OK! Interview: Laura Vandervoort

The episode may be titled "Arctic," but Smallville's cliffhanging season finale tonight will be red-hot, just as the rest of the season was – thanks to Laura Vandervoort.

Better known as Supergirl, the Canadian-born star has set tongues wagging and proven that Kryptonians are hot aliens when she first stepped on screen in the CW hit last fall in her busty top and short shorts.

"I wasn't a huge fan of it!" Laura tells OK!, laughing at the skimpy gear. "I was already nervous about fitting with the cast right away so the shorts didn't make me feel comfortable! But it was apart of the role."

And boy was she a perfect fit (no pun intended).

With a second-degree black belt in hand, Laura, a self-proclaimed tomboy, was the perfect gal to be the balls-to-the-wall, tough chick that is Kara Zor-El, Clark's (Tom Welling) cousin. Diving right into the stunt work, the 23-year-old has performed so many on her own that her stunt double saw little to no action.

"When I first go the role, I started doing the training with the harnesses and other stunts and I ended up taking to it pretty quickly," she says. "I really enjoyed doing the stunts. I would say I ended up doing like 90 percent of my own stunts. I feel bad for my stunt girl! But I love they cant get me down sometimes."

Jumping right in on the first day helped pacify some of the nerves that arrested her about joining an already established show and cast. A veteran of Canadian TV and completely aware that Supergirl even existed in the Superverse ("I never knew there was a Supergirl, so I had to look her up and do research"), Laura won the coveted role a week after her screen test. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of Tom on the Vancouver set.

"They've been doing it for six season the cast was kind of tight because everyone was there from the beginning and my first scene was a five-page dialogue, I'm like, "Tom Welling! Oh my God! He's so tall!" she laughs. "I watched Kristin [Kreuk] and Allison [Mack] and I was pretending it wasn't a big deal to me but it was! I clung on to Erica [Durance] because she was the last newbie. It was good in the end towards the end I was relaxed and it was comfortable and fun going to work."

There will be less fun next season as Lex Luthor himself -- Michael Rosenbaum -- will depart the series after tonight and will be demoted to guest star.

"The second to last day he shot he was in a scene with me an he was funny as always dancing around with me and he had his video tape and recorded everyones comments to him and he bought sushi for the entire cast and crew," Laura says. "He may come back, but he is such a great actor he has a lot ahead of him."

And will Supergirl come back? Though it's widely reported that she will return -- perhaps even as a regular -- Laura is pleading the fifth on that one. Because the show's creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are leaving the series as well, the actress -- who spent the season logging air miles jbetween Vancouver and Toronto to shoot the Canadian series Instant Star -- says she doesn't know the plan or direction for the show or Kara.

"We hope that it's the old show of how it's always been with them," she says. "I hope it won't be a huge difference. I haven't talked to [the new producers], but you have to see the finale to understand where I am right now."

Ever the tease, Laura, who will spend the summer shooting The Reef, a sequel to Into the Blue, won't dish any scoop. But she cautions for, what else, lots of action and suspense.

"A lot dramatic things of happens in the finale," she says. "We're pulling out all of the stops. It was a big episode to shoot. I get to be a little bad-ass. And someone's going to disappear. That's all I'm going to say!"

Well they better not leave Kara in the bloody Phantom Zone!!

I liked Laura as Brainiac. She really had some of James's mannerism, and she was obviously different than Kara.

Awww! Michael is so sweet! I miss him already!

The show better bring Laura back...that's so wrong, if they don't!

Smallville Exclusive: Kara's Future Is Up, Up, Up in the Air

A new development tempers the good news about Allison Mack re-signing, which itself improved the mood after Michael Rosenbaum's Smallvile departure was confirmed: Laura Vandervoort's status as Kara is as up-in-the-air as, well, Supergirl in flight.

As fans noticed in the CW's upfronts announcement earlier this week, "They announced the cast... and I'm not a part of it," Vandervoort tells me, letting out a self-effacing laugh. "We were all surprised when they chose not to bring me back as a regular, but I'm sure I'll be back for one or two [episodes]!"

Looking at the bright side, she notes, "The show is about Clark Kent, and I was honored to be a part of it. I mean, my character became more than it was supposed to be. She ended up sticking around the entire season." Stories even surfaced a while ago suggesting that when Tom Welling hangs up his red jacket and blue tee, Kara might be spun off into her own series.

In the meantime, Vandervoort has a hot summer planned — literally. She's now in Hawaii filming Into the Blue 2, a follow-up to the guilty pleasure starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba. Chris Carmack (The O.C.) plays LV's partner in deep-sea diving and more. "We have a great cast, including also Marsha Thomason (Lost) and David Anders (Heroes)," she shares. "We're very lucky." Comparing Blue 2 to the eye candy-filled original, she says, "This is more of a suspense thriller. But yes, everyone is in bathing suits and stuff like that!"

Noooooooo.
I'm pissed!

How the bloody hell can they leave Clark without any family left on the show?!

Me too. I was hoping her story continued. I really don't have any reason to even follow what is happening on the show anymore. Plus, it's not true that Kara's story was told.

Isn't it a bit early to give up on S8 as far as Kara is concerned?

I'm staying optimistic that we'll have more than the "1 or 2" episodes.

Laura is the one who said it...so, I guess she needs the encouragement from you! She seems to be taking it alright, but I was really shocked that she hasn't even met the new producers of the show! Weird!

I was only going to follow how Laura was doing on the show. I won't be watching, but I'm sure that either way, Laura will be having a great acting career.

she might be really pissed or sad, but doesn't want to show it and instead is hiding behind her laughter. i know i'd be pissed if i was told last-minute that i was getting booted.

it might have to do with the change of leadership. having her in season 8 might've been AlandMiles' plan, but when they left and the other writers took over leadership, they had a different plan in mind.

Well, I saw a petition that people can sign on one of her fan sites, you can sign if you want:

here.

I still think that if you are writing a character, which they were, you should at least get to meet them once!

I hope that Laura is on next season. Love her as Kara/Supergirl. I was on a message board recently and someone posted a rumor that they were thinking of doing a Supergirl series starring Laura of course.

I know that rumors should be treated with a grain of salt, but if it does happen, I will certainly watch it.

I did wonder why Brainiac did not to do Kara what he did to Lana and Chloe. Maybe he can't do it to a Kryptonion.

Wow! Thanks for the pic!

Great looking cast. ha! Actually, it looks to be an interesting movie. I don't care that it's not going to theaters, because movies are so expensive and I'd rather see it on DVD.

Was it James Marsters?
He has the idea for his own Supergirl, pardon me - Superwoman, series and he loves Laura and wants her in the lead.

As for not being optimistic, I don't see how I could be.
She's not in the write up for the next season, she gave an interview that she won't be back except for maybe few episodes. She still hasn't meet up with new show runners. It just doesn't look good. I was expecting her to be back for 13 or even more episodes. Anything less is disappointing.
They didn't even explore half of the storylines they could have with Kara and Clark.
