Also they've known Leta since their Hogwarts days so they're a close friend of hers. They still haven't explained how Newt got expelled from Hogwarts and what Leta has to do with that.

Although based on the flashbacks we got in part 2, I don't think Newt & Leta became a thing. They were just close friends.
