Smallville 3x17 "Legacy" Episode Discussion

3x17 - "Legacy"
When Jonathan begins to act strangely, Clark believes Jor-El is sending Jonathan messages through the key and is the cause for his father’s withdrawal from the family. Clark goes down to the caves to confront his biological father but Lionel catches him there and begins putting the pieces together – leading him straight to Dr. Swann. As the two billionaires face off, a deal is struck and Lionel’s true motives are revealed.

Ok. I was wondering if someone could fill me in, on what I need to know to watch tonites episode. Like, for instance, what part does Christopher Reeves play in Smallville, and what has happened to Lex this year. Ive been on and off, but I wanna start watching the final episodes of the season, Ive been sporadically watching this season.

CR plays Dr. Virgil Swann who first appeared in the episode "Rosetta" in Season 2.

Mini-bio courtesy of Chloe:
"He was a high-tech Howard Hughes 30 years ago. He graduated from M.I.T. when he was 19. He had his doctorate in math and applied physics. Then he started his own company, Swann Communications, which quickly rose to international acclaim in the 1970s as the world’s largest producer of satellites. I mean, this guy has so much hardware in space that “Scientific American” dubbed him the Man of Tomorrow. (...)He sold his company and put his millions toward charitable foundations. Rumor has it he devoted himself to searching for signs of intelligent life in the universe."

On the day of the meteor shower, one of Swann's satellites managed to intercept a message from Krypton which Swann decoded. The message said, "This is Kal-El of Krypton. Our infant son, our last hope. Please protect him and deliver him from evil."

Swann always wondered if "Kal-el" survived. The key to Clark's spaceship began calling to him and once affected his heat vision, causing him to burn a kryptonian symbol into his barn. Chloe did a story on the incident (thinking it was a college prank), which Swann saw. After finding out the owners of the barn had an adopted son, Swann figured he's found Kal-el. He contacted Clark and Clark went to meet him and talk about the message. It was only from Swann that Clarkl learned the name of his home planet and his Kryptonian name.

As for your second question...um. Wow. That might be a long one! Lots has happened to Lex this season.

To make it overly brief: Lex began to find out alot of info from Lionel's past...things that Lionel most definitely did not want him to know. Lionel then set him up so that he would appear crazy, but Clark and Chloe found out about the conspiracy. Lex mistakenly thought Morgan Edge (one of Lionel's associates) was responsible for the set up. Lex goes to confront Edge, and then Clark goes to save the day. In the ensuing fight, Clark is hit by a car. Lex sees him get hit and realizes that Clark isn't human. After ranting about aliens (making him seem even crazier), Lex is committed. Lionel orders him to be medicated in a way that will erase his short term memory. Lex stops taking his medicine though, so Lionel orders a shock therepy treatment that will erase Lex's memory (at the risk of leaving him brain damaged if it doesn't work. Despite Clark and Chloe's best efforts to stop it, Lex is given the therapy. He no longer remembers the dirt he had on his father, or that Clark is an alien. With Chloe's help, "sane again" Lex manages to find out about some of his father's secret research. He and Clark go to one of the research facilities, but find that all the employees have been killed. The FBI shows up, suspecting that Lex had something to do with the murders. Lex makes a deal with the feds: they drop the charges against him and he'll help them bring down Lionel.

That left out massive amounts of details, but that's the gist of it.

Grr. No Chloe. No me likey. Thus this eppy does not deserve whole sentences.

WTF was with that face Lana was making after Clark left the Talon??? She looked like she was about to kill someone. Sceeeery.

Props to KK on the Lex scene though. Trying to smile while the tears run down...well-done!

Bo said "duking it out." Heh.

That last cave scene was *good*. Lionel and Bo fighting? Immensely hot.

Jeez. I soooo did not miss the ending Clana scenes. Or the freaking pink.

...but wait. Lana moving on? Me likey. Alot. Good girl. It's about time that one of them realized how pointless their 'ship is.

Chloe-sode next week! That one might get complete sentences.

Candy- You pretty much covered everything for me, but I'll just comment with full sentences.

Rarrrg. The Force was not strong with the moron writer who put in all the foul Clana angst as opposed to Chloe doing anything.

That was a goooood scene. I was really happy that they had a definite breakup...again.

Okay, about the Talon scene, I didn't really care. I totally felt like it was Sad!Clark losing somebody he loved and trying not to let that happen with Lana, who he "loves". And the kiss didn't make me retch, so it's all good.

The kiss didn't make me retch either. That might have had something to do with the fact that I turned my TV off though.

I was totally feeling the Lexana. Especially at the end when Lana was talking about trusting Lex. She doesn't trust Clark not to hurt her and you can't have love without trust.

I got all hyped up about the Lex/Lana scene. They look so cute together! Hehe.

The episode was good. I thought Lionial was going to kill himself. I was like.. 'Yay!' and then when I found out that he doesn't kill himself i was like 'Boo!' I'm sorry I just can't stand how he treats Lex and other people.

WTF? What kind of kiss was that? LOL! I sooo didn't like that scene! It was boring, anyway.

Did they show previews for next week? I can't remembered if they did or not...

Good episode. I don't blame Lana for tiring of Clark's mixed signals that he keeps giving her. Who would not get sick of it.

I'm glad it was Lana who kicked Clark to the curb this week.

Loved the Lionel/Jonathan fight. But give it up, JK. It's Lionel Luthor! He'll kick your butt just by looking at you.

Lexana love! It is on. Loved their scenes tonight. Friendly for now, but with a bit more of an edge that says "hmm. These two have something special".

Uh, where was Pete? And Chloe? Unless they were off somewhere makin' out, there's no excuse for their absence.

It's amazing how much better this show is when the Kent/Luthor dynamic is focused on. I thought tonight's episode was great, not to mention intense.

I, too, missed Chloe. But it looks like a Chole-centric episode next week so that is good. And being an old fogey myself I kind of liked the "old man porn" But Lex is still the best. I like his scenes with Lana but definitely see an older brother/father thing going on, as Lana does not have that in her life. Chloe's dad could probably be that but they haven't gone in that direction.

Always like anything that involves solving the mystery that is Clark Kent/Jor-El. And it's fun to see someone go up against Lionel that can match him wit for wit.

But I'm sorry, the whole Lana needing to experience new things, while in general a good idea, was just too much like Joey Potter for me. Just made me want to gag.

Overall a pretty good episode.

I really liked last nights ep. It really gave me alot to ponder over. I think Lex is right, insanity runs in the family. Lionel is so desperate to find a cure that he is slowly but surely showing signs of insanity. I think this ep. is showing signs of Lionel's departure. I am glad to see that Lex finally has the guts to turn Lionel in.

I liked the story line with Jonathan. I wonder what he really promised Jor-el. The fact that he won't tell anyone makes me think it was a pretty big sacrifice. I can see how the whole situation tears Clark up inside knowing he caused all of it. And he did get any help in the romance department either in this ep. I have stopped trying to understand what goes on between Clark and Lana.

And of course the best part of the ep. was Christopher Reeves' appearance. A little bit bigger than last time. My one question is, what happens now that he has the key? I guess opens the door to another appearance next season?

Thank you soo much Candygirl. I'm probably going to download most of the season on Kazaa, because I feel I missed way too much. But, I did tape last nite's episode, I'll just hold onto it for the time being.

SMALLVILLE'S RATINGS PLUMMETS!

From MediaWeek.com:

Quote:
Wednesday telecast of The Big House (4.4/ 7), the WB's Smallville (4.4/ 7), and a repeat of UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise (2.0/ 3).
The last episode "Crisis", got a 5.1/7! I know that there has not been a new episode in 7 weeks but I did not expect it to drop that much, considering a very famous guest star was on -- Christopher Reeves!

This is the LOWEST ratings ever for Smallville since Resurrection which got a 4.8/7!

Seriously, Lana should be shot.
Well maybe not shot, that's a bit extreme. But geez, get with Clark already. It's annoying how much they beat around the bush. I used to love the idea of them together, but now that I despise Lana...well...Clark could do better. The only thing is, I can't see him with anyone else. But Lana has just annoyed me this season.
I'm not really surprised that the ratings are down. Something happened to the show...personally I'm not so thrilled about watching it anymore. The O.C. is far more appealing, but that's beside the point.
Smallville went downhill, and that sux. Any theories why?
