It wasn't clear in the books how prefects were chosen. I always see them as like the supervisors so a criteria for one is that they should have good grades. I think the Head of Houses chooses them and Dumbledore gets the final say on who they should be. Draco's a prefect as well (which is understandable to me compared to Ron).

They were never discussed in detail in the books:

Quote:
Prefects are allowed to take House points away from houses, but they are not allowed to take points from other prefects. Prefects can give detentions as a form of punishment.

Prefects patrol the corridors of the Hogwarts Express on the way to school and attend a meeting in a special prefects' carriage where they are instructed by the Head Boy and Girl. They also patrol hallways to ensure that other students are not breaking curfew. There is a bathroom with a large, pool-like bath on the fifth floor of Hogwarts Castle that is reserved for prefects and Quidditch captains. It is located at the fifth door to the left of the statue of Boris the Bewildered. The only known password to this bathroom is "pine fresh", which was used during the 1994–1995 school year.

Prefects have other responsibilities as student leaders. They show the first years the way to their dormitories on their first day of school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and supervise the decorating of the castle for Christmas (and presumably other events as well). They also watch the younger students when bad weather keeps them indoors over break times.

This article agreed with us that Ron shouldn't have been a Prefect: https://screenrant.com/harry-potter-...orst-prefects/

Ron being chosen as a Prefect is a common point of contention among fans of the series. It's still hard to understand why Dumbledore chose Ron to become Prefect. We know he didn't choose Harry because he felt Harry had enough on his plate. Hermione was an obvious Gryffindor choice, but why Ron? Was it simply because many of his brothers had been a Prefect before him?

Why not another Gryffindor boy in their years like Dean, Seamus, or Neville? Ron was never one to follow rules. He had no issue with letting people break them and he wouldn't even stand up to his own brothers when they stepped out of line. For the most part, he was a pushover and not necessarily a great role model. Plus, Dumbledore should have realized that Ron and Hermione would be embedded in everything Harry was, too.
This basically. I feel like he was only made Prefect because his brothers were Prefects.

Right? It's the same with our parents. They want us to be like them. Follow their path. I have to admit, my college course was heavily influenced by my parents because I had no idea what I really want back then.

At least it was your decision and not influenced by your parents. My course wasn't something I wanted but I went ahead and took the course because it's what they want because I can't seem to give them an answer as to what I really want back then.

And their lives are so much easier too (like in terms of technology). But also these times are much more dangerous than before.
