I've been in a Harry Potter mood on and off for the last little while because I've been bingeing a podcast called Owl Post where the hosts discuss every book in the Harry Potter series one single chapter at a time, and something that I realized as they were discussing Order of the Phoenix is that readers' first impression of the context of "Snape's Worst Memory" was intentionally misleading, and I'm not sure that later information about his character re-contextualized it to the degree that JKR was expecting.

That scene isn't about Snape being humiliated; it's about him calling Lily a Mudblood out of misdirected anger and never being able to either forgive himself or get her to forgive him for it.

I haven't read the book for long time, but plan to do that soon once I finish the book that I loan..
