In a sad twist of fate, I think he was probably trying to be more powerful so that he could protect himself from James (hence coming up with sectum sempra and levi corpus) on his own and show himself as a great wizard to Lily (who was one of the best witches of her time, as said by many). Unfortunately, he hung around the wrong people and as such cases go, you can be and are judged by who you hang out with. I thinkhe was also trying to hide his family roots (Muggle dad).
Still can't get over the scene of him holding Lily's body, just rocking her and crying. I still cry when I see it. Has anybody else noticed that it sounds like he's sighing Lily's name with his final breath? I caught it last night. Interesting. How cool is it that of all the kids who got Lily's eyes, it is the one named Albus Severus ... Severus, who so loved Lily's eyes. I envision little Albie looking up at Prof. Snape's painting in the headmaster's office and introducing himself by his full name ... and Severus can once again stare into Lily's eyes  . Adorable.__________________

I re-watched DH2 yesterday and skipped to that part of the flashback - it still makes me sad and emotional everytime I see it.

Every time I rewatch the last movie I can't help but cry every single time I see snape holding lily and rocking back and forth :'(

I never knew that Snape has a thing for Lily. I find it amusing when I hear people say they called it as early as book 1. I mean how? If they were JKR, that's the only time I'd believe them. EVEN IF they called it.
