Lana did help Chloe with the paper as well. I dont know i think it was Chloe's constant jealousy over Lana that made it feel really inauthentic. They had those 2 nice things but you didn't really get the vibe that they were hanging out together all the time like good buddy's. They didn't go to party's together or anything. It wasn't until she was with Lex that I felt like they were really close

She asked Chloe for her help with her mother but they only stayed in each other's orbit because of their connection to Clark.

Chloe and Pete friendship is different because they had one outside of Clark.
Chloe and Lana really didn't... especially not in season 1. They grew closer together when they became roommates of course but as Nicole mentioned, Chloe's jealous made it difficult for it to come of authentic at times...

^ I believe they became that eventually but during the first season, no... I just don't feel they hang around in the same cliques or anything which is why an episode like, "Apocolyse" made so much sense when Chloe referred Lana to the cheerleader that she didn't really hang out with much.

I liked that I felt the friendship was real and it didn't seem to be about Clark. It was really because Chloe and Lana truly loved being friends. Lana felt isolated from everyone when she was with Lex but I loved that she needed Chloe to still be her friend and have her support.
