This is the essence of Newt and basically why he probably appears anti-social and only care for his creatures. It would take a lot to let people into his life. Even the whole thing with Jacob took time. He wanted to wipe his memories away first but it's a good thing he wasn't able to do that. And in the end, he's got a special relationship with Tina after what they have been through.

Yeah! I guess his failed relationship with Leta made him enclosed and anti-social..However, his adventure in NY had changed him a lot as you mentioned He's got a solid relationship with Tina and Jacob. They've become friends and for Tina, his feelings moved a little forward. His trip to NY not only made him helping Thunderbird to return back to its home but also it greatly helped Newt changing himself by meeting new people who he can fully trust and love.

Guys, I can't remember if that was discussed here or on another thread but we're talking about Newt appearing in the Marauder's Map in POA, I've found this on Harry Potter wiki

I want to believe that the 2015 thing in Pottermore was a mistake since what Jo said about portraits at the Headmasters office precedes the timeline that they put up on Pottermore. But yeah, hopefully someone brings this up to her soon and she explains it. Do we know how Newt (or Tina) died? Old age?
