in my business (does that surprise you, Ollie?), and peak in my window, and...What if someone sees me come in here? Watchtower, I mean. There are people who count on this place remaining secret, they count on that for their safety (question: How does the tallest building, or what I assume is the tallest building, in Metropolis remain secret? It’s not like on Chuck where they have a secret underground facility that no one can see). They didn’t step out into the limelight like I did. That wouldn’t really be fair to them would it?” No it wouldn’t, Oliver. I’m really glad that Ollie made this decision, because it was clear that when he went public, he didn’t think about the ramifications of his actions and how they’d affect his teammates. It’s nice to see that know he’s realized how his identity being public could harm the JLA, so he’s decided to remove himself from WT to protect them. Bravo Ollie. I approve. Tess appreciates the tough choice Ollie just made. Ollie knows that it’s the right one though and he says that WT is in good hands. You can tell that Tess is touched by that comment. YAY Ollie! So yeah overall a good episode for Ollie and Tess and unlike last week, I wasn’t bored by a single scene that Tess was in.

Clark/Lois/Clois/The Lanes: I figured it would just be easier to put them all together, since this ep was all about Lois’ family. The ep opens with Flagg and we see that he’s tracking someone, before it cuts to the farmhouse and we get Clois and one of their morning afters. HUZZAH! As they walk down the stairs into the kitchen, Clark puts on a t-shirt (boooooo! TAKE IT OFF, KENT! I’m good, really.) before he heads over to the fridge to get out some orange juice. Okay, I LOVE it that Lois is wearing the jersey. That’s an awesome callback to Committed and how Lois thought that they slept together when she woke up in his jersey...well now they actually have. I also love that it’s such a coupley thing for Lois to be in Clark’s clothes. It looks like they just threw on some clothes and headed to the kitchen for some nourishment before diving into round 50...or however many times they did it since Harvest. They’re definitely happy though and still totally hot for each other, fortunately they didn’t suffer from any awkwardness after their first time, unlike Leonard and Penny on TBBT. That was just painfully awkward. Anyways, Lois is such a tease and cuts a strawberry (why? Why doesn’t she just pop the whole thing in her mouth?) and eats it, then covers her mouth with her hand and smiles while Clark watches her and grins. Clark pours them what’s left of the orange juice (seriously how long have they been at it? The OJ is like completely done!) and gives Lois the glass with more juice in it. Aww how thoughtful. Lois giggles and is all giddy and it’s adorable and they engage in some serious HESH as they drink the OJ and Clark asks Lois what she’s in the mood for.

Lois is a little minx and tells him, “Oh, I’m in the mood. Just not for breakfast.” She gives Clark a smoldering look and he looks at her like, “Where have you been all my life! I can’t believe what I was missing out on.” She saunters over towards the door but stops at the railing when Clark calls her name. “Lois, the bedroom’s upstairs.” Lois is well aware of that, “Uh huh, but the porch swing is out there.” Kinky. Clark’s definitely into the idea. Being with Lois sure makes him adventurous and bold, since he’s willing to have sex outside in broad daylight. Lois makes it to the door and she’s about to turn the doorknob when Clark grabs her arm and spins her around to face him. Heh, I LOVE it that Clark couldn’t wait to get to Lois, so he had to use his super speed. Lois puts both hands up above her head, a la Crimson, in what Zoomway would say is the “girl expects the whole car to be washed, and not just the ashtray vacuumed” pose. They proceed to make out and it’s hot and it’s wonderful and it’s interrupted by stupid freaking Rick Flagg! NOOOOO! Dude I do not want to see your face when Clois are going at it like bunnies! Get off of my screen! They cut back and forth between Clois indulging in some serious kissage and Lois helping Clark take off his shirt (Thank you, Lois!) with her legs hiked up on his hips and her pressed against the door and Flagg and his croney tracking someone in SV who’s headed for the Kent farm. Lois playfully breaks away from Clark and is beaming as she opens the door and heads outside. She clearly wants Clark to chase her. Unfortunately the Clois loving is interrupted when Lois turns around and sees her dad in his uniform cutting a very imposing figure. I love how Clark puts his hands over his crotch to hide Clark Jr. LOL. Both Lois and Clark address the General, then Lucy pops into view. She’s more than little amused by this situation and smiles and says, “Happy turkey day, sis,” while Lois and Clark look completely mortified and they have no idea what to do next. “Great, the whole Lane family’s together for the holidays,” Lucy cheekily says. Cue credits.

After the credits, we see that Lois and Clark are dressed (boooo) and heading down the stairs. Clark tells her that she doesn’t have to be nervous. Her dad just wants to spend time with her. Lois thinks he’s more interested in interrogating Clark. Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! She hopes that Clark’s monogrammed jacket has disappeared and he assures her that he took care of it. Yay she’s seen his jacket! Does that mean she’s seen him in his outfit? When is she going to see him in his outfit on screen? I want! Clark reasons that the General’s met him before, but Lois reminds him that it was before they were a couple. “None of my other boyfriends have ever survived the General’s assault.” He calmly reassures her that he’ll be fine, but Lois is still panicking. “Fine?” she says, he smiles and nods. “Fine won’t pass inspection.” She smooths out non-existent wrinkles on his shirt and says, “You have to be perfect. It is important to me that my dad likes you.” Clark gently tells her, “And it’s important to me that you’re happy. There’s nothing to worry about.” I love the way he says “happy” and I think he puts his hands on her shoulders when he says that...of course I can’t be sure b/c they rarely PAN OUT! I want to see where their hands are! C’mon! Lois looks at him and tentatively says, “Except maybe if he finds out you’re a superhero.” She shrugs her shoulders, “My dad hates superheroes.” Lois laughs nervously then goes to check on her dad, while Clark takes a moment to process this bit of information.

The General is flipping through one of Clark’s scrapbooks (thank God he didn’t find the Lana one!) and drinking a cup of coffee when Lois walks into the living room/kitchen. He compliments the coffee and Lois kisses him on the cheek and tells him to make himself at home. The General tells her that Lucy’s upstairs unpacking and she could be all day...um how long did they expect to stay? I mean it seems to me like it was an unexpected visit, which is kind of rude in the first place, but then they just plant themselves there and they plan on being there for awhile? They again this is Lucy. She has a habit of just assuming that she can crash at whichever place Lois is staying.

Clark walks into the room and tells the General that it’s good to see him. The General just glances over at him and grunts before he goes back to perusing Clark’s scrapbook, while Clark stands there awkwardly with his arms hanging at his sides. Lois lets out a small noise and tugs on her ear in the background, like she’s telling Clark to make more of an effort. Clark turns his head in her direction before the General says, “So, nothing much has changed around here. Does your mother still own the place?” Clark admits that it’s in her name and he’s about to say something else, but the General cuts him off, “I see. You live in your mother’s house and you work in a basement, is that correct?” Nope, no judgement there. Not at all. Clark tells him that it is the bullpen of the DP and he works side by side with Lois, hoping that that will make a difference and turn things in his favour.

Sadly no such luck. “Ah. She seems to write more articles than you. What exactly do you do with your time, Clark?”

Lois, who was busying herself in the background and getting stuff from the pantry, takes this moment to intervene when she sees that Clark’s struggling for an answer. “Hey, Daddy, Clark and I work together a lot. He just gives me the byline sometimes. That’s just how sweet he is.” Clark smiles but the General doesn’t look very impressed. He tells the General that they look out for each other. They certainly do!

“Good,” the General says. He pulls a list out of his pocket, “Because if Lois is going to be spending any time around here, there are a few things that need to be brought up to code.”

Clark takes the list from him and jokes, “Like scrubbing the bathroom tile with a toothbrush?” Lois has a look on her face, like “Oh God, help me. And now the real testing starts.”

The General tells him that’s number 17 on the list and Clark actually takes a good look at the list and sees that he has a whole shiz load of stuff for Clark to do. There are 19 items on that long ass list. Clark realizes that the General’s not kidding and the General gruffly says, “No, I never do.” *Snort* I’d believe that.

The General then turns the conversation to Martha. She’s his major opposition in the Senate and he feels uncomfortable inspecting the enemy’s camp. Lois asks him if he’s finally running for office, but he tells her that’s not the case. He’s the senior military advisor on a new bill: The Vigilante Registration Act. Clark wants clarification, so the General says, “Vigilantes, weekend warriors in masks who run around inciting anarchy.” Clark doesn’t think that they incite anarchy and Lois gives him a look like, “Clark! Be cool! Don’t irritate my dad!” In spite of Lois’ warning look, Clark proceeds with his defence of vigilantes and says that they stop crimes and protect people. The General adds, “And they commit acts of terrorism.” Clark looks confused. The General brings up the RAO tower and how it was blown up by supernatural causes, so one of the vigilantes must have been responsible for burning it to the ground. I’m glad that they’re actually addressing that, because it struck me as a little odd that Clark used his laser vision on the towers and aside from Zod, Tess, and Ollie mentioning it, there weren’t really any repercussions that came with that. It makes sense to me that the military and people like the General would see that as an act of terrorism and IMO it’s a valid reason for them to mistrust vigilantes, because of course they couldn’t possibly understand why Clark did what he did without Clark revealing his identity to them and even if he did it would sound crazy, since Clark doesn’t have a lot of evidence to back him up.

Lois frantically tries to halt this conversation before it goes any further and suggests they take a furlough from work. The General looks at her, but he doesn’t let up and asks Clark if he knows who the real heroes of the world are. Naturally, he uses the army as his example, since they have to enlist, go through training and be held accountable for their actions. In a way I can see his point. The only person Clark really has to answer to is himself. The General thinks that if people listen to vigilantes, they’ll start to form cells (nice continuation of the terrorism terminology) and take the law into their own hands. “No, I will not let them compromise our national security.” He shakes his head definitively.

Clark tries to bring Lois into the conversation and asks her what she thinks. I love his eyebrow raise here and how he silently tells her to back him up. However, Lois will not discuss this topic with her father and abruptly changes the topic to groceries. She hands Clark a list then asks him if he wants baked or mashed potatoes. Clark is less than thrilled. “Whatever the General would like of course,” he says in a disgruntled tone before he leaves. Lois isn’t exactly happy with the situation either. The poor girl feels like she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I think this scene gives us some interesting insight into Lois and her relationship with her family. I find it very interesting that whenever Lois talks about her dad to other people, she refers to him as the General. She always says, “The General always said....” or “Whenever the General...”. She NEVER refers to him as ‘my dad’, but with the General, she always calls him “Daddy” and that’s something that usually a young girl calls her father. She puts on this act of the sweet, doting, domestic daughter, because she still yearns for her dad’s approval and she thinks that that’s what he wants. It’s very clear from how often Lois talks about her dad that she looks up to him and respects him, so it’s very difficult for Lois to be herself around him, because she thinks that he won’t accept the real Lois. This probably explains why Lois goes through the effort of making dinner in this episode, when she usually can’t cook to save her life. Likewise, this “sweet, doting, domestic” persona is nothing like the Lois, Clark is used to, so no wonder he’s taken aback when Lois doesn’t speak her mind in front of her dad, but I’ll get more into that later. With regards to the General, once again I have to applaud the casting people for casting Michael Ironside for the role of the General. His deep gravelly voice and the way he carries himself gives him the aura of authority that he needs for the role and he definitely brings a certain gravitas to the part, but more gushing about him later.

Moving on, Lois is still busy making dinner and the General is watching a football game when the game is interrupted by a broadcast telling them about a fire in a refinery in SV. “Clark should see this,” the General utters. “Remind him of what a real hero is.” Wow, General could your voice drip with any more disdain? You know I’d love to call him something other than General or the General, to save on the word count/typing time, but it seems kind of wrong to call him Sam. Anyways, Clark walks into the kitchen at this moment with two bags full of groceries in his hands. He tells Lois that they were out of cranberries and Lois quickly finds a way to alert him to the fire. “The store must have had a fire sale, huh, Clark?” Heh that reminds me of this episode of Arrested Development when Tobias went on an audition and he rolled around and yelled, “It’s a fire sale!” Clark looks at her, like “WTH are you talking about,” but she moves her eyes in the direction of the TV and he takes the hint. The General notices their exchange and glances back at the TV. He turns around and Clark swooshes off, leaving Lois holding both grocery bags in her hands. When he turns to face Lois, he asks her, “Where’s Clark?” She says he went upstairs and the General is not happy that he left her holding the bags. Uh oh, one more strike against Clark. Now the General thinks that Clark’s not a gentleman. Oh General, if you only knew. Clark wants to be a gentleman with Lois, but she usually doesn’t let him...like in Disciple when she held up the umbrella over the two of them...although now that they’ve been dating for awhile she lets him do more and more stuff for her. For example, Lois never would have let Clark drive her car before they started dating....but I digress.

Lois weakly smiles at her dad, then they hear an announcement on the TV that the fire’s been put out thanks to the Blur. They see the \S/ emblazed onto the refinery and again the General doesn’t think much of this. He just sees it as a publicity stunt for the Blur...kind of like how Godfrey thought that Kara saved his life as part of a publicity stunt in Supergirl.

Clark comes back into the kitchen and breathlessly says, “I found the cranberries. They were in the truck.”

Lois takes in his appearance and wipes a smudge off his cheek while she asks, “Where were they honey? Under the hood?” I love how his eyes light up when she calls him that and the little questioning look he gives her when she wipes the smudge off his cheek.

The General knows that something’s off. Lois told him that Clark was upstairs. He smiles at them like he knows he has them. Lois flounders for a plausible explanation. “Yeah, he was upstairs...outside.”

Clark quickly supplies, “Checking the chimney,” and Lois turns to him and thanks him. Good hustle guys, but you need to work on your excuses. I’ll let it slide though since this is the first time they’ve come up with an excuse for Clark’s super activities together. Clark gets a call from Ollie and excuses himself. He tells Ollie that he’ll be right there and calls out to Lois that he has to go chop some wood as a way to excuse himself/work on the General’s list. The General watches Clark through the window and asks someone on the phone to find him info on Clark. Ruh roh.

Later in the loft, after Clark gets rid of Ollie, Lucy comes upstairs and asks Clark if someone was with him. She hands him a glass of lemonade, then asks him if the General gave him a list. She knows the drill by now. Clark admits that he did. Lucy tells him, “He likes to test Lois’ boyfriends. He’s convinced they all have something to hide.” Lucy fingers Clark’s yearbook as she says this and Clark looks like he’s about to have a heart attack, because she’s so freaking close to Swann’s journal. “So far no one’s passed.”

Clark confidently says, “I’ll be the first.” And the only one, Clark!

Lucy takes off her apron then proceeds to blatantly hit on Clark. She gets in his space and says, “You’ve grown into quite a man in the past six years, Clark.”

Clark just smiles at her and changes the subject, “I’m sure Lois could use your help.” I love the way that he handles Lucy here. He can tell that she’s hitting on him, but he’s respectful of the fact that she’s Lois’ sister, so instead of openly calling her on what she’s doing, he subtly reminds her that Lois is the woman he loves by mentioning her and he tries to get her out of there by saying that Lois could use her help...which, given Lois’ history in the kitchen, is probably true. Well played, Clark! I approve.

Lucy is still being flirty and is all, “I think I earned a ten minute break”. However, Clark’s not going for that. He motions for her to go in front of him...I wonder if he’s worried that if he goes in front of her, she’d jump him. They head down the stairs and Lucy asks him to at least show her around the barn. Lucy, you saw it 6 years ago. And even though you’d think there would be changes to it, given how many times it’s been destroyed, it’s pretty much stayed the same. Clark looks over his shoulder and says that there’s really not much to see and Lucy takes the opportunity to grab his face and plant one on him...at the exact moment Lois walks into the loft. Wow, Lucy, you suck as a sister. Actually you kind of suck as a human being in general right now. She had absolutely no reason to do that and that really doesn’t fit with her excited reaction when Lois told her that they were getting engaged in Persuasion.

“Really?” Lois says in disbelief. Poor Clark looks like he has no idea what to do. He tries to explain, “Lois, your sister just-“ “Ambushed you,” she finishes. Clark nods affirmatively.

“Well this has Lucy written all over it. In backstabbing bitchberry lipgloss.” LOL. I love you, Lois. “You,” she gestures to Lucy, “come with me.” I’m so glad that they Lois didn’t freak out on Clark here, like she did in Escape, although I did understand her initial reaction there, but here it really wouldn’t make sense for Lois to think the worst of Clark especially after they’ve said their ILYs, he’s told her his secret, and they’ve been engaging in mind blowing sex. Clark’s a satisfied man. He’d have no reason to stray. But yeah, I’m happy that they didn’t use this to create some kind of [I]Gossip Girl[I] like over-hyped angst and contrived drama and that they used issues that made much more sense and were much more organic to create drama in this episode. More on that later.

Lois drags Lucy back to the farmhouse. “Ow, Lois, not so tight,” she complains. Lucy, you have absolutely nothing to complain about. You’re just lucky that you’re Lois’ sister and she didn’t go all kung fu fighter on your ass.

“So, so what?” Lois asks Lucy. “You thought I would catch you two tongue wrestling and what? Have a big fight with Clark?” Lucy starts to speak, but Lois tells her to save it. “The only reason that I am keeping you around is for Dad.” This is another example of Lois’ trying to please her dad. “So go make yourself useful and get us some ice.” Lucy snidely says that there’s ice in the freezer, but Lois won’t take no for an answer and tells her that their dad likes crushed. I think that this was just Lois’ way of putting some space between herself and Lucy, so she’d have some time to cool down and wouldn’t do something she’d regret....although I don’t think she’d regret punching her at the very least...that wouldn’t hurt Lucy too badly. Oh and I know I’ve said this before, but wow, they sure got it right when the cast Peyton List as Lucy, because they really do look alike, especially now that ED has her naturally dark hair.

As Lucy walks away, Lois hears a smashing sound coming from the barn. We see Clark chopping wood with his bare hands and he is PISSED. Wow is he ever upset. As he chops the wood he says, “ ‘Chop and stack one quart of wood.’ Sir, yes, sir.” Poor Clark. The guy has been demeaned by the General and assaulted by Lucy in the course of one day.

Lois sees Clark using his powers to cut the wood and cautions him, “Careful Dad doesn’t see you with the kung fu there, Paul Bunyon.” Heh that reminds me of Lois calling Clark a brawny lumberjack in Plastique.

Clark apologizes for what happened with Lucy and Lois assures him that is wasn’t his fault. I like the way his hands go out to his sides when Lois acknowledges this. It seems to me like Clark is glad that Lois is finally taking his side on something. I wonder if he was worried that Lois would take Lucy’s side on the kiss, since she didn’t stand up to the General before and he remembers her reaction when she saw him with Chloe in the shower in Escape. “Still,” Lois hesitantly says, “you can put out a burning building, but you can’t contain her hot lips.” I propose that we call Lucy, “Loose Lips Lucy” from now. Lois makes a fair point, but in this instance Clark really is innocent and he couldn’t have done anything to stop her...unlike in Warrior when he just stood there like an absolute moron while Z was blatantly hitting on him. He could have easily gotten away from Z before she weaved her seduction spell, sat on his lap and started to make out with him. Yes, BQM, I am still bitter and I am still waiting for you to make it up to me!

Clark tells her that Lucy surprised him. “But you know what’s a bigger surprise is that you couldn’t stand up to your dad.” Lois looks at him in shock. She didn’t expect Clark to bring this up...or at least not today. “Unless you actually agree with this Vigilante Registration Act.”

Lois approaches him and begs him to understand. “Clark, I am just trying to get through this holiday without a fight.” She’s barely keeping it together.

Clark’s not backing down though, “Lois, you either agree with him or you don’t.”

“I don’t,” Lois says with conviction. Clark looks like he can’t believe what’s happening and Lois continues, “But this means something to the General so please do not make me choose sides.”

“I thought you were somebody who stood up for what she believed in. Now when it comes to your father, you do the same thing that he does. You make your choices based on fear.” This fight reminds me of their fight in Charade, except it seems to be flipped in a way since back then, Lois was the one who was more upset with Clark and she didn’t really get where he was coming from and she saw something that she didn’t like in Clark. Now, however, Clark’s the one who’s more upset with Lois and he doesn’t see where she’s coming from and he’s seeing something in her that he doesn’t really like. Given the way Lois took on Sacks last season and Godfrey this season, I can understand why Clark is stunned by Lois’ passivity when it comes to the General.

“Hey, just because you don’t have a-“ Lois abruptly cuts herself off from finishing her sentence but the damage is done.

Clark knows what she was going to say and he says it for her, “A what, Lois? What were you going to say? A father?” He raises his eyebrows at her and silently challenges her to continue.

Lois looks at him with regret in her eyes and tries to clarify what she meant, “Okay, what I am trying to say is that you haven’t had to deal with a family for a really long time. All you have to answer to is yourself. Clark, if you want to be with me, you’re going to have to deal with my family too. I hope you can respect that.” She walks away and wipes a tear from her eye, while Clark sadly watches her go. As we saw in Charade, they hate fighting with each other, and I can imagine it would suck even more now after the past few weeks of bliss.

This is a really powerful scene IMO and what I love about it is that as much as I hate seeing them at odds, a part of me also really loves seeing them fight, because they fight fair. They both challenge each other and call each other out on their crap. Also, they’d never deliberately hurt each other, like here, Lois starts to say “father”, but she immediately stops herself before she can finish her sentence, because she knows that that’s hitting below the belt and how much that would hurt Clark. I’m guessing this was a case of Lois not thinking before she said it and you can tell that as soon as she says it, she wishes that she could take it back. Now with Clark, I love it that he’s allowed to fight with Lois, because, as I’ve mentioned before, in a lot of his other relationships, usually he just has to stand there and take it. I’m glad that Clark stood up for himself and let Lois know how disappointed her was with her and how OOC he thought she was being. I love it that we can see things from both of their POVs and we can see why Clark’s so frustrated, but also why Lois is acting the way she is wrt to her Dad. Her dad’s her hero, at least he was before Clark, and she doesn’t get to see him very often, so of course she’d want things to go well and wouldn’t want to rock the boat by getting into a fight with the General over politics.

Back to the ep, at the gas station, Lucy picks up a bag of ice when Flagg addresses her. He’s in a military uniform and masquerading as Col. Richard Stafford. He apologizes for startling her and says that he’s posted nearby at Fort Ryan. Hey continuity to Combat! He wants Lucy to help him and tells her that her dad’s crucial to congress passing the new bill about vigilantes. He lies to her that the General is in danger around Clark b/c of his affiliation with vigilantes. Lucy wants proof and he gives her an envelope with photos to give to her dad and tell him that she found them on the farm. Lucy asks him why he doesn’t just give the envelope to the General himself and Flagg says it’s best to not arouse Clark’s suspicious and that it’s best for her dad’s protection if he doesn’t know that she got the envelope from him. Lucy eyes him warily, but decides to trust him and takes the envelope from him. Flagg shows Lucy a homing device and asks her to plant it on him so that they can track him and protect him. Um, what happened to the tracking device you were using at the beginning of the episode? He tells her, “The U.S. army is depending on you, Lucy, so is your father.” She takes the pen from him and says that he can count on her. “Go make your father proud,” he says. I don’t blame Lucy for falling for this, because this guy is a pretty convincing liar with the outfit and the ID and he also seems to have a knack for reading people, because he knew all the right words to say to make Lucy go along with his plan. Like Lois, Lucy’s always wanted her dad’s approval, so I can understand why she’d do this. Also, of course she’d want to save her dad’s life if she thinks his life is in jeopardy.

Back at the farm, Clark walks into the barn where the General has set up a chair and a lamp to interrogate him. He tells him that he’s finished all the items on his list and has a look of confusion on his face. He’s probably wondering where the General is and why the chair’s there. The General comes out of the shadows and we see that he’s in his fatigues. He takes the list from Clark and tells him to sit down. As soon as he does, the General turns the blinding light on in Clark’s face. The General compares Clark to Lois’ other bfs who were men of action, men who make the news, and he doesn’t get what Lois sees in Clark, since he thinks that Clark just reports the news...oh General if only you knew. Clark suggests that the General asks Lois what why she’s interested in him. The General tells him that he had someone at the Pentagon check him out and he came out way too clean, so he thinks that Martha’s covering for him. Clark can’t sit down and just let him insult his mom, so he gets up and asks him what gives him the right to spy on them.

“Well, I’m a four star General and a war hero, Clark. Now nobody could have done this list by themselves.”

“You’re searching for enemies, where they don’t exist. Just like your vigilante witch hunt.”

“I was talking about you, Clark. Why would you bring up vigilantes?” The General smiles b/c he thinks he’s trapped Clark. He hands him the envelope Lucy got from Flagg and tells him, “Lucy found this in your loft.” Clark opens it and finds two pictures of him and Kara in her costume. Wait, the General is supposed to be a smart guy...so wouldn’t he find it odd that Clark would keep two pictures in his loft that are clearly from surveillance footage? I mean it’s not like it’s a picture where they’re both posing for the camera. I dunno that doesn’t make sense to me. He should have realized it was a set up. “You’re in league with them aren’t you?”

“I’m not on trial, Sam.” Wow that’s the first time Clark’s called the General by his first name. “You want to protect the United States, but as soon as you’re threatened everyone else’s rights go out the window? It’s no wonder Lois is too afraid to be herself around you!” Bold, Clark, but so true. Someone needs to tell the General the truth.

“Are you questioning my relationship with my daughter?” You barely have a relationship with your daughter, General.

“You have been questioning me all day!”

“It’s my RIGHT to protect my family!’ The General yells at Clark.

“It may be your right!” Clark concedes, “But you’re wrong to think that we don’t belong together. I love your daughter and I don’t want a day to go by where I’m not with her.” You tell him, Clark! I love how passionately Clark fights for his relationship with Lois and how he stands up to her Dad, because he can’t bear to think of his life without her. Also TW’s delivery of that line and how his voice kind of breaks when he says the last part is amazing. You could tell that the mere thought of being without Lois terrified him.

Unfortunately for Clark, the General appears to be unmoved by Clark’s declaration. “Well I hope you enjoyed today, because it’s the last day you’ll ever spend with her.” That’s kind of presumptuous don’t you think, General? Also how could he enjoy his day with you on his case all the time?

In the kitchen, Lois is still busy getting the Thanksgiving meal ready all by herself...and it actually looks edible! Like wow that turkey looks great! The poor girl looks completely frazzled though and her hair isn’t in a tidy ponytail anymore...well it’s still in a ponytail, it just looks pretty messy. Clark walks in the kitchen and Lois says, “I did everything I could to make today work. I dealt with my family. I helped the Blur. I even found my inner Iron Chef. And all I asked, the only thing you had to do was deal with my dad for one day.” Lois has clearly had about as much stress as she can handle at this point, but Clark has to tell her what’s going on with her dad.

“Lois, your dad had me investigated by the Pentagon. He has surveillance photos of me with Kara. She’s in her costume. I think your sister planted them in the loft.”

Before Lois has time to digest this information, Lucy and the General walk down the back stairs with their bags in hand. Lucy tells Lois that she thinks it would be a good idea if they went to her place without Clark. Lucy STFU you back stabbing beyotch (I still love Peyton List though)! Lois gives her an incredulous look. Lucy turns to her dad, kisses him on the cheek, plants the tracking device in his pocket and tells him that she’ll meet him in the car. The General tells Lois that it’s time to go and Lois looks so lost. She sidles closer to Clark, but the General persists, “That’s an order young lady.” I think the General still sees Lois as his little girl. I don’t think he fully realizes that she’s an adult and that she’s fully independent and can make her own decisions until Lois stands up to him later. She pleads with the General to stay and work things out but he stubbornly refuses. “There’s nothing to work out. Your friend Clark is a dishonest man.” Lois turns around to look at Clark and the General continues as steps closer to Clark, “And he has dangerous friends. When the vigilantes try to take over this country with anarchy, he’s going to go down with them.” I find the use of the word “friend” here to very deliberate, b/c clearly he knows that Clark is way more than just a friend to Lois. It’s like he’s already decided in his head that their relationship is over, so he’s dropped Clark from the status of Lois’ boyfriend to just her friend as a way to distance the two of them. Once again he tells her to go. Clark just looks at Lois and gives her a small encouraging smile that says, “It’s okay. You can stand up to your dad now. I’ll always be here for you,” but alas, Lois decides to go with her dad here. She tearfully apologizes to Clark as she goes, while the General gives Clark a smug look. Poor Clark here looks so sad. When I first saw this, I was pretty upset that Lois didn’t stand up to her father in this scene, but when I saw the rest of the ep I understood why she went with her dad.

As we see in the next scene, Lois went with her family so that she could try and work things out and smooth things over between Clark and her dad. She probably thought that if she’d stayed with Clark, that would have only made things worse and would have created a rift between herself and her family that would be pretty difficult to fix. The Lanes enter Lois’ apartment and we see Lois pleading Clark’s case. It looks to me like she was doing that during the ride to the Talon as well. “Please, Dad, go back and talk to him. It’s Clark. You know him!”

The General sets down his things and tells her that he can’t do that, but Lois wants to know why. “Because he’s in league with masked vigilantes. When he finally pays the price for this, I do not want you to get hurt.” As he talks, he empties his pockets and places the tracking device on Lois’ kitchen counter.

“Not all of your vigilantes are bad!” Lois insists. “Why do you have to go to defcon 1? You haven’t met a single one of them!”

Lucy chooses this moment to butt in, “Lois, can you stop trying to run damage control long enough to see that we are just trying to protect you?” *Snort* Um, Lucy, how does you kissing Clark protect Lois? Unless you’re testing Clark’s fidelity, but even so that’s a pretty rotten thing to do to your sister.

“Back off, Lucy,” Lois orders. “Or do you happen to have some compromising photos of me that you’d like to share with the class?”

The General tells them to cool it and that Lois should trust him. “Clark’s not who you think he is. A couple calls to the NSA and we’ll find out all we need to know about him.”

Lois takes a step towards the General and defiantly says, “It doesn’t matter, because I love Clark.” The General raises his head and looks at her in surprise. “Everything you need to know about him is standing right in front of you. Talk to me! The only thing that matters is how I feel!” The General tries to interject, but Lois keeps talking to him with tears in her eyes. “I appreciate that you like straight talk, so I will give it to you in one razor sharp line. I am staying with Clark and if you love me, you will respect that.” A tear slides down her cheek when she says that. I respect Lois so much for finally standing up to her dad, because it clearly took a lot out of her. The General is the man she’s looked up to all her life and she’s always wanted to get his love and approval, but in this scene Lois makes a really hard decision. She draws a line in the sand between Clark and her family and lets both Lucy and her dad know that when push comes to shove, if they make her choose between them and Clark, she’d choose him. She loves him and nothing and no one is going to come between them.

The General is finally stunned into silence. It’s clear that this is a first and he doesn’t know to react or what to say to Lois. Lucy looks pretty shocked herself and seems to realize for the first time that Lois isn’t kidding around with regards to her relationship with Clark. She breaks the awkward silence first and tells the General, “Daddy, let’s go.” They pick up their things and exit the apartment, leaving Lois all alone in the Talon with that tracking device.

Flagg activates the rocket that goes with the tracking device while he kind of blasphemes the national anthem, although it was very cleverly done. In the meantime, Clark, Tess, and Ollie are trying to figure out who the target is and they realize in the nick of time that Flagg is after the General. Flagg fires the rocket and Clark manages to speed back to the Talon just in time to save Lois before the whole place goes up in flames. This is a very cool shot btw. From outside the Talon, Lucy and the General watch in horror as the place explodes with Lois inside. I like how the General turns when he hears the rocket before Lucy, since I’d imagine that as a General he’d be familiar with that sound. The General calls out Lois name and he looks devastated, then Lois appears in front of them and he’s beyond relieved to see that she’s alive. They have a family group hug and when they break apart the General notices the \S/ symbol on the building behind the Talon. He realizes that that Blur saved Lois’ life and Lois smiles and nods with teary eyes. Does the General read the Planet? B/c it’s not like this is rare. Then again reading it and seeing it for yourself are two completely different things. Oh and HUZZAH the Talon is GONE! Although I do mourn the death of the costume closet.

Back at the farmhouse after Clark and Ollie confront Flagg, we see Lois setting the table for dinner. Lucy walks down the stairs with her bag in her hands and cautiously approaches Lois. “Lo, can we talk?”

“That depends. Can you form a sentence without lying to my face?” Lois continues to get the table ready for dinner.

Lucy sets her bag down on the floor and says, “I can’t believe that I almost got you killed.” You can tell that she really does regret her actions here. She may fight with her sister and disagree with her a lot, but deep down she still loves her and would never want to see her get hurt.

“Let’s not forget the Talon’s shock and awful missile makeover. Who would have known that fire insurance didn’t cover mortar fire?”

“I’ll replace everything you lost, Lois, I promise,” Lucy says earnestly. Um Luce, how are you going to do that? Also what about the costumes? Can you replace those too?

Lois isn’t buying it, “Just like you’re going to make Clark and I trust you again?” She walks into the kitchen. Lucy sadly looks down and picks up her bag to leave, but Lois stops her. She doesn’t want her sister to leave like this. “Look, Lucy. I’m not happy that you went behind our backs, again (nice continuity to Lucy!), but...I do get trying to protect Dad.” She pauses for a second before she continues, “Our larger than life hero needing someone to protect him? Who wouldn’t want to do that?” Sounds just like what you do for Clark, Lo.

Lucy sets her bag down again and admits, “I should have told you what was going on.” Lois agrees. “But I thought that if I helped dad on my own, he’d stop seeing me as-“

“The troublemaker,” Lois supplies. “Okay, I know I came down on you pretty hard, Lu (Nooo go back to Luce, it sounds so much better!), but I think that part of me sort of like the fact that you turned into the troublemaker, because I was finally able to be the good one.”

Lucy contemplates this for a second, “When you say it all out loud it’s just...well it sounds really exhausting.” Both Lois and Lucy kind of laugh at this.

Lois nods, “Yeah, I think we were so busy trying to be the perfect daughter that....we forgot how to be sisters.’’

Lucy disagrees, ‘’No, Lois. You’re a great sister.’’ Thank you, Lucy! Yes, she is a great sister and I’m so glad you acknowledged that. Lucy’s heartfelt compliment touches Lois deeply and the two sisters embrace. This is a great scene between the two of them...it’s probably their best scene IMO, because it explores their childhood, their relationship, and allows them to engage in a genuine conversation that leads to a deeper understanding of each other. I loved Lois line about liking that Lucy was the troublemaker because it allowed her to be the good one. We know that Lois got into quite a bit of trouble growing up and I think she probably did that as a way to get the General to notice her. When Lucy started acting out, their roles flipped and Lois got to be the good daughter and find ways for him to notice her without having to act out. I really, really hope that their relationship improves from this point on.

While Lois and Lucy are having their heart to heart, the General approaches Clark, who’s tinkering away at something in the barn for a little heart to heart of their own. ‘’Clark,’’ the General says with his hands behind his back, ‘’I owe you an apology. I’m not so set in my ways that I can’t appreciate the way you stood up to me earlier. And you were right. I have not always been a perfect father.’’ Clark tries to stop him but the General admits that he needed to hear that he wasn’t the perfect father. I like how the General actually admits this to Clark, because I’m sure that must have been hard for him to a)apologize in the first place and b) admit that he wasn’t always the greatest father. It must also be nice for Clark to hear that his defense of his relationship with Lois earlier didn’t fall on deaf ears. ‘’Nobody’s had the guts to talk to me like that since my wife passed away.’’ Aww the poor guy’s so lonely .

Clark looks at him thoughtfully, “You must really miss her.’’

“Everyday, but thankfully I get to see my Ella in our daughter’s faces.’’ He regards Clark and asks him, “Can I give you some advice, Clark?’’ Clark says yes so the General proceeds, “Going to war, having to deal with the rush of battle and the struggle to save lives, it made coming home, doing the simple things difficult. You know it’s funny, it’s the simple things like taking a walk or dancing with your wife or tucking in the kids that make us human. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved serving our country. I even got to be a hero a couple times, but if I had to do it over again I’d spend more time with family.’’ I find it interesting that the General mentioned ‘’dancing with your wife’’ as an example of the simple things that make people human, since that’s exactly what we saw Clark doing with Lois in Homecoming. His time with Brainiac made him realize that he had to stop living in the past and worrying about the future and just focus on the present, and the desire to embrace the moment played a huge role in Lois and Clark’s dance in the barn. He just wanted to focus on her and enjoy that moment with her. Also Michael Ironside does a great job with this scene. Even though he’s only portrayed this character twice, he really makes you believe in the character and his history and how much he loves his family.

Clark tells him that his girls love him and that he’s their hero, but the General thinks that Lois has found herself a brand new hero. Hee! Yes she has! “I almost lost her tonight, but by the grace of God we’re all going to have ourselves a homecooked Thanksgiving meal.” Clark smiles and nods, then the General gives him a knowing look and says, “That’s all thanks to the Blur.”

Clark takes the opportunity to ask him, “So Lois being saved by a vigilante, that would change your mind on the bill?”

“Well, I gotta admit, I kind of like her having her own private guardian angel.” Wow did the General actually smile? That’s gotta be a first! “But...not every hero has the Blur’s code of honour.”

‘’And not all politicians have yours,” Clark says. “Some will use the law to destroy people.”

“I’m a military man, Clark. I have to believe that when push comes to shove that America will do the right thing. Kind of like Lois did the right thing by you tonight. For years I’ve been giving her boyfriends an impossible list of chores to do, not to test them.” Clark realizes that he was testing Lois. The General smiles and nods, “Those poor bastards I put them through hell. Lois never said a thing. That’s how I knew she didn’t love them.” Wow, I’m so glad that the General told Clark all of this, because it must have meant so much to him to hear it from the man who was giving him such a hard time earlier that Lois, who he knew had problems standing up to her dad, finally did stand up to him and that she loves him so much more than she’s loved any of her previous boyfriends.

The General starts to walk away and Clark gets a very pleased look on his face. “About Lois and I ( that should be ‘Lois and me’),” the General stops in his tracks. “There’s a question I was hoping to ask you.” OMG, OMG, OMG!!!! HE’S GOING TO PROPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Flails arms and runs around in circles*

Finally, we get a nice family scene with Clark, Lois and her family and they’re all enjoying a nice Thanksgiving dinner together. Frankly, this group of people makes so much more sense to me than having Chloe and Lionel sit at the same table for Thanksgiving in Rage. While it would have been nice to get a Clois reconciliation scene, I was okay that we didn’t get one in this episode because the conversations between Lois and Lucy, and Clark and the General had to take precedence over a conversation between Lois and Clark to tie up loose ends between them. Also it’s pretty clear that Lois and Clark are okay given the way they smile at each other in this scene and I love Lois’ little questioning look, like she’s asking Clark why he’s so happy and his little, ‘I know something you don’t know’ smile.

The ep ends with the passing of the bill and Flagg orders his Nightcrawler wannabe to blow up an anti-vigilante building covered in anti-Blur signs.

As I said before, I LOVED this episode. Michael Ironside and Peyton List were just fantastic and they brought a really believable family dynamic and had great chemistry with ED, in spite of the fact that the last time they interacted with her was almost 7 years ago and the three of them had never shared a scene before. Erica really brought her A Game in this episode, particularly in the scene when Lois confronts her dad and chooses to stay with Clark. Clark was also amazing in this episode and I loved how he expressed his frustration with Lois and her family in this episode and he got to learn more about Lois by interacting with her family. Ollie and Tess are fun to watch together and I love their banter. So yeah this ep was made of win for me. Next up (review wise): TERI HATCHER!!!!!
